Introduction
Combat rating is the system in wurm, which decides how often you miss and get missed in combat. It is a numerical value calculated from a variety of factors. A higher combat rating makes you hit your opponent more, while making your opponent hit you less.

The system
When two players do battle, combat rating is used to decide how large a percentage chance each player has to hit their opponent.

Combat rating is a value derived from many variables.
It can be affected by the environment.

Combat Rating system info from Rolf:

First of all, the bonus is applied to something that is called Combat Rating or CR for short in the system. Every creature has one. It is very similar to the concept of levels in other games, just that it fluctuates a lot more in wurm. It is the basis for calculating the chance to hit another creature. Players have a base combat rating of 4.

If the troll I am fighting has CR 10 and I have CR 4 I have about 4/(10+4) chance to hit the troll, or 29% every attack. The troll on the other hand has 10/14 so it'll hit me 71% of his attacks.
Very simplified. There are parry bonuses and covers involved in that specific algorithm. Also your basic fighting skill is added 1 per 10 in skill, so if you have fighting 59 you have a CR of 4+5.9=9.9 in base CR. Monsters have their type modifying base CR, making Champion creatures have maybe double the figure of the standard type.

A lot of things also affect the combat rating before that algorithm. Things such as footing, if you are prone, certain combat moves affect it negatively, being flanked, height distance to target, focusing, being drunk.. things like that. And also the kingdom bonus.

Now, in Player versus Player combat the base fighting skill is added 1 point per 5 in skill instead, so a player with 99 fighting skill would have like 23.98 in base CR and one with 50 fighting skill would have CR 14.

So how much is the kingdom bonus?
The kingdom bonus is 2 if your kingdom has less than 10% of the server population. It is 1 if the kingdom has 20% or less of the population.
Normal fighting (fighting subskill). "Max combat rating bonus for normal fighting was raised to 2.5" -Release notes July 12, 2011

Kingdom bonus. An Elevation- and Chaos-only feature, there are two steps to this kingdom bonus. If your kingdom has less than 20% of the server online, you receive an extra 1 combat rating. If your kingdom constitutes less than 10% of the server population, you gain another point of combat rating, for a total of 2 extra.

Fighting subskill currently have no effect on combat rating. They may have other effects however. Due to the double-working nature of combat rating, getting more will not only make you hit more, but also get hit less.

It is believed that PVP and PVE use different formula. Neither of which have had substantial testing to know the inner workings.
Introduction
Rivendell is the new name, for a newly built town, on a newly created map of Wurm. But it is the 4th incarnation, of what the concepts and beliefs, of a small group of people (Northernstar, Clipcomet & Wintersolstice) who saw the need for change from within the game of 'Wurm Online' was needed at the player level and decided to do something about it.

So Northernstar invited the newbie Wintersolstice, who was then named Mrasshole, to join the town of White Templers on the northern coast, one of the two nearest settlement to the isle that held the Altar of Three and the White Light, the other was the Hidden City of Mist. Clipcomet took the newbie under his wing and helped him out when needed. The map ended not long after and the last beta map soon would start.

When the last Beta map started Wintersolstice joined Fathertime and a couple others, headed to the northeast corner of the map and found Haven Lake and the spot for the town of Haven.
Rivendell
Rivendell is the new name, for a newly built town, on a newly created map of Wurm. But it is the 4th incarnation, of what the concepts and beliefs, of a small group of people (Northernstar, Clipcomet & Wintersolstice) who saw the need for change from within the game of 'Wurm-Online' was needed at the player level and decided to do something about it.

So Northernstar invited the noob WinterSolstice (then named Mrasshole) to join the town of White Templers on the northern Coast, one of the two nearest settlement to the Isle that held the Altar of Three & the White Light, the other was the Hidden City of Mist. Clipcomet took the noob under his wing and helped him out when needed. The map ended not long after and the last beta map soon would start.

When the last Beta map started WinterSolstice Joined Fathertime & a couple others, headed to the northeast corner of the map and found Haven Lake and the spot for the town of Haven.
Used to dig up dirt, clay, and peat. Can also be used to flatten land or pack dirt for faster travel. Shovels can cut down trees and bushes, albeit more slowly than a proper axe or hatchet. Shovels are the primary tool for terraforming, landscaping and building roads and paths. If your character has 21 body strength, you may use a shovel to destroy pavement such as cobblestone, gravel, or stone slabs. It is a terrible implement for fighting, and is not recommended for such purposes. The shovel provided for you as part of the set of beginner gear from the guide cannot be improved. You must make a new shovel from scratch to obtain one over QL10.

WARNING: The shovel given with the beginner set is made out of birchwood and is burnable. Take care as to not accidentally put it into a campfire, forge or oven! If you lose it in this way, you will have to either make a new one from scratch or ask other players for help in aquiring a new one.
Ianpwnsjoo created his account on September 23, 2007. He is currently a WL'er on the Wild server, living in the size 15 village of Rivendell.

Ian's first home was his friend Ronn's size 5 homestead, Nefarius. A month later, Ronn sold Nefarius to Dipse, who subsequently disbanded it.

Ian, Ronn, Phil, and Nikolai then moved approximately one kilometer north of Kyara to found the size 5 village of Hollowvale, with Ronn as the mayor. Mid-december 2007, Ian's fellow villagers all became bored of Wurm and decided to quit. Not being one to give up that easily, Ian accessed the mayor Ronn's account and disbanded Hollowvale.

He then moved to the size 15 village of Rivendell. Once there, he helped dig defensive trenches for several days before being admitted as a citizen. He quickly made friends within Rivendell and now serves the other villagers as a digger, carpenter, chainsmith, blacksmith, fighter, medic, and occasionally as a miner.
*Goblins are regional creatures, they will spawn in specific areas of each map.
*Can't swim.
*Butchering products - meat.

Special treats
Goblins can randomly loot corpse and will use any weapons found to fight with.
They will go into a frenzy if you are low on stamina and health. Goblins are attracted to any fighting, including fights with any goblins, making it a certain death if you are not paying attention.

Fighting tips
These are fairly weak little creatures but they are not to be underestimated. Alone one of these goblins can be a pushover. But if you're caught off guard with alot of them, it can get messy.
*25 fighting with at least full studded leather and 30ql weapons recommended. (Wild server)
*Avoids deeded areas.
*Spiders on the Wild server are stronger then the spiders on the Home server.
*Spawns on land.
*Successful butchering produces several kgs of meat

Fighting Tips
#Spiders take extra damage from swords. Try to use them.
#Using a full set of chain or plate armour

In the old system, spiders were very dangerous, and it was quite common to be killed by one when running through the forest. Now, they are much less common and they have been severely nerfed. A huge spider can be killed quite easily by a character with 25 fighting, dual 40ql longswords, and 50ql studded leather.

Ianpwnsjoo:

Arkanor is a Jenn-Kellon player who currently resides in Woodscove on the Wild Server. He follows Vynora. Arkanor specializes in smithing, specifically Blacksmithing. Current titles are (in order of receipt): Miner, Blacksmith, Trollslayer, Goldsmith.

History
Ademar
Arkanor started Wurm during the first week of Gold 2, spending the first week as a nomad with no skill specialization and a very low foodbar. Fortunately, Surplusxmas invited him to join the newly formed village of Ademar, providing a stable base for Arkanor to 'get his footing'. As time passed he became the village blacksmith and weaponsmith, eventually being offered (and declining) a position as a Mayor. Instead accepting a promotion to Elder, he remained in Ademar until 18 August 2007, when he elected to leave due to continuing inactivity among Ademar's citizens.

Jewelspar
Suiciding to NT, he applied and was accepted into Jewelspar as a trial citizen on 19 August 2007. Electing to live off-deed rather than in communal on-deed housing, he eventually created a walled compound with house, and over the course of several apathy-laden weeks replenished his supply of tools and miscellaneous items. Unfortunately the scourge of inactivity had followed him, laying waste the brave citizens of Jewelspar one by one. From the second week in September onward Arkanor, not being a cook, subsisted on raw meat. Eventually Oni paid a visit to Jewelspar, prompting Arkanor to cave into loneliness and boredom (and hunger). With a cart of worldly possessions, he departed Jewelspar on 7 October 2007.

Grimston
Accepting Oni's offer, Arkanor moved to Grimston, rafting his items south along the shoreline. After two months of living like a hobo due to not having a house on-deed, Arkanor was pleased to have a house, forge, and iron mine all in close proximity. Not to mention food. He spent a month in Grimston in comfort working on skills, but also in boredom. By the start of November the monotony of Home began to take its toll at long last, and something more was needed. Something... Wilder.

Woodscove
Arkanor gave Oni the deed to his house on 9 November, left all his items behind, and set out West towards Wild on 10 November. Crossing south of the Black Light, he suicided to the Landing and walked from there to the site of what would become the first Size 20 (later size 50) village in Gold 2, Woodscove.
Improvements
# Activate a Plank.
# Right click a wall and select Improve.
The house must be at 0 damage in order to be improved. It is possible to improve with planks lower quality than the wall itself.

Usage
See the The "how do I build a house?" guide.

Changing
Once the wall is complete, you may change it into a different kind of wall (window or door) by activating a hammer, right-clicking the target, and clicking Build > (whatever). This requires 1 plank and a further 19 to complete. Note: there will be a gap in the wall until completion!
