Main Page :: Useful N00b Links :: Possibilities as a Wurmian

Introduction
This topic covers some of the possibilities a new character can (and perhaps should) do on arrival in Wurm.

Many new players tend to immediatelly run out of Newtown straight into the
wilderness, just to realize after a while that without food, weapons/armor
this is not the best idea at all. Wurm is a big land (and no map exists,
except the one you build in your head), with many things that can cost a live and as a new character your skills are not very well suited to live in the wilderness on your own. It is possible, but definitively much harder as if you had the right equipment and/or friends.

Food
For the first 24hours of your life, you can get food in the tavern of
Newtown for free, but you really should make sure to establish some food supply for the time after. One possibily is fishing, combined with some foraging and pottery. In combination with a campfire you will at least be able to make yourself a (worse tasting) stew or casserole. More info at: How do i get Food/Cook guide.

People
Another important point: you are not alone in Wurm, there are other players, some as new as yourself, some experienced, some friendly and helpful, some trickery and thievish but lots are worth to get into contact with. (Jenn-Kellon Chat is a good place to make first contact).

Equipment
Even if you want to be the "lonely wolf", no need to do this without experience and/or equipment and Newtown is a good place to get both. You could, for example, learn how to create things on your own (for example: Pottery, Carpentry, Fishing, Skills), then sell your Items to Trader Dole (or other players/traders) to earn money and buy equipment/weapons/armour, or get a job at one of the many building-sites which often hire people to cut trees, mine, chisel (see the complete skills-list) in exchange for loan and/or equipment, learn to use weapons (using a practice doll or light animals, like Large Rat and Wild Cat) and help fight the evil fellower of Libila (and this are just some possibilities).

Groups
Search other players which travel the World of Wurm and ask to join them as it increases your survival rate drastically if you move in groups, especially if one or more experienced players are with you.

Enemys
But you don't have to... you can always be a bad one, rob, plunder and burn down everything which get's into your way, but this is another topic... (any Blacklighter cares to write?).
Always remember, this is a PvP server, means there are quite a few people who really like to kill you on sight, so my personal advice would be: join existing villages/communities and prepare for battle.

Final Note
Be friendly and ask politely, in most cases someone will help you to have a good start in many different ways.
And after all, you're free to do anything you would like to :)

This topic covers the most basic things you, a new player in Wurm Online, should know about.

What is Wurm Online?
Notch (Dev): "...Wurm is not an MMORPG... ;)"

It's Massively Multiplayer Online Fantasy Simulator (MMOFS)

Or you could call it a Life Emulator...

A world you can create and shape around you.
Introduction/Starter Tips
After starting Wurm you see the Login Screen, where one can enter his Username and Passwort. Below it is a checkbox, labelled "Play as Guest" which is enabled by default. You should uncheck it and enter a password to create a new "real" Account, because guest Accounts are not stored after you logoff.

Upon logging in, your avatar will spawn (see Spawning) in a village called Newtown (NT), you spawn here the first time you play, and also when you die (there are some exceptions).
Do not steal in and around NT. The guards will quickly make swiss cheese of your body.

The White Light (aka The White Beam, The White Thingy...ma bob),The White Pole Etc. This is the Altar of Three where you can convert to any of the good Gods.

*Magranon
*Fo
*Vynora

If you head North West from the White Light you will eventually find the Black Light where you can convert to the evil Goddess Libila. NOTE - If you join Libila you automatically become
Horde of the Summoned aka 'Blacklighter' (HOTS) and cannot spawn or go anywhere near NT.

If you get stuck in a large pit or cave and definitely cannot get out or if you find a bug/glitch Etc, type '/dev' to contact any of the GM's/Devs if they are online.
(See Helpful_People). Please use this feature sparingly.

^Section by Cooldude, cleaned up and added to wiki by --Lain Iwakura 23:25, 5 November 2005 (CST)

Movement
To move in the world of Wurm, simply use the WASD-keys on your keyboard. To look around, leftclick and hold in the 3D-view, and move your mouse. To center the view, press C on your keyboard.
Steep slopes require you to climb. To climb a surface, rightclick on the ground and select Climb. If you carry a lot of items, your stamina will drop like a stone while climbing. And you can not climb trees, sorry.

Important Hotkeys
The F-keys on your keyboard holds important access to things in Wurm.

F1 : Brings up the console, for debugging and generic information.
F2 : Skills. In this dialog you keep track of your body, religion, and skills. New skills are added as you learn and improve on them (i.e: Hot Cooking). Increment of skills in this game takes time.
F3 : Probably the most important hotkey in the game. This brings up the Inventory, where you keep all your items.
F11 : Take a screenshot. It is saved in your wurm directory/screenshots as a png file.
F12 : Quit the game. You are presented to a Yes/No-dialog before you can quit the game.

Equipping & Inventory
To equip an item (you can only hold one at a time), simply doubleclick an item in the inventory. You can work with items within the inventory, there is no need to drop them on the ground. As an example, you activate/equip the carving knife, and rightclick on a log in your inventory, to create new items with it. Note: If you carry too much, speed at which you walk is reduced. You can also become encumbered, and walk extremely slowly, by carrying very heavy items such as felled trees. Improve your strength skill to carry more.
Remember you can also use your bodyparts for certain things, like molding clay, by activating one of your hands by expanding the Body-category and doubleclick a hand, and then rightclicking the clay in your inventory, to work with it.

Interaction
Rightclick on objects, tiles, people, anything, to interact with it. A popupmenu appears saying "Requesting..." which means the game is fetching data from the server about the specific object you are trying to interact with. When it's done (which is fairly quickly), you are given several options in the menu of what to do with the object. There are different options for different objects. You get more options depending on what item you have active. For example, you are presented with another option called "Cut down" if you have the Small Axe active and rightclick a tree.

A menu that is in dark grey is cached. Not all options may work. It will be automatically replaced with the real menu when the data is recieved.
(Cutting down trees does not work with herrings!).

The Bars
* Green : Stamina/Energy
* Blue : Thirst
* Orange : Hunger

Refilling the bars
Stamina : Rest. The less thirst and hunger you have, the faster it regenerates. If you are low on stamina, you can not walk as fast as normal, and not climb very far. Injuri
Thirst : Rightclick Water and select Taste to see if it's alright. If it is, rightclick the water again and select Drink.
Hunger : Forage for food by rightclicking on grass and select Nature > Forage. This type of food can only be eaten when your character is starving. You are going to need to cook the food in order to eat it when you are hungry. This will be explained later.

Chat
In the lower left corner (by default), you have the chat-dialog. This is were you talk in Local, Kingdom, Village (when you become a citizen on a deed), and private messages.
The people shown in your local chat are the players within about 1 kilometer radius from your position. Both darklighters and whitelighters can talk here. As a new player, you talk in the Jenn-Kellon kingdom chat, where only whitelighters can talk.
To talk in kingdom when the window isn't open, use the /shout -command, like so /shout Look out for the truck!

To talk with only one player, use the /tell-command (or /t), like this for example: /tell Zyndrome Hello, you may already be an instant winner!
To close a private conversation or kingdom-chat, click the small X in the upper right corner of the dialog. Local chat can not be closed.

You may ignore somebody with the command /ignore, followed by their username. Unignoring is accomplished the same way. Ignoring a GM or a dev is a bannable offense.

--Zyndrome 07:07, 21 August 2005 (CDT)

The Bars
* Green : Stamina/Energy
* Blue : Thirst
* Orange : Hunger

Main Page :: Useful N00b Links :: How do i get Food/Cook guide

NOTE: Updating Soon,This guide will Change
Introduction
As a Newbie you will get free food for the first 24hours (real Time, not ingame) at the Tavern of Newtown. The Tavern is the green building in North-East Newtown.

Foraging And Botanizing
You will need to Forage and Botanize to make your Stew, Soup, or Casseroles. To do this right click a Grass Tile than select Nature > Forage or Botanize

NOTE: You can only forage/botanize once on the same tile every 24 hours. Any attempts past then will find nothing.

Pottery Bowl
To make your Pottery Bowl for cooking, you will need to first find clay, when you find a deposit Double Click your Shovel, than Right click the Clay Tile and Select Dig. You will get Clay, now Double click your left or right hand than right click and select Create > Containers > Clay Bowl. You will now either fail, get an Unfinished Clay Bowl or get a Clay Bowl. If the bowl is unfinished you will need to perform actions on it to finish it.

Put the (not unfinished) Clay Bowl in a Fire to finish the bowl, it should change colour and be called Pottery Bowl now.

Campfire
To create a campfire, first find a tree, double click your Small Axe and right click the tree than select Chop Down, keep selecting Chop Down to the same tree until the tree vanishes. Now there should be a log or a felled tree on the floor. For the felled tree right click than select Chop Down to create logs, Now double click either your Small Axe or Carving Knife than Right click the log and select Create > Miscellaneus > Kindling. Now that you have a Kindling Double click your Steel and Flint and right click the Kindling and Select: Create > Campfire

Combining all Three things to Cook
First off you should Forage and Botanize, now create your Clay Bowl and BEFORE you heat up the Clay Bowl put the Foraged And Botanized Item in the Bowl then put it in a Campfire. ( If you already have a Completely Finished bowl just put your food in the bowl and put it in the campfire) Note that you can add more than just one Foraged and Botanized Item in a bowl for a Larger Casserole. We'll cover the recipe for steak on this page as it's currently the most useful recipe.

Steak
Ok, First off you will need to fish using a Fishing Rod or Fine Fishing Rod Once you got a couple of fishes put them in a Frying Pan (Using a pottery bowl is possible but hard to find the right combination to make it a steak.) now add one botanized spice to your frying pan and just put it in your Fire and wait :) Eat up! Steak is the most nutritious food available in Wurm.

For those who only have pottery bowls to work with, the easiest way to make steaks is to add 1 Roach with 1 or more fishes in a pottery bowl. Roaches are a 0.1kg fishy you sometimes catch.

My Cooking Wont Go up.. why?!
You are probably cooking too high or low difficulty food, at Cooking Level 1 cook a couple of 3-5 Difficulty Foods, to check the difficulty Right Click then Examine the bowl it will also tell you what the food will turn out as. Try cooking lots of stews at once to gain cooking skill faster.

Gaining cook skill is a mystery, although Rolf has posted on the forums the way it should work, what works for one player doesn't always work for another. Use trial and error to find what works best for you.

Main Page :: Useful N00b Links :: How do i get Food/Cook guide

NOTE: Updating Soon,This guide will Change
Foraging And Botanizing
You will need to Forage and Botanize to make your Stew, Soup, or Casseroles. To do this right click a Grass Tile than select Nature > Forage or Botanize NOTE: You Cannot Forage in the same spot same goes for Botanizing

Main Page :: Useful N00b Links :: Basic Knowledge

This topic covers the most basic things you, a new player in Wurm Online, should know about.

What is Wurm Online?
Notch (Dev): "...Wurm is not an MMORPG... ;)"

It's Massively Multiplayer Online Fantasy Simulator (MMOFS)

Or you could call it a Life Emulator...

A world you can create and shape around you.
Introduction/Starter Tips

(Cutting down trees does not work with herrings!).

The Bars
* Green : Stamina/Energy
* Blue : Thirst
* Orange : Hunger

To talk with only one player, use the /tell-command (or /t), like this for example: /tell Zyndrome Hello, you are awesome!
To close a private conversation or kingdom-chat, click the small X in the upper right corner of the dialog. Local chat can not be closed.
