For numeric values? The usage is typically tied to language and region. In Britain, the USA, Canada, and Australia it's a dot. But in Sweden and Finland it's a comma. I'd lean towards the use of a dot since it's the accepted international decimal separator. Or we could clear it all up and use the mommayez character :D

There's no international standard that I know of, but as most (all?) english languages use the period, I'd vote for using the period. --Manny

I also agree that we should use the period. Jbobj 12:22, 3 October 2006 (CDT)

The 10th resolution of CGPM in 2003 declared that "the symbol for the decimal marker shall be either the point on the line or the comma on the line". In practice, the decimal point is used in English, and the comma in most other European languages. (Source).
Hence, I'm wrong about it being the international standard. Both are. But as stated, the convention in English is to use decimal point rather than comma. Hence it makes sense to use point on the English portion of this wiki, and the appropriate localised substitution for each translation.

Main Page :: Useful N00b Links :: The "how do I build a house?" guide.

Introduction
Often, one of the first questions a new player asks in Jenn-Kellon chat is 'How do I build a house?'. The answer is quite long and so has been documented here. This guide should provide the information you need to construct a house.

To plan and build a house, you will need:
* A flat area of ground.
* A mallet or an Iron Hammer.
* 20 planks per wall.
* 1 Large Nails per wall.

Note: The maximum size of your house is determined by your Carpentry skill. The formula seems to be:

<center>(total number of floor tiles) + (total number of wall sections) = Carpentry skill required</center>

So for a 2x2 house you would need:

<center>(4 floor tiles) + (8 wall sections) = Carpentry skill of 12</center>

If you are in a village, you may be able to persuade someone with high carpentry skill to plan your house and then hand over the writ.

Finding a Location
When you think you are ready to make your first house, the first thing you are going to need is a suitable place to do so. Bear in mind that you will want some basic resources nearby such as water, trees, and exposed rock for making a mine tunnel. Now that you have wandered around a little, if you believe you have found "The Spot" take a moment to check your local chat for other people. If no one is around, try to check around at least 30 tiles in every direction for existing houses and settlements. If you do find some sign of a settlement it is considered proper etiquette to contact the owner before beginning construction. While the established player does not own anything outside their deeded area, building on someone's doorstep is considered very rude. Normally, an established player will ask you to not build close, and may guide you to a location that is just as nice or better nearby. A good relationship with your neighbours improves everyone's experience in Wurm, and helps avoid misunderstandings.

Flattening the ground
After you find a suitable location you normally need to prepare the area. Before you plan your house the ground needs to be relatively flat. In order to flatten the ground "activate" your shovel by double clicking on it. Then right click on the ground where you want the house. This should display a menu with a Flatten option. Select flatten and you will do just that. Note that flattening affects the eight tiles around the tile you flatten. If you do not have enough skill to flatten the exact spot you can dig dirt from nearby and drop it on the tiles to bring it closer to level. See also Digging.

Woodcutting
For the planks and mallet you'll need get some lumber - this is easy - activate your axe and go to the nearest tree. It's a good idea to right click the tree and "examine" it before you decide to chop it down, only very old trees will provide a good amount of lumber. When you have found a tree that you are happy with simply right click it while your axe is activated and choose "cut down". You will need to do this multiple times before the tree is felled. Once it does fall you will see a felled tree on the ground (or just a log if the weight of the tree was below or exactly 25kg). Next you will need to cut up your felled tree in smaller pieces and thus create logs. Right click on the felled tree while you have your axe activated and select "chop up", now pick up the log and we will go on to planking and creating the mallet.

Creating planks
Planking is just as simple as any other action in Wurm, which is lucky since you will need
alot of planks to build your house, 20 for every wall actually. To make planks you activate
your saw (starting to see the logic yet?) and right click on your log, choose "create" and then "weapons" and "plank" in the sub-menu of create (plank being in the sub-menu of weapons). This is where you WILL start going wrong, planks can be failed and when you do you will only produce wood scraps, be patient with this because it will happen a lot - it's completely normal. Repeat the
log cutting and plank-making to create the amount of planks you need for the amount of walls you have.

Creating the mallet
If you fail in any of the following steps and create a wood scrap instead of the item, just start over and try again. Equip your Carving Knife, right click the Log in your inventory and select Create/Weapons/Shaft. Do this twice. Then right click one of the Shaft in your inventory and select Create/Miscellaneous/Mallet Head. Equip the Mallet Head and right-click the shaft, and select Create/Tools/Mallet. If all succeeded, you now have either a mallet or an unfinished mallet. If you have an unfinished one, you can try finishing it (examine it to see what it needs) or create a new one. There's a 20% chance that you'll create a finished one.

Iron
Next up is iron, this is the hardest part.

To find iron activate your pickaxe, right click on a tile that says "rock" and choose "prospect" from the "mining" sub-menu, finding iron is very difficult and you may have to search through hundreds of rock tiles before you manage to find an iron mine - its basically complete luck.

Prospecting for Iron. When you prospect a rock tile it show all Ore veins within a 7x7 area, you can use this to approximate the location of the ever elusive Iron Vein. Once you get the message there is Iron nearby you can start to tunnel for it. The first rock tile will break after mining it approx 25 times, all further tiles inside the cave take around 50. After your two tiles in you can start mining at different angles, well up or down anyway. Once you receive the message 'the wall will break soon' start mining up, mining down or mining(will go level) and your cave will go up, down or level. There are many methods of building a cave, one of the most thorough methods is to make your main shaft about 10 tiles long, then mine side shafts every other tile going in both directions.

Well, when you have found your precious Iron vein, it's time to start mining it to get to the ore, the "mine" options is also found in the "mining" sub-menu. Each mining action will deliver 20kg ore. Now you want to get to the iron inside the rock of these ores so you will have to smelt them, you do this by getting yourself another of those fancy logs and with your axe "create" a kindling from it, once you have this little nifty piece of wood you select your steel and flint, right click on the kindling and create a campfire with it (its under the container sub-menu). Now that you have your camp-fire its time to get smelting! Right click on your camp-fire and "open" it, drag the ore from your inventory to the camp-fires inventory. Next there's waiting - lots of it. MAKE SURE TO FEED THE FIRE WITH WOOD, OTHERWISE THE FLAMES WILL GO OUT AND YOU WILL HAVE TO START THE SMELTING PROCESS OVER FROM SCRATCH! I suggest you mine more ore while you do this but of course if you want to idle you can do that too. Right click on the ore and examine it to check how hot it is, once it reaches "glowing hot" you are very close to get your Iron Lump. When the ore has smelted it is replaced by a 1kg Iron Lump in the camp-fire, you will need at least 2kg for the next step.

Iron Anvil
The Small Anvil is a crucial tool in Wurm and this is what you will create now, get your 2 1.0kg Iron Lump from the camp-fire, (they have to be glowing hot for this to work) and activate one of them, right click on the other and choose combine. Now activate mallet you made earlier and right click on the 2kg Iron Lump, again choose create and pick iron anvil. If you are extremely lucky you will pull this off at the first try, if you don't put your iron scraps in the fire and let them smelt again so they can become Iron Lump once more (this take a long time though, so rather mine you some more ore and smelt it up). Repeat till you have your anvil.

Note: To reheat scraps they need to be below glowing hot (anything except glowing) before putting back into the fire, best time is when they cool down to searing hot (the one below glowing).

Nails
Nails! This is what you need to keep your house together, large iron nails. Pick up a Iron Lump of atleast 0.3kg and activate it, right click on your anvil and create, tools, large iron nails. When you succeed with this you will get a handful of Large Nails, you'll need one of these handfuls per wall of your house.

Planning the house
For every tile your house will occupy, you'll need 1 Carpentry skill. Also, for every wall you'll have you'll need 1 carpentry skill. So if you want to build a 1x1 house (the smallest house possible), you'll need 5 carpentry (4 walls, and 1 tile). To plan the house, go to your flattened piece of land, activate your mallet and right-click a tile, and select 'Plan building'. You can plan
additional (adjacent) tiles in the same way. When you're satisfied with your building shape, right click on it and select 'Finalize building'.

Building the house
Finally we can start to actually build the house. Activate your mallet and make sure you have atleast one handfull of large nails and a plank in your inventory, right click on a side of your house and select build, pick door, wall or window after your choice (remember that you need a door to be able to enter the house though) repeat this on all the walls. next you will have to pick up
more planks and continue to build, 19 more times on every wall to be exact since they all need 20 planks total.

When this is done so is your house, w00t!

Repairing your house
Your house walls may become damaged in time by decay, or can be damaged by someone trying to break into your house. To see the damage on one of your walls, right click the wall and select examine. This will display quality and damage of the wall. <br> <br>

To repair your house walls, activate a Plank, right-click your house wall, and select repair. Success rate depends on your Repairing skill. Failure results in losing the plank.

Improving your house
The higher the quality of your walls, the slower they decay, and the harder it is to break them for an attacker. To see the quality of one of your walls, right click the wall and select examine. This will display quality and damage of the wall. <strong>Tip:</strong> <br> <br>

To improve your house walls, activate a Plank, right-click your house wall, and select Improve. Success and amount of improvement depends on your Carpentry skill.<br>

Managing your Writ/Securing your Home
A Writ will appear in your inventory the moment you click 'Finalize Building' (They cannot be dropped, even if you die, but can be traded). Writs are used to control who has access to your home/building, lock and unlock doors, and rename the building. Add other players to your friends list, and they will appear on your Writ management screen. To allow access, simply select them as guests. :)

Writs also act as keys for any Doors on your home/building.

Fighting Tips
It's best to run from a spider the moment you see one moving towards you, unless you are sufficiently skilled, healthy and equipped to kill it. Spiders can kill single tower guards and can usually defeat 2 light deed guards if only facing 2. If you notice one fighting deed or tower guards you should go and help them defeat it. But be aware that if the guard that is currently fighting the spider dies, it could attack you next.
If there's anything you'd like to add, say it here in the description.

Eh hangon, why does this cover the same material that was in the beginners tutorial? I just updated the original to be more clear, concise, and easier to read. If you want to overhaul a tutorial you don't make a new page, you update the existing one. Some of the new info you've placed here like a description of each status bar is better than the original tutorial... --Foo 09:37, 29 September 2006 (CDT)

Don't worry.. still lots to add. It's not done yet.

That's not what I meant. If this tutorial covers the same material as the other tutorial, what do you propose happen to the other tutorial when this one is completed? --Foo 14:26, 29 September 2006 (CDT)

Keep it and let players decide which tutorial they want to read?

I can understand the need to start a new page off scratch and so far its starting to look very good, sometimes doing so is much better than fixing an outlay your not fond off.
--Malvado 07:42, 30 September 2006 (CDT)

But that's not the way a wiki is designed to work. The idea is to collaborate on each page and progressively improve it. Not for one person to decide what everyone else has done is unsuitable and craft a new page from scratch.

Foo: Why am I moving so slowly?

Q) How do I get started?
A) There are 3 things that are considered essential to getting started:
# You need to start developing your cooking skills, go here: Guide To Cooking
# You need to build a house, go here: The "how do I build a house?" guide.
# You need a chest with a lock for secure storage, go here: Secure Storage

* It is strongly recommended that you form or join a group, as cooperation is a key part of succeeding in any task.
* Try to stay close to Newtown until you get the hang of the game.

Q) What is that white beam/light/line?
A) It is called the White Light. At the base of it you will find the Altar of Three. From this you are able to become a follower of one of the three 'good' gods. Since Wurm went gold, the White Light is only seen on the Wild server. See Religion for further details.

Q) What is that black beam/light/line?
A) It is called the Black Light. At the base of it you will find the Bone Altar. From this you are able to become a follower of the one 'evil' god. Since Wurm went gold, the Black Light is only seen on the Wild server. See Religion for further details.

Q) What's the difference between equip and activate?
A) An active item can be used to interact with the world around you, like cut a tree down with your small axe active. You equip a weapon which is then used automatically while in combat.

Q) How do I activate an item?
A) Double click on it. It will show up at the bottom of the Inventory next to Active: This means that you can use the item for the tasks it is designed for.

Q) How do I equip a weapon?
A) Put it in your right hand. A second Weapon can go in the left hand, but it is used less often, so put your main weapon in your right hand. When you do so, you will get an event message: 'You equip a Short Sword in your right hand'. You may also want to put a shield on your left arm instead of a second weapon.

Q) Where do I get a Pelt?
A) Pelts are a product from Large Rats and Wild Cats. In order to get one, you first have to find and kill one of those animals. then you have to use a Butchering Knife to butcher the corpse. If you are successful, you will get a pelt. Alternatively, you may be lucky enough to find one for sale at a Trader, or you might find a more experienced player willing to give or sell you a pelt.

Q) Can I starve to death or die of thirst?
A) No. If those bars are empty, you wont be able to do some work, like mining and your Stamina will recharge very slowly. For more information, read Basic Knowledge.

Q) How do I get food?
A) If you have been playing less than 24 hours, you can get free food by visiting The Barkeep in the tavern at Newtown. While you take advantage of this free food it is recommended that you begin gaining skill at cooking, it is essential to the game. Start by making a Pottery Bowl and foraging some food, then cooking it in a fire. More detail can be found at the Guide To Cooking and the New Player Tutorial.

Q) Where are the rest of my beginner tools?
A) When a new character is created, some of your equipment is automatically equipped. So, check your Torso and Hands. See Inventory for further details.

Q) How Do I make money?
A) Unlike other games you may have played, money is not gained from killing monsters, but rather from the sale of items you have crafted to other players and Traders. You could also convert real-life <strong>&euro;</strong>'s<small>(Euros)</small> into <del><strong>¤W¤</strong></del>'s<small>(Wurm currency/silver)</small> using the Wurm store...

Q) Why is it so dark? I can't see
A) * The problem may lie with your graphics card. Check to see if it features a gamma adjustment setting. If so turn it up very high.
A) * The game features full day/night cycles and nighttimes are fairly dark. Time in Wurm is 8x real time so the darkness should only last 1 to 1.5 hours.

Q) How do I use a Large Anvil?
A) The Large Anvil is best used by carrying it in the inventory and making the lump active.

Q) How do I change game settings? How do I get better frame rates
A) On the log-in screen, there is an options button, you can change the settings there. More information on those settings can be found here

Q) What weapon should I create first?
A) A 10 ql Short Sword is good for killing rats and such.

Q) Why am I moving so slowly?
A) The speed of your character depends on a number of factors:
* The total weight of your inventory
* Your stamina
* The surface you are traversing
* Any injuries your character may bear

Wurm Online Tutorial
Welcome to the unofficial Wurm Online tutorial. This tutorial will teach you how to feed yourself and how crafting works in the world of the Wurm. You are currently reading the Wurm Wiki, which is an encyclopedia of information about the game. The Wiki is a collaborative effort by Wurm players and developers. In the Wiki you will find many different types of information such as tutorials, fan fiction & lore, maps of the world, descriptions of towns, and item descriptions. If you cannot find the information you require in the wiki, then you can request help in-game using the 'Jenn-Kellon' chat tab.

Some of the information printed here is covered in more depth in the Basic Knowledge article.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

The Interface
First of all I will explain the interface. In the upper left corner of the game window you will see some text and a few coloured bars, I will explain these one by one.

Skills
Hit F2 on your keyboard to show a list of your skills. There are 4 main categories in this window, characteristics, religion, and spell effects. The characteristic subskills are values representing the current state of your body, mind and soul, for instance, to be able to attack anything, your body characteristic must be at least 1.5, or you will be too weak. Each sub-characteristic is again divided into several under-under characteristics, which has their own functions. For instance, the maximum amount of weight you can carry is determined by your body strength.

Religion skills consist of 3 things, faith, favour and alignment. Alignment basically says whether you are good or evil, this is determined by the actions you do. Some gods won’t accept your prayers if you are evil for instance. Faith is a measure of how much your chosen gods like you, e.g. how much power they bestow in you. Faith is increased by praying at an altar dedicated to your chosen god, although it is capped at 30 for players who does not wish to become priests. Priests are dedicated to following the will of their gods, and as thus, a priest has the ability to cast his or her god’s at the cost of favour. Favor is the equivalent of mana in many other role playing games. Favor is only regained over time once used, so it should be used wisely.

The is by far the most interesting. It lists all the skills you have discovered, as well as a number representing your expertise within that skill. As your skills increase you will find that the various tasks in the game becomes easier, and you will make better and better items. Skills decay over time, as well as when you die, so take good care, your skills are the most valuable thing you have. Due to the skill decay, it is important to specialize if one wants to have high skills, as they will otherwise slowly decay.

Spell effects, or “buffs” as they are known in other games, are temporary magical effects that affect your character.

Inventory
The inventory menu (F3) contains 2 trees, your body and your inventory. Your inventory is where you carry the items you start with, create and pick up. Your body is where your equipped items are placed, as well as where wounds will be located when you take damage. If you click the + next to your body you will see your various body parts, as well as what they contain of wounds or equipment. The “Active:” on the bottom shows which tool or item you are currently using. To activate an item, double left-click on it.

Status Bars
Underneath the white text are 3 coloured bars. The green one is your stamina bar and tells you how much energy you have left to do actions. When you perform an action, your stamina will go down and you will need to wait for it to recharge before you do another action, or the action will take much longer to finish. Tired people work slower. The speed with which your stamina bar recharges is determined by your food and water bars, the orange and blue ones underneath the stamina bar. You can refill your water bar by drinking water from a tile with water on it, or from a container in your inventory. The food bar is refilled by eating, how to get food is explained later in the tutorial.

All actions except for moving are done by right-clicking. Try right-clicking a few things to see what options are available. Once the right click menu has loaded, you will at the bottom of it see an option saying “What’s this?” Clicking this will open an ingame window with an explanation of the item you right clicked on.

Chat and Events
The interface also consists of 2 text boxes, one for talking with other players, the other for the game to deliver messages to you. The Local tab is for chatting to people that are near you, you can see which people can see your messages in the list in the right side of the first box. The Jenn-Kellon tab is a global chat for all players of the same kingdom on your server. If you wish to send a message that only one other player can see, you can type in <em>“/t playername message”</em> to open a tab where you and <em>“playername”</em> can chat together in private.

The Event chat is, as mentioned, where you receive information from the game. If you fail or succeed an action, get attacked or the server is shutting down, this is where you can find the information. The buttons underneath it are used for toggling your status. “Climbing” will enable you to go up steep slopes, but it will heavily reduce your stamina, and you can not regain stamina while climbing. Faithful allows you to do actions that your god frowns upon, although you will lose some faith from it. When Lawful is activated, it will prevent you from doing illegal things. If you go unlawful, you can steal items, but be warned, guards do not like thieves.

The text next to the Lawful button displays more of your current status. The first word is your current fighting style, the rest can be either a warning about low stamina, low or high food and low water levels.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

First Steps
* Move about with the keys W, S, A and D keys. Turn by holding the left mouse button and moving the mouse. There is no jump key, movement in Wurm is very simplistic.
* You will start the game in Newtown (NT). NT is a relatively safe haven for new players, but as soon as you leave NT you must be wary of the many creatures that inhibit the lands of Wurm.
* Take your bearings using the Settlement_token in the centre of NT. This is found on the path next to the trader huts. On top of the token is a compass.
* If you get attacked by a creature, try to flee into water. Only a few animals (rats and bears) can pursue you across water.
* Village guards will attack creatures that enter deeded land so if you can make it into a deeded area (such as New Town) you should be safe.
* For the first 24 hours of your Wurm playing time (real life time spent ingame) you can get free food at the huts in NT.

After 24h have passed, you must obtain food via cooking or trade. Hence, it is wise to spend time learning to feed yourself. For this you will need a few items:
# Pottery bowl
# Ingredients
# Fire

The equipment in your inventory when you begin the game will enable you to obtain these items.

1. Ingredients
* To forage for food ingredients, find a patch of grass, and right-click on a grass tile then select Nature -> Forage.
* You will have to forage many different grass patches to obtain ingredients, and it's best to move away from NT for this, as each grass patch can only be foraged once in any 24h period. Hence, you need to find grass that nobody has foraged in the last 24h.
* Find a few berries, nuts and herbs before moving on to stage 2 of this tutorial.

2. Pottery Bowl
# You will need clay to make a pottery bowl. Clay is found near water.
# There is a small patch of clay on the northwest shore of NT, but it is useless due to overuse.
#For a reliable source of clay, head directly North out of NT (use the compass on top of the NewTown Settlement_token to find your bearings) and swim up-river to the north. Hug the coastline to your left as you head north, and you will eventually cross a crude land-bridge spanning the river.
#Keep following the coastline around the beachhead to the left and you'll begin heading more to the west. Where this coastline begins to turn back north again there is a very large area of clay which should meet your needs.
# Once you find a clay tile, open your inventory and double-click your shovel to 'activate' it.
# With the shovel 'active', right-click on your clay tile and select 'dig'
# You should then obtain a piece of clay in your inventory. Find your Right Hand in the 'Body' inventory, and make it active by double-clicking
# Right-click on the clay. Select create -> containers -> clay bowl.
# If creation of the bowl fails, repeat the steps until you succeed. If you make an unfinished clay bowl, keep trying until you make a finished one.
# Make a few clay bowls and perhaps also a clay jar while you're at it.
# Clay bowls must be fired into pottery bowls before they become useful.

3. Fire
# You need to obtain kindling to light your fire. Activate your Axe and find a tree. Examine the trees by right-clicking the ground around them and selecting 'Examine'. Pick a mature or old tree, and avoid fruit trees as they're unsuitable.
# Right-click the tree and Cut Down. When the tree is down, right click the felled tree and chop it up into logs.
# With a log in your inventory (Right-click -> Take), right click the log and Create -> Misc -> Kindling. Repeat until successful. Make a few spare for later, they're always useful.
# Activate your Steel & Flint, then right click the kindling and create a campfire. Once it's lit, activate some of the wood scraps you made while creating kindling and right click the fire. Burn the scraps to keep the fire going (Most wooden items can be burned to fuel a fire).
# You will need to fuel the fire with about 20 kg of wood every hour or so, you can see its status by examining. If it does not say “The fire burns steadily and will burn for a long time.” You need to put on fuel.

4. Completing the Bowls
# Put your empty clay bowls into the fire. Right-click the fire and select 'Open', then drag the clay bowls across from your inventory.
# The bowls will take quite a while to heat up and become pottery. While they do this, you can try making some different items from your log, botanize and forage more, or do something completely different, just make sure to examine the fire from time to time to see if it needs fuel.
# It is a good idea to put all your berries, nuts and spices into the fire as well (not inside the bowls), so they can heat up. This reduces the time needed to make food when you put them into the finished bowls.
# Once the clay bowls have turned into a pottery bowls (this will happen once the clay bowl has been glowing from heat for a while) take it out of the fire along with the ingredients.

5. Cooking a Casserole
# Drag one berry and one herb onto each pottery bowl in your inventory so they are located inside the bowl. Examine the bowl and it should mention the 'difficulty' of the casserole you're about to cook.
# Put the pottery bowls containing casserole ingredients back into the fire.
# Keep checking the pot in the fire until the contents of the pot turn into 'Casserole'. If you see the word “casserole” when you click the +, you have successfully made your first item of food.
# Take the pottery bowl out of the fire and eat the casserole if you are hungry. Otherwise, store the casserole in your inventory for later.

The food you make here at first is poor quality, and will not fill you up. However, it should fill you enough to enable you to work and gain stamina. As you cook more food, your skill will increase and you will make better and better food. Once you gain access to meat, fish and vegetables and have a frying pan, you can start making 'meals' with other ingredients. Meals are more valuable than casseroles or stews since they can fill your food bar to 100%.

What Next?
* Obtaining a fishing rod will give you access to a reliable method of obtaining meat, which is important for creating quality food.
* You could chop down a few trees to make wooden spindles, and later sell them to the trader where you started. From the money you earn, you could buy food, tools and weapons at the various traders.
* You could borrow use of a forge to smelt iron ore and create your first weapon; a Short Sword. The Short Sword has to be equipped in your right hand for most efficiency, you can later use this sword to kill attacking, weak, animals such as Large Rats.
* You could also create a Butchering Knife so you can get pelts and food from killed creatures.
* If you are lucky and ask around, you might be introduced to a nice village or neighborhood to live.

Call me daft, but isn't that the point of the wiki system; to edit as editors deem necessary, and moderate editors as editors themselves deem necessary?

<br><br>
The reason for that request was simply that you other editors show respect for the effort I have put into this tutorial. I've been spending hours writing, taking screen shots, rewriting and so on to make this guide as newbie friendly and understandable as possible. In all text I write, I strive to make a clear red line, a natural progress throughout the text, and as different people write differently, that would cause a distortion or even break the red line in the text, thereby making it less easy-to-read. THAT is why I requested that.
<br>
I see your post as a complete lack of respect for what I have spent hours on making, volountarily, for the new players in Wurm, a target group which I am not likely to recieve much feedback from.
:Thanks Lain, that's pretty much exactly what I'm trying to say. Spor, you can always see and re-revise what other people have changed in your tutorial with ease, so I seriously don't understand what the warning message is for. If someone were to insert misinformation to the wiki, their account would be terminated, they wouldn't be an editor anymore, and the page would be reverted.
:With all <i>that</i> said, I don't really have anything useful to add to, or revise in, the article - just argument for argument's sake. --Joshu 01:25, 20 July 2006 (CDT)
<br>
I just don't want the page to become messy and cluttered. If you feel you are able to not break or distort the red line in the text, and can write in the "same" language, then you can add. But as I said, I just don't want it to become hard to read, as it is already quite a wall of text. --Sporhund 13.05, 20 July 2006 (GMT +1)
Overhauled Tutorial
* Updated the tutorial to be clearer, moved all the images to the right bar and left the thumbnail sizing up to a users individual preferences and set captions for all of them.
* Bullet pointed and added numbered listings where appropriate.
* Spelling and grammar corrections.
* Removal of information that a new player doesn't need to know (The Console is a prime example).
* Removed redundant language/padding words.
* Took out a lot of the image spacings that were creating large blocks of white space in the text and making editing very difficult. It should now be possible to add and remove info from the page and the images will entirely take care of themselves.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

<br style="clear:both;"/>

<br style="clear:both;"/>

<br style="clear:both;"/>

The text next to the Lawful button displays more of your current status. The first word is your current fighting style, the rest can be either a warning about low stamina, low or high food and low water levels.
<br style="clear:both;"/>

<br style="clear:both;"/>

The Wurm Online interface also consists of 2 text boxes, one for talking with other players, the other for the game to deliver messages to you.

<br style="clear:both;"/>

3. Fire
To make the clay bowls into pottery you will need to heat them in a fire, which leads us to the final item for making food; the campfire. Find a tree, they look like this:

Once you find a batch of trees, go around examining them until you find one that says either “old” or “very old”. These trees give the most wood, and as thus, are the best to chop down. Activate your small axe and chop the tree. It will take a few chop actions, you can see how much damage the tree has by examining it.

Note: I do not recommend cutting down fruit trees, if you can find a pine, cedar, maple or birch tree, chop down that one instead, as you will need more wood for fuel. Fruit trees give very little wood.

Once it reaches 100 damage, it will disappear and a felled tree or a log will be in front of you. If it is a felled tree, right click it and select “chop up” to make a log. Once you have a log in front of you, right-click it and select “take”. You will now have the log in your inventory. With your small axe activated, right-click the log and select create -> miscellaneous -> kindling.

Once you have a kindling, you can make a campfire. To do this, activate your steel and flint and right-click the kindling. Select create -> containers -> campfire.

If you succeed, you will make a campfire in front of you:

Note: The campfire needs fuel to burn. If have more log, activate it and right-click the fire and select burn. You will need to fuel the fire with about 20 kg of wood every hour or so, you can see its status by examining. If it does not say “The fire burns steadily and will burn for a long time.” You need to put on fuel.

Now you need to put your clay bowls and jar into the fire and wait for them to turn into pottery. To do this, open the campfire and drag the items from your inventory window to the campfire window. The items will take quite a while to heat up, while they do this, you can try making some different items from your log, botanize and forage more, or do something completely different, just make sure to examine the fire from time to time to see if it needs fuel. Scrap wood can be burned too or made into more kindling. It is a good idea to put all your berries, nuts and spices into the fire as well (not inside the bowls), so they can heat up.

Once the clay bowl have turned into a pottery bowl, this will happen once the clay bowl has been glowing from heat for a while, take it out of the fire as well as the spices and berries. Now drag one berry and one spice onto the pottery bowl in your inventory so they are located inside the bowl and examine it. If it says something about casserole, put the pottery bowl inside the fire again (with the stuff in it), and click the + next to it. If you can still see the ingredients, they have not been warm enough, and you should continue feeding the fire until they disappear and a casserole appears instead. If you see the word “casserole” when you click the +, you have successfully made your first food. Take the pottery bowl out of the fire and eat the casserole if you are hungry. If not, save it for a rainy day by taking it out of the bowl and putting it in your backpack.

Now know, the food you make here at first is very bad, and will not fill you up very much, but it will fill you enough to make you able to work and have decent stamina regeneration, which is key for everything in Wurm. When you cook more food, your cooking skill will increase and you will make better and better food. Once you gain access to meat, fish and vegetables and have a frying pan, you can start making meals much the same way as the casserole, just with other ingredients. Meals are special since they can fill you 100%.

Congratulations! You have now finished the unofficial Wurm Online tutorial!

What to do next? - A few suggestions.
You could chop down a few trees to make wooden spindles, and later sell them to the trader where you started. From the money you earn, you could buy food, tools and weapons at the various traders.

You can also borrow a forge to smelt iron ore and create your first weapon; a Short Sword.
The Short Sword has to be equipped in your right hand for most efficiency, you can later use this sword to kill attacking, weak, animals such as Large Rats.

You should also create a Butchering Knife so you can get pelts and food from your killed creatures.

If you are lucky and ask around, you might be introduced to a nice village or neighborhood to live.

The history of the town Hammerfell
One of the oldest towns in Wurm, Hammerfell had its roots as an unofficial satellite of Whosville. After the fall of WV however, the people of Hammerfell struck out as their own entity. Settling in a narrow valley, we founded a small village and named it Pit because of the location and its mining effort. But the town of Pit was short lived. After a betrayal from within Pit met its destruction and we began searching for a new home. After exploring vast lands, Krelos led us to our home in the mountains. Here we grew in size and power and gained a reputation as some of the greatest road builders.
But it was not meant to last.

The great cataclysm struck and all that was ceased to be. We found ourselves in a new land of virgin forests and fierce trolls. It was in this place we finally took the name Hammerfell and grew into a great city. Peace was foreign to this land and raiders roamed free across the world. It was during a time of peace, declared by the gods themselves, that the raiders struck at us. They escaped with such stealth that even the servants of the gods did not see them as they emptied our storehouses of gold. Outraged at the gods indifference to this crime against their decree, we struck back at them in full force and crippled their base of operations. Or so we thought. Over the next few months reports of new attack began to come in. Eventually entire towns were destroyed and many survivors sought refuge with us, telling stories of terrifying warriors who could not be hurt.

In the end we too were assaulted by this mysterious force. They bled out of the forest near Hammerfell and walked toward the walls with steady complacency. Shouts went up and our warriors went out to meet them as the archers climbed the wall. When they reached our men we realised why they were invulnerable. They were the very same raiders we had slain many months before, now walking dead and unable to die a second time. Though there was far fewer of them, they quickly overwhelmed our force and made for the walls even as they were filled with arrows. All seemed lost and we were forced to flee the city with what we could carry. From a hilltop some kilometers away we could see the fires burning Hammerfell to the ground and sending a column of smoke into the clouds. All we had known for so long, destroyed in a single night. We also learned that our close neighbors and allies, Daargard and Asgard had met the same fate that night.

Those who had the desire to rebuild returned to the city several days later. The long process had barely begun however when a messenger from the gods came. He told us that soon all would be remade, all that was lost would be regained and we would be taken to a new world. That night we went to sleep in our ruined city but woke atop a hill in a place we did not know.

Some of us chose to reject violence utterly and founded the Abbey of Lhasa. Others wanted to learn the dark ways and gain the power that we had seen in the undead. Still others wanted to pursue a peaceful life, much as they had always known. And so for many years, Hammerfell ceased to be. But now our return is at hand and we will raise up a great kingdom, united under the banner of Hammerfell. A kingdom of strength and honor, standing against the darkness that creeps out from the black altar.

New Citizens are always welcome, but be warned, thieves will not be tolerated. We as always, welcome free speech and are a very laid back and friendly community.
Come check us out!

The town has a wonderful road leading from NT through a tunnel in the NT mountain and then up to the town itself, along this road for the safety of our members there are three Inns for resting at, two of the Inns have there own towers just for extra protection from spiders.

The town its self is set inside a huge mud wall topped by tall stone walls, everything you ever wanted is in the surrounding area and our members are only too willing to lend a hand to new members.
