Sculpting wand

Description
A slender wooden twig that has been grown in a spiral around something.

The Sculpting wand is a special item that was given out in Christmas 2008 as a gift to premium players at Newtown, The Shroud, Gold Coast, The Landing and at Alchemist Bay. It can be used to lower tile corners in some situations where it would be hard or impossible otherwise.

It is a non-drop item

Usage
Use
The use option on the sculpting wand changes the power of the wand. A message is given that tells how much dirt is removed per use:

* You rub the wand and it makes a barely audible humming sound.: Removes 1 dirt per sculpting action.
* You rub the wand and it makes a humming sound.: Removes 3 dirts per sculpting action.
* You rub the wand and it makes a loud humming sound.: Removes 5 dirts per sculpting action.

Sculpt
Activate the sculpting wand and right-click a tile. Select the Sculpt option to remove dirt from the north-western corner of that tile. Each action will remove the amount of dirt set with Use and lower the quality of the wand by the same amount. The dirt is destroyed and not dug. You won't get any dirt or rock in your inventory or on the ground.

The sculpting wand can not be used on tiles with fences, houses, pavement, trees or crops on the tile or any surrounding tiles or if the surrounding slopes added together exceeds 201.

The sculpting wand has a minimum quality of 1QL therefore you can lower a tile up to one less than the current quality of the wand. A 60QL wand for example allows you to remove 59 dirts.

Warning: Using the wand to sculpt with the 3 dirt or 5 dirt options results in you getting falling damage if you stand on the corner that's being lowered.

Recharge
The sculpting wand can be recharged at any altar for 5 silver per 10QL. Activate the sculpting wand and right-click the altar. The Recharge option opens a window asking if you would like to recharge the wand. The required 5 silver are taken from the inventory.

The sculpting wand can be recharged to a maximum quality of 99QL.

Mongolian Hunting Guide
The purpose of this guide is to share information, hints and tips regarding hunting on freedom to readers.

The information provided below comes from our [Members from Mongolia] personal experience with fighting/hunting and is what works for us.

The rules of hunting
Always consult people for knowledge on local hunting grounds and try to discover what works best for you.

Always be considerate of others.

Always assist people in danger.

Always bury your kills.

Never dig up tundra.

Never bash spawners.

The hunter in you
Consider the following questions:

* Do you live in a populated area?
* Is the local area around you mostly deeded?
* Are you only interested in hunting within your local area?

If you answered yes to any of these questions then hunting may not be in your best interest.

Please understand:

* You will want to move away from other players to improve your chances of finding creatures alive.
* Living in a populated area affects hunting as creatures will not spawn on deeds and any locations containing too many animals within a small locality.
* Sometimes you need to leave your local area and venture to places where few people travel to. The best hunting spots are often the ones that few people visit. This may include valleys deep within mountain ranges or the deserted and partially abandoned islands.

Knowing the prey
It is important to understand how the AI and spawners work.

* Back in the days of when Golden Valley was open to the public, many creatures spawned on mountain sides and cliffs and became stuck as they were unable to come down. To resolve this issue, Rolf modified the AI slightly and made it so that some creatures especially wolves, dogs and bears would always seek to go downhill.

* Creature spawners naturally succumb to decay over a very long period of time. This affects the hunting ground every few months.

* Animals can spawn somewhere up to 50-100 tiles away from the the spawner.

* In some extremely rare circumstances, spawners can also be found in caves. This is not a bug. Spawners in caves also decay much quicker. (Confirmed by Enki)

* When a creature has its back turned to you, it has a smaller agro range.

* If your combat rating is high, some creatures tend to have a smaller agro range to you. This is very noticeable with wildcats once you reach 50+ fighting. It is sometimes possible to walk right up to one, kiss it, and still not have it agro you as if it completely refuses to fight you.

* Wolves, dogs and champion creatures tend to move around a lot.

* Wolves and huge spiders naturally have a very large agro range.

The hunter, their equipment, style and why
Weapon, armour, shield and horse:
* Mauls - Mauls may be slightly slower than swords but they make up for this with power. Mauling damage also suffers the least penalty when striking against armoured creatures such as scorpions. For this reason alone, mauls are the most effective and versatile weapons when fighting against creatures. Some veteran players also believe that it is the best weapon overall for both PVP and PVE.

* Shield - To protect you from blows.

* Short Bow - Bows are useful for luring creatures off the side of mountains and inaccessible terrain. Medium and Long bows have a minimum range and shooting long distances doesn't always lure the creature to you. If the creature gets hit by an arrow and is too far away from you, it doesn't detect that you have attacked it and sits idle as if nothing happened. Short bows work best because there is no minimum range and its ideal range is just close enough to lure creatures towards you.

* Studded Leather - Studded leather offers similar protection to chainmail but weighs a lot less and is therefore less cumbersome and uses less stamina than chainmail making it ideal for climbing or travelling in difficult terrain where one may be forced to dismount from their horse.

* Any Horse - The faster the better - Fighting from horseback gives you a height advantage when engaging creatures on leveled terrain and having a height advantage will improve your combat rating. It is also very useful for escaping from danger.

Fighting stance, focus and targeting:
* Normal Fighting - Train normal fighting whenever possible. The most dangerous fights you will ever engage in are the ones where you are suddenly ambushed by dangerous creatures (Such as an aged starving troll). The safest way to fight against a tough opponent solo is to fight in a stance that offers you a decent hit chance without compromising your safety to the point where you risk serious injury or death. Normal fighting offers a balance between hit chance and dodge/parry rate.

* Focus - Focus affects your hit chance and dodge/parry rate by raising your combat rating. It uses stamina each time you attempt it whether you succeed or fail. Personally, i avoid using focus unless I know the fight against the opponent will be a long one such as when fighting trolls. Choosing when to focus is very important as you stop hitting while focusing and blows to your body can interrupt you. I find the best times to use focus is right after I block an opponents attack.

* Target - Whenever it becomes reliably possible, target the head of the opponent. Blows to the head of creatures do more damage. Be aware that each time you attempt to target specific body parts, a bit of your stamina is used up. Stamina affects your chance to dodge/parry, your attack speed and possibly your hit chance. Always keep your stamina as high as possible before and during fighting.

Miscellaneous equipment:

* Hatchet - For chopping wood.

* Butchering Knife - Needed to reliably butcher animals

* Shovel - Used to bury dead corpses so animals respawn sooner. In emergencies, you can also use the flatten option to create ground to stand on when on steep hills and mountainsides.

* Carving Knife - For creating kindling, extra arrow shafts and emergency tools such as mallets (useful for building woven fences to climb out of places).

* Steel and Flint - Lighting signal fires, cooking meals, etc.

* Cotton & Healing covers - You will get hurt while hunting. It is important to carry strong healing covers with you incase you sustain a nasty wound. Hint: When trolls are butchered, their gland and tooth create a supreme healing cover of 20 strength.

* Satchel - Useful for storing animal parts and can also be used as an emergency bandage when you run out of cotton.

* Rope - Leading animals

* Water - If you hunting away from lakes and shores, sometimes you may struggle to find water sources to drink from. Always carry water with you in a waterskin or pottery jar

* Small Barrel with 2.50 water in it - It is believed that storing meat and meals inside a barrel of water helps to preserve it. For this reason alone, I recommend carrying a barrel with a small amount of water in it with you. In emergencies when you run out of water from your waterskin, you can drink the water in the barrel.

* Sailboat - The sailboat is the perfect boat for a hunter because you can easily lead your horses while sailing in it and it can sail reliably well in any wind condition.

Different hunts
Building pit traps - Very easy to set up and can be done anywhere but successfully trapping is very uncommon.

A common problem which was present in Wurm a while ago was animals spawning on mountain sides and refusing to come down. Rolf fixed this issue by modifying the creature AI slightly to encourage some creatures to make their way downhill whenever they spawn on steep terrain. Wolves, dogs, and bears will seek to travel downhill whenever possible.

To exploit this new AI, some players dig out small pits just for the purpose of trapping animals.

In my opinion, the best places to dig out such pits is at the lowest point in between two mountains. This creates a large bottleneck which funnels all the creatures from the mountainside down into this pit.

Steppe & Tundra Hunting - Easy to spot animals and little preparation required but very common amongst players.

Hunting in steppe and tundra terrain makes hunting very easy as you can easily spot creatures from extreme distances and determine early on whether the creature is too tough for you to handle or not.

One major problem with this method is that all steppes are frequently visited by other players and creatures are sometimes hunted out.

Forest Hunting - Many animals to hunt, little preparation required and somewhat uncommon amongst players but spotting animals and hidden dangers can be difficult.

In my personal opinion, the best hunting ground is within thick forests away from settlements. It is also very common to find older fat grazing animals in forests that have been undisturbed by players.

Pine forests are the best forests to hunt in because the pine trees are tall and thin, giving you good medium-long range visibility.

Forests also provide many resources necessary to create emergency shelters/camps, basic tools and weak healing covers.

Mountain-top Hunting - Often contains many old and starving creatures but is usually dangerous and difficult to reach and difficult to retreat from.

On some mountains across freedom, in particular Death Mountain on the south of the grand steppe, there are many decaying fence walls that other players have built to climb up to the top of the mountain. The journey to the top of the mountain is often dangerous and slipping off at a high elevation can almost mean certain death. It is also not uncommon to run into aged starving creatures who will almost always attack you from a higher position while you climb up the mountain.

The hunting on top of mountains is only ideal if you are planning on leveling your fight skill. There are always plenty of tougher creatures to kill on mountain tops but most will be starving.

Beware of hidden trolls on mountain tops.

Mountain valley Hunting (Natural pit traps) - Contains many creatures (mostly diseased and starving) and sometimes treasure from death piles but can be dangerous, difficult to reach and escape from.

Beware of death pits.

Inside mountain ranges, there are often valleys that funnel creatures into a tight space bunching them up close together. The valleys that you can't climb out of are called death pits because players fall into them, get ganged up on by a mass of creatures and die.

If you can safely reach the bottom of such valleys then the hunting and skill-gain is often very good as you can slowly lure piles of creatures slowly towards you and finish them off slowly one by one.

Mongol recommended hunting grounds
Steve's Tundra and the surrounding forests - This entire area is completely overrun by trolls. It is very common to run into champion trolls out here as there are many spawners and few players nearby. In the forests, you will find even more trolls as well as scorpions, lava spiders, bears, wolves and huge spiders.

The Eastern Plains - The Eastern Plains is the only true steppe hunting ground that hasn't been seriously affected by human settlement. Although the hunting here is quite common, on a good day you can expect to run into masses of crocodiles and trolls on the steppe and lava spiders along the eastern forest.

The mountain North-West of the Grand Steppe - This enormous mountain is home to a variety of different creatures lurking within the pine forests. On the Grand Steppe side, there are trolls and spiders which roam the mountain side. On the North side near Hermit's Heaven, there are many angry scorpions and goblins. It is also very common to find deers on this mountain.

The South-East quadrant of Freedom particularly around Elysian Bay - This surrounding area has many different environments ranging from steppe to forests to lakes but the entire area is mostly rolling hills and mountains which is ideal for naturally trapping many creatures. Although I'm not very familiar with the area, I have come across all types of creatures especially wolves, bears and trolls.

The North-East Islands - For anyone who has a boat and wants to go hunting, the islands in the north east provide an excellent opportunity to sight-see and kill. The southern island is predominantly steppe making it ideal for spotting creatures. On the south island you will find mostly lower level creatures such as Goblins and wildcats. The northern island contains many raging crocodiles on the south west end and spiders, goblins and bears everywhere else. Greenish wildcats have also been spotted here.

Mypoppy:

Building A Team
Wurm is a huge game.

You need carpentry, and cooking and smithing as a bare minimum at the start.
Later you need even more skills.

Working in a group makes a huge difference.
Other players can help you do almost everything faster and can help you do things you cant achieve alone just because you dont have the time to learn the skill.

Villages
Village owners can be very fussy.

Dont get me wrong, there are many village Mayors that are happy to welcome anyone that wants to join. But there are also many mayors that dont want the frustration of one person after another joining and then leaving without warning.

If you can get into a village that is accepting people then try not to let them down by just disappearing. If you have to leave the game then at least be polite and let them know.

Most recruiting villages dont care about specific skill levels, they just want people who will stick around and are happy to fit in, do their own thing and enjoy the game.

Teams
As a new player, the best thing you have going for you is the chance to work with someone else - and there are other new players starting the game every day.

Ask in Local chat (especially near the Howl) if anyone wants to join up with you.
Dont be shy of joining up with someone else if they are asking for someone to work with them.

It is a reality in Wurm that 2 players can achieve 4 times as much in the same amount of time, 3 players can achieve 9 times as much. And so on.

With just one other person to work with, you will get that first building up in half the time. One person can smith while the other makes planks, etc.
It is possible to be a Jack of all trades but it takes a huge amount of extra time. Get help if you can.

That said, be wary of the player that really just wants to swan around admiring the landscape and letting you do all the work.
To try to avoid that, get three or four people to work with you rather than just one. That way if someone does not pull their weight you wont care so much because the others do.

Basic Organisation
Even if your team does not have or intend to buy a deed, elect a mayor or leader who is likely to stick around. Pick someone who cares about people and will pass on any writs if they think they wont be online for a while.

Always make a building for everyone to share before making any private houses. That way everyone has a home base at the same time. Build that house with at least 2 tiles of growing space around it. You can then expand to 2x2 and then 3x3 and have a central storage area.

Plan out what you are going to do in your space as a team and make sure everyone has the general idea.
You dont need a detailed map of what you want to build, though its nice to have one if someone wants to make one.

Make sure everyone sticks to the general plan. One person deciding to change what you all agreed on can waste hours of time.

Help each other make their own house. Usually its best to help by making planks and nails and letting them do as much as possible of the actual building themselves. That way everyone gets some good carpentry skill (always useful to have more than one person with basic carpentry skill).

When there is an important joint goal to achieve, everyone should pitch in and help.
Initial QL is not usually vital for goals shared by a group of players when it is something they need as a group.

Skilled Team Members
This is a bit arbitrary but it is what I have found works okay ..

* Cook/Farmer/Fisher: This person is vital. Good food makes a huge difference. At the same time, this does not always take a lot of time, so this person often does something else as well.
* Hunter/Weaponsmith: This person will be your primary killer of dangerous beasts (though its also great if more than one of you can fight). Hunters will provide additional food and probably make the bows and other weapons that you use. Hunting is time consuming but this is still mostly a part time job.
* Combining the above two roles makes one person your food provider, butcher and cloth/leather tailor. Making handheld weapons or bows could be passed on to the Blacksmith or Carpenter if necessary.
* Blacksmith/Miner: A good Blacksmith saves loads of time and is an essential part of any group. One of you should focus on doing this by making most of the nails, anvils and metal tools. Better tools equals faster progress in all areas of Wurm.
* Carpenter: This person will focus on more difficult Carpentry and Fine Carpentry. They will imp spindles, mallets and fishing rods, make beds, small barrels and large barrels and may also end up being be your Cloth Tailor. Carpentry skillgain, just by creating things, is pretty high so this team member can often do another skill. The Carpenter will usually also end up being the Mason who makes walls, forges, ovens and stone buildings.

Dont push any team member into following just one skill. It can get boring. If you need nails and the Blacksmith (or whoever) wants to go hunting then let them go have some fun and you make your own nails.

Dont box anyone into being any of the above. It should always be a matter of choice who does what as long as they are willing to pitch in and help the team.
Some people will really just want to learn a bit of everything. Thats great if they will do a bit of everything for all of you.
Sometimes you all want to do a bit of everything. That works fine as long as you help each other.
Introduction
Wurm currently has three types of server: Tutorial, Freedom (consisting of Independence, Deliverance, and Exodus) and Wild. A fourth type called 'Epic' (scenario lands) is planned. Currently not much information is known about the Epic server type as it's still in the planning and development phase. There is also a login server and a test server (which can be accessed via the wiki - see the link bar at the top left).

Server type summary
Server type details
Tutorial server
The Tutorial server (Golden Valley) is where all new accounts are created. The aim of the Tutorial server is to introduce the player to the game mechanics. Players may then move on from the Tutorial server to other server types using portals. Premium must be purchased to be able to move to the Wild server. Premium time has no effect till the player leaves the server - the Tutorial server only allows basic accounts, so skills are limited to a maximum of 20. This means resource quality is also limited to 20. There are also no gods or altars present on the Tutorial server.

The tutorial was built on the Golden Valley server. New players are spawned in the tutorial area and cannot leave other than through the portals to the Wild and Freedom servers. However accounts that were active before the tutorial was created are currently able to stay outside the tutorial area. These accounts are able to transfer to the other servers, but some have chosen to remain. PvP, theft, deeds, and guard towers are not allowed on the Tutorial server.

Freedom servers
Fully owned by the native kingdom. The entire server is automatically claimed as kingdom territory, so guard towers are not required to plant deeds.
Theft, PvP, and other kinds of grieving are frowned upon, and are bannable offenses in many instances. GMs will police these servers as needed, but ideally the game rules should take care of things automatically. Moderators police the kingdom chat channels to ensure the chat rules are followed.

A second Freedom server named Deliverance has been released, the server can be accessed through a portal at the end of the Tutorial or by sailing across the South border of Independence.

A third Freedom server named Exodus has been released, the server can be accessed through a portal at the end of the Tutorial or by sailing across the South border of Deliverance.

See the Freedom FAQ for more details.

Wild servers
Wild servers are battlegrounds where different kingdoms clash together. There is no pre-owned land, it must be claimed by constructing guard towers. Deeds can only be placed within the territories claimed by the towers.
Full PvP is enabled between kingdoms, as well as internally within your own kingdom. The white light and black light are found on the wild server. Each kingdom on wild has a leader and offices granted to players by the leader.
GMs generally avoid intervening in wild server affairs. However, excessive griefing and other violations of the game rules will be punished as appropriate. On wild servers monsters are tougher and the terrain is harsher. [citation needed]

Epic servers
Currently not much information is know about this server type as its still in the planning and implementation phase. Epic servers will run scenarios that form the story. A scenario will have permanent impact on the world and the success is dependent on the players.

Inter-server travel
It is possible to travel between the Wild and Freedom servers via portals at all of the capital deeds: Samling and Freedom Market on Freedom; the Landing, the Shroud and the Gold Coast on Wild. The only items you can take with you when changing servers are coins, nodrop items (e.g. spyglasses, bags of keeping) and the starter tool kit. Additionally, fighting and archery skills are subject to a 5% penalty when crossing if either is above 50, meaning a 70 skill fighter will end up with 66.5 fighting upon arriving.

Travel from the Tutorial server is one-way only. Only premium characters can transfer to Wild. All characters can transfer to Freedom. Once you are on another server you may not go back to the Tutorial server, unless you start a new character.

You can travel between the two Freedom servers via boat. Sailing through the South border of Independence will place you in the North of Deliverance, and similarly sailing through the North border of Deliverance will place you in the South of Independence.

Test servers
The test servers exists to test large game updates before they are added to the main servers. There is currently only one test server.

Gunner, the avid explorer, didn't wait for NT to be built before he set out on his explorations. He went west of Newtown, with Edrick and settled down east of The Woodland Realm, before it was constructed. Ironically, Edmazur, whose skills are much higher than Gunner's, was a newbie at the time, and was saved by Gunner from a few scorpions. After a few weeks of bliss in the wilderness, he ventured with Bludragon to found Dragon's Point, currently located east of Lorwyn's Ridge.

The arrival of the persistent LordTemplar, through his constant inquiring as to when he'd return to the region he'd settled down with Edrick at, he finally moved back. He helped Lordtemplar construct his first abbey, and then built a cliffside mansion, overlooking a small valley between the Bearback Mountain range and Curtain Highway.

LordTemplar, soon a few weeks after the completion of his mansion, moved to Saint Minas with his friend, Maniah. They soon convinced him to move down to Saint Minas, over an hour long walk from Newtown. After a month's mediocre stay at Saint Minas, they left after the outrages and blatant overuse of the KOS power, and following them most of the effective working force of Saint Minas. With Agrue, Raoth and Lordtemplar, they moved to Wild and converted to the Horde of the Summoned.

After a disappointing two week stay in wild, and a brief vacation of Wurm, he returned with Lordtemplar to home, arriving at the desolated, abandoned island of Saint Minas. He claimed Mypoppy's former fort and made it his own. Soon, through the combined resources of Agrue, Blippy, Lordtemplar, Odul, Bernhardo and himself, Gunner and Lordtemplar founded Azarad's Hold, located on the island west of Former Saint Minas, or better known to him as "West Island".

About the Village
Tuscany Pointe was brought alive again through the efforts of Ivansimconia and Mypoppy, currently located NW of the map. Surronded by a lake, Steppe, Lava, Clay, and plenty of woods; Tuscany Pointe is truly an ideal hunting spot. And with the closeness to the ocean and wild transportation and travel is a huge upside with boats planning to be released.

Known excessive creatures
* Large amounts on Crocodiles
* Scorpions in about every abandoned cave you approach
* Angry huge spiders literally everywhere
* Currently an overpopulation of deers

----

Buildings
On deed there are only two buildings; A house and a Gatehouse. But with the option to create your own place through using an alliance homestead with the support of Ivan and Mypoppy, players are allowed to experience freedom in their own way. We only ask that the name include "Tuscany" and is in a relative closeness to Tuscany Pointe.

----

Resources
Plenty of clay to go around, on the lake that surronds Tuscany Pointe there are about three clay patches waiting to be dug up by hopefull new arrivals. We currently have silver and iron veins, with the current exploration for more, it should increase soon.

Lava? Where? With two lava patches close to Tuscany Pointe it adds an exciting feel as you can stand from anywhere in the lake and see the lava field right above Tuscany Pointe.
