Raw meat and raw fish, filleted or not, stay on the large barrel near the oven. Only meat and fish is supposed to be on this barrel. Inside the barrel, here's is how they are put, and why:

* QL between 30 and 50: inside the "meat ql30+" bowl. This is mainly used for cooking.
* QL between 15 and 20: inside the "meat ql15+" bowl. Used to practice cooking skill (use meat with the same QL as your skill).
Herbs and foraged items
It is common for herbs to have some healing use, so first check their healing power using the "What's this?" game description.

Herbs, foraged items and some butchered goods that have healing power (such as paw, tooth, bladder, eye), all go on the healing large barrel by the door. There is a bowl for each power (if there isn't, please get an empty bowl and name it). So "heal pwr#" for the healing ingredients and "herbs" for non-healing ingredients. You can use healing power 1 for cooking, but try to save the other for covers. Never use a power 4 or 5 in cooking - it's a sin and you will be cursed for that: all your actions will fail and your skill will never increase again. Or so they say.

Herbs and foraged items that have no healing power go to the cooking ingredients large barrel by the oven. They have their own container there, labeled "herbs".

Butchered goods
Check if the item has healing power. If so, read "Herbs" above. Meat is also already described above. Fur go to the Tools Shed or, if you don't have access to it, drop in the kitchen floor and ask a citizen to take it there for you.

Rags and healing covers
These also go to the healing barrel, each one on its own small barrel inside.
Farmed goods
Pumpkins, corn, potato and seeds have their own container inside the cooking ingredients large barrel by the oven.
Description
Packed dirt is simply a dirt or grass tile that has been "packed".

Walk/Run speed on packed dirt is higher than on grass or dirt, but not as fast as gravel, cobblestone, or stone slab

This can be done by heavy traffic over a period of time, by livestock grazing the tile bare, or by "packing" it with a shovel.

A packed dirt tile can be paved with a rock shard to create a gravel tile.

A packed dirt tile can be paved with a stone brick to create a cobblestone tile.

A packed dirt tile can be paved with a slab to create stone slab tile.

Packed dirt can be "cultivated" into a dirt tile using a rake or shovel.

Packed dirt will eventually be overgrown by nearby grass or trees, but not as fast as dirt would be, so in effect "packing" the tile will slow the growth.

Rumor has it you can also convert mycelium into "packed dirt" with a shovel, although I have not done so myself.
Strength identification
The quality of a healing cover is of no consequence to the strength of the cover. To identify if it is weak or strong, one can examine it. One of these answers will be returned:

* A bunch of interwoven grass mixed with various healing ingredients. It will help some against wounds. (1-5)
* A bunch of interwoven grass mixed with various healing ingredients. It will pretty efficient against wounds. (6-8)
* A bunch of interwoven grass mixed with various healing ingredients. It will be good against wounds. (9-11)
* A bunch of interwoven grass mixed with various healing ingredients. It will be pretty good against wounds. (12-15)
* A bunch of interwoven grass mixed with various healing ingredients. It will be very good against wounds. (16-20)
* A bunch of interwoven grass mixed with various healing ingredients. It will be supreme against wounds. (20+)

Effectiveness
The effectiveness of a cover is the amount of points the healing cover will add to the base rate of natural healing, which is 5 each 20 minutes. It is determined by the substances used to make the covers.

It can be seen, once applied, while examining a wound. It will show as a number between parenthesis at the end of the wound description. Example:

* You see a small bruise at the lower back.
* It is covered with some healing plants (2).

Weak covers will have an effectiveness of 1 to 10 while strong covers will have an effectiveness of 10 or more.

Additional notes
* You cannot mix two items of the same type, you can however mix 2 different types of mushrooms.
* Butchered items can last for more than one creation.
The more you mix, the more it fades to gray.
Apparently the key color (in the data, blue) follows this rule: Result = avg(inputs) - 4, with some rounding in place.
The apparent rule for the non-key colors is Result = avg(inputs) + 3, again with rounding in place.

Non basic colors
We can get purple by mixing blue and red dye. What if we mix two purple dyes? If the highest color component is considered the key color and the others non-key, it will tend to balance the two high components (blue and red) with a slower fade to gray while raising the non-key color to gray level with the normal speed.
: It's more likely that any color average after mixing that is above 155 gets the -4 penalty and any color average below 155 gets the +3 bonus.

Parsifal: /* Water */ Changed bucket to waterskin.

Game basics.

Fundamental needs
In Wurm you do not need anything. You can have 0% food, 0% water, 0% stamina, die repeatedly, yet your character will still be cruising along the game. However, it will not be an enjoyable experience.

Water
The less water your character has (i.e. the more thirsty), the slower your stamina recovers. At full water, full recovery takes a few seconds. With no water, it takes several minutes. It is strongly recommended to always have at least 80% water.

* Keep a water bottle on you. A pottery jar works while starting out, but a couple waterskins have a smaller weight overhead.
* Keep a stable water source. If you don't live near water, build a large barrel or fountain and refill periodically. Avoid containers that can be picked up, they are easily stolen. A small cart and half a dozen small barrels make for effective refilling trips.

Food
Hunger affects your character much like thirst, but with a lower threshold. Below 30% food, stamina recovery begins to slow down. Below 7.5% food, your character can no longer perform strenuous tasks. It is strongly recommended to always have at least 30% food.

* If meals are available, you have a large enough margin that eating can be done when convenient, unless you wish to keep the 'full' status (85% or more food).
* If you depend on casseroles and other food that only takes you to 40% food max, keep food on you. The drop from 40% to 30% happens fast enough that you don't want to take breaks every time.

Feeding yourself is a major task when just starting out. Obtaining ingredients for the food is difficult, and the food you cook is ineffective. It is highly recommended to obtain food from someone else while you're still trying to get established. However, you should still aim to be able to support yourself quickly.

* The effectiveness of the food you cook is how much hunger is replenished per bite. It depends on the QL, which is mainly based on your hot-food cooking skill at the lower levels. Easy dishes get a boost in QL which can partially make up for lower skill.
* To raise your skill, cook small and easy dishes in bulk. The difficulty of a dish can be seen by examining the container. Note that cooking in a campfire or forge raises the difficulty; use an oven when possible.
* Soup and stew are good basic recipes, then moving on to casseroles. Meals get no QL boost, so cooking them is generally a waste of resources until you have at least 20 skill.
* The bulk of the food you cook decides how many bites the dish supports. This is based simply on the weight of the ingredients.
* There are three main ways to ensure a stable supply of foodstuffs: hunting, fishing, and farming. Deed guards will automatically "hunt" agressive animals that enter your deed, saving you time and effort.
* Foraging and botanizing are highly ineffective and should be avoided for bulk purposes.

Stamina
Stamina is the end-all, be-all of the game. Less than full stamina slows down almost every action you perform. If stamina drops below 2.5%, your movement is slowed to a crawl.

* Stamina recovery is primarily affected by hunger and thirst. Keep your food and water levels high.
* Build a house with a bed. While the sleep bonus is slow to accumulate (1 hour per day), it triples your stamina recovery while active. It also doubles your skillgain.

Health
While not a big concern in itself, unless your wounds are severe, having less than full health will limit your maximum stamina as well. It is therefore recommended to keep your health full at all times.

* Keep a cotton field or two to ensure a stable supply of bandages. Raw cotton can be used, but it is more effective to spin it into string of cloth and rags.
* For severe wounds, bandaging may not be enough. Keep some healing covers for special cases. The best covers typically require botanizing and butchering to obtain the components. Mushroom hunting is also an option for the adventurous.

Encumbrance
While you can get away with carrying everything you own in the beginning, it will quickly start to slow you down. The bank will only store five items, so can not be dependend on.

* At 2x your body strength in weight, you will slow down to 3/4 of your normal speed
* At 3.5x, speed drops to 1/4
* At 7x, speed drops to 1/20, and you cannot carry more

Other basics
While the points above ensure your character can function effectively, there's more to the game than just moving around and staying alive. If you choose to strike out on your own rather than settle with a village, there are many things to consider.

* A house with a bed, as mentioned before.
* Establishing a farm, fenced in if not on a deed.
* Supplies of iron, rock shards and clay.
* A forge and an oven.
* Basic tools, e.g. butchering knife, fishing rod, and more.
* Storage for items you don't carry on you: locks for your house and chests

Parsifal: /* Current */ Subsidy commentary.

Random reflection. Note that most ideas are purely theoretical and would probably be detrimental to both the game and the developers' income.

There is no purpose to this, just seeing where my thoughts take me. Also, I'm not an economist, so don't take terminology at face value.

Minimal interaction
* In: From store, to anyone
* Out: Special purchases (deeds)
* Out: Upkeep
* Out: Sacrificing money
* Out: Dead money on inactive accounts

Possible result: People use existing silver to pay upkeep. As the amount of money in the game decreases, deflation kicks in. The more deflation, the more valuable bought silver becomes. Might reach a temporary balance at some point, but can easily be disrupted again.

Current
* In: From store, to anyone
* In: From king, to size 10 villages
* Out: Special purchases (deeds)
* Out: Upkeep
* Out: Sacrificing money
* Out: Dead money on inactive accounts

Two main differences from the minimal system. The first is that much (or most) of the money that goes out is returned to the game through the king. This reduces the need for bought silver to keep the currency stable.

The second is that this money is granted to size 10 villages. Anyone who buys and pays upkeep for a homestead or size 5 village is essentially subsidizing the larger villages. The subsidy might be on purpose, so that people pay for the more expensive and higher upkeep size 10 villages. Of course, this also makes it more likely that people gather in villages, which might increase player trade through specialization - but that is just a conjecture as lots of social factors kick in.

Possibilities
A radical option is to separate the silver from the real world completely. Deeds and upkeep would only be payable in euros, silver would not be sold, money sacrifice would be prevented. End result: the in-game wealth would be completely static. It is likely that eventually most of the wealth would be gathered by a small group of players.

The above, with the ability to buy silver. This counteracts hoarding in two ways. First, it provides a source of money that cannot be monopolized. Second, inflation is now inevitable, making hoarded money less valuable. The latter effect would be augmented if the inflation was taken into account by the silver sales, leading to more silver per euro over time.

The above, with taxes. Rather than increase the amount of currency in circulation, every time someone buys silver the rest of the game is taxed to balance the total wealth.

The above, but with optional taxes. Instead of a forced instant tax, provide money sinks players are likely to voluntarily spend money on. Requires careful balancing of the sinks. Too attractive sinks lead to dominance of bought currency. Not attractive enough sinks don't have the required balancing effect.

Note that the minimal system is essentially the above.

To improve a forge, you must first right click, and examine the |forge. In the Event window you will see what you need to work on the forge to improve its quality.

In all cases it will either require a stone chisel to chip away irregularities or rock shards.
The WurmPedia is a wiki about Wurm Online. Anyone with a registered wiki account can edit the wiki. The wiki currently has NUMBEROFARTICLES articles, and more being added all the time! Why not write one yourself or begin reading?
Wurm Online is down until the 10th of May 2007 at about 18:00 CEST (Swedish Time)! This is because both of the home server's hard disks malfunctioned and the backup is too old to restore. The wild server cannot be logged in to, due to account information being stored on the home server. The will be a complete reset, but silver coins bought from the shop will be refunded, as will any remaining premium time. Do not login as it will disrupt Rolf's and Notch's work.
