== Description ==
Runes are items that can be used to give other items a bonus, or used one time to activate their effect.

There are 65 different rune effects in Wurm, using combinations of 13 different [[metal]]s and 5 possible [[god]]s available.

== Creation ==

[[File:rune1.jpg|200px|thumb|right|Stone Rune of Vynora, Brass]]

Runes are crafted by using different materials found at [[rift]]s ([[rift crystal]], [[rift stone shard]], and [[rift wood]]) combined with a lump of metal. The different combinations will create different rune types, each type giving a different effect.

When crafting a rift resource with a lump of metal, you are given the option of 5 different rune types:
*[[Fo]]
*[[Magranon]]
*[[Vynora]]
*[[Libila]]
*[[Jackal]]

Crystal runes use [[jewelry smithing]] to create. Stone runes use [[stonecutting]], and wood runes use [[fine carpentry]].

Each god and metal combination creates a rune of a different effect; that is, a brass rune of Libila will not have the same effect as a brass rune of Magranon. Some may be similar in effect, with different strengths. Any player of any religion can make any rune of any god-type. However, creating runes of one's own corresponding god-type gives a bonus and is easier at creation. Jackal runes are, therefore, the most difficult to work with all the way around.

== Effects ==
The combination of metal type and god type will determine the effect of a rune.

The rift resource used will determine what the rune can be attached to or used on.
*''Rift wood runes'' - can be used on [[Carpentry|wooden]] items, and use fine carpentry skill to create.
*''Rift crystal runes'' - can be used on metal items, and use jewelry smithing skill to create.
*''Rift stone runes'' - can be used on [[:Category:Masonry_items|stone]], [[pottery]], [[:Category:Cloth_tailoring_items|cloth]] and [[leatherworking|leather]] items, and use stonecutting skill to create.
*<nowiki>*</nowiki> Reduces age by a percentage of the current age. Creatures cannot be pregnant when the rune is used. The minimum age this can be used on is Aged (12 months). Does not work on aggressive animals until you tame / dominate / charm them.
*<nowiki>**</nowiki> Runes of The Scavenger can be found on items recovered through [[Archaeology#Restoration|Restoration]], and cannot be created or attached to existing items.
*<nowiki>***</nowiki> "Skill level bonus" reduces the distance of the skill's value from 100 by the percentage given, but only for the purpose of random skill checks. For example, a [[pickaxe]] with this rune would harvest slightly higher quality ore on average, but will not increase the maximum quality possible.

===Notes===
* Runes for raking/gathering, gathering quality, and vehicle speed can be added to any material, regardless of their own material.
* Any rune with raking or gathering effects will also effect [[milking]] actions.

== Attaching ==
* Application of runes can usually be done by the owner. For vehicles, manage permission is required.
* Chance to successfully attach a rune depends on player [[Soul Depth]] and the [[Quality]] of the rune. Failure results in complete loss of the rune. The success chance one has to successfully attach a rune can be seen by activating the rune and right-clicking the object it will potentially be attached to.
* On-deed, the player doing the attaching must have improve/repair and pickup [[permissions]].
* Can only attach them to completed items.
* Only one rune can be attached to an item.
** Attaching a new rune will replace the previous rune.
** If replacing the color change rune (Adamantine, Jackal), the color will remain on the item.

== Additional Notes ==
*Creation success will consume 0.2kg of the material, failure consumes 0.01kg.
*Runes '''decay''' dramatically fast outside of inventory.
*Runes are '''removed''' by a priest's dispel casting.
** Runes can also be replaced by attaching a new rune.
*Runes with the ''Glow'' effect cannot be applied to items that can be lit, such as forges or smelters.
*Runes that increase ''volume'' will allow the affected container to hold more of items that already fit.
*Runes that increase ''size'' will allow the affected container to hold bigger items. They will also increase the amount of [[dye]] needed to paint that item.
*Any runes on weapon heads or spear heads will transfer over to the completed item when combined.
* Some Archeology items can be found with one or more runes on the item.
** If replacing the color change rune (Adamantine, Jackal), the color will remain on the item.

== Description ==
Runes are items that can be used to give other items a bonus, or used one time to activate their effect.

There are 65 different rune effects in Wurm, using combinations of 13 different [[metal]]s and 5 possible [[god]]s available.

== Creation ==

== Effects ==

** Attaching a new rune will replace the previous rune.
** If replacing the color change rune (Adamantine, Jackal), the color will remain on the item.
== Additional Notes ==
*Creation success will consume 0.2kg of the material, failure consumes 0.01kg.
*Runes are '''removed''' by a priest's dispel casting.
*Runes that increase ''size'' will allow the affected container to hold bigger items. They will also increase the amount of [[dye]] needed to paint that item.

[[Complete DB|Main]] / [[:Category:Game mechanics|Game mechanics]] / '''{{PAGENAME}}'''

== Description ==
Runes are items that can be used to give other items a bonus, or used one time to activate their effect.

There are 65 different rune effects in Wurm, using combinations of 13 different [[metal]]s and 5 possible [[god]]s available.

== Creation ==

== Effects ==

There are 65 different rune effects in Wurm, using combinations of 13 different [[metal]]s and 5 possible [[god]]s available.

== Creation ==

== Effects ==

===Notes===
* Runes for raking/gathering, gathering quality, and vehicle speed can be added to any material, regardless of their own material.
* Any rune with raking or gathering effects will also effect [[milking]] actions.
* Some Archeology items can be found with more then 1 rune on them

== Attaching ==

== Additional Notes ==

[[Main Page]] / {{PAGENAME}}

== Introduction ==
[[File:Riftbeacon.jpg|200px|thumb|right|Rift Beacon]]

A rift is a test laid down upon the people of the lands by the gods. It consists of a bright, glowing-red portal, waves of quite deadly creatures brought forth through that portal, and a battle system with which to shut down the terror and satisfy this wicked test of strength and solidarity by the gods.

== Process of Events, How It Works ==

* First, a light beacon will appear on a server (one beam per server at one time), 2 real-life days before the rift will open on PvE and 3 real-life hours before opening on PvP. The location is random each time but always in a non-deeded area. This is where the gods will open the rift portal.

* At the same moment the light beacon appears an [https://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/198721-patch-notes-12-sep-2023/ unfinished colossus] for each god will be placed north south east and west of the beacon. Parts can be added to these and each part has a chance reward you with rift points and rift materials. Adding parts to any colossus will give you rift sickness. Rift sickness increases difficulty of working on the colossus, but decreases over time. Within the final 12 hours before a rift opens rift sickness is no longer added. Players can work on colossus of gods they do not follow at an increased difficulty. Completing a colossus will create an additional beam of light and an effect will be applied during battle when the rift opens. The three white light gods give a white beam, where Libila will produce a black beam. The effects are as follows:

{| class="wikitable"
|-
! God !! Effect
|-
| Vynora || [[Excel]]
|-
| Magranon || [[Mass stamina]] and [[Frantic charge]]
|-
| Fo || Healing and [[Willowspine]]
|-
| Libila || Rift enemy spawn count is increased and upon death players do not lose skills other than strength and fight skill.
|}

* The rift participation area is a 41x41 square centered around the rift-light. One can check to see whether one is in the participation area or not by using the /rift command. If the rift has not yet started, the number of hours until the rift opens will be displayed.

* Next, when the rift portal actually opens (48 hours after the beacon first appears), it will clear all the trees within its borders and turn all terrain into dirt. It will also spawn a number of traps, rift stones, rift crystals, and rift plants in the rift zone. Terraforming attempts in this area will be blocked until the rift is closed. Additionally, the rift will spawn a rift altar and a wave of deadly [[rift creature|rift creatures]] that will only fight players within the zone.

* After the first wave of rift creatures is defeated, two more increasingly difficult waves must subsequently be defeated in order to close the rift. In order to progress to the next wave, 20 rift hearts must be butchered and removed from any rift creatures and then burned at the rift altar in sacrifice. An examine of the altar will always show the remaining number of hearts needed in order to bring about the next wave of rift creatures, and the altar is always located within several tiles of the rift beam itself. Progression through the rift in this way can take place at any time, despite any living rift creatures or the current wave taking place.

* The third and final wave of rift creatures will include a [[Warmaster]] and provides the most difficult wave of fighting. Once this wave is disbursed, players must sacrifice 20 more hearts to the rift altar, at which point an event message will convey across the server: {{event|inline|The Rift that has plagued <server name> has been shut!}}. The rift is now closed, the gods have been satisfied, and rank-based rewards are then automatically spawned to the participating players' inventories. It is also at this point that the rift area's rift materials (see section below) will become harvestable.

== Ranking, Rewards ==

*Rifts work off of a points system. Depending on the amount of kills and damage dealt by a player, they can get a higher participation ranking. The rankings range from "minimal" (least impact) to "phenomenal" (most impact). The better the rank, the more rewards attributed to that player.
* Rank rewards are a number of rift points, some rift materials as listed below, and lumps of [[glimmersteel]], [[seryll]], and [[adamantine]].
** Rift points are redeemable at the [[Rift points shop]] or Lormere Ltd by right-clicking on a mailbox.
* Anytime while a rift is still open and active, the player may type the chat command '''/rift''' in order to see the current participation rankings. Attempts to bring up the list outside of the actual rift area while it is still active will not work. After the rift is closed, however, the command can be issued from anywhere on that server in order to view the final ranking list.

* Players with more than 60 participation (phenomenal) rank will tend to receive less random lump quality levels and weights. Instead, they will generally receive lump quantities, qualities, and weights based on that rank with much less swing toward randomness.

* Rare items being rewarded generally tends to occur mainly for participants placing 3rd or better at final rank.

* Any player who participated in at least 10 kills will get a lump of uncommon metal ([[Seryll]], [[Glimmersteel]] or [[Adamantine]]) of random rarity, quality, and weight, at the rift's close.

* Players must be online and on the server when the Rift closes to receive rewards as well as credit for participation (per "Destination Unknown" [[Journal]] requirements).

== Rift Materials ==

In addition to spawning to player inventory based on rank at the end of a rift, rift materials can also be manually collected from the immediate rift area once that rift has been closed. The three rift resource types are rift stones, rift crystals, and rift plants:

* [[Mining|Mine]] a [[rift stone]] to gather [[rift stone shard]]s.
* [[Prospecting|Prospect]] a [[rift crystal (node)]] to gather [[rift crystal]]s.
* [[Woodcutting|Cut]] down a [[rift plant]] to gather [[rift wood]].

Rift materials can be difficult to harvest without adequate skill, with much of the rift plant, stone, or crystal being wasted on any failed attempts to harvest.

Rift materials are primarily utilized for the creation of [[rune|runes]].
==Rift creatures==
Certain creatures only appear at rifts or on the moon [[Jackal]].
* [[Rift beast]]
* [[Rift caster]]
* [[Rift jackal]]
* [[Rift summoner]]
* [[Rift ogre]]
* [[Rift ogre mage]]
* [[Warmaster]]

== Rift Scout Camps ==
Besides the regular recurring rifts, small scout camps can randomly spawn. A rift scout camp is a minimal version of a rift. A few rift creatures spawn in a random place on the server, and after all rift creatures are killed, participants receive a small amount of rift points. Also closing a rift scout camp allows for harvesting Rift Materials like mentioned above.
A rift scout camp does not show a red beacon, and you don't have to sacrifice hearts to close a rift scout camp.

== Additional Notes ==

* The no-drop zone for tents extends out 30 tiles from the rift beacon.

* When a rift beacon appears, a player may walk through it for the "Rift Investigator" [[achievement]]. When the rift is closed, the player will then receive the "Rift Defender" and "Rifter" [[titles]].

* Rift hearts are of no other use in Wurm aside from burning at the rift altar.

* Rift creatures can only attack players within the rift area. Evacuate the area when in danger!

* Players must be premium to receive rift rewards at the close of the rift.

* Rift monsters have a chance to attack mounted animals. Use caution when riding a horse at a rift, Suggested to use barding other defensive options for animals.
