Just a little thing I'm working on with some baselines on Tactical (or less than 12 members) fighting. In an offense/defense format, if you want to use these I strongly recommend that you try adapting it to the area where you live so it'll work best for you! --Raichiotto 14:41, 26 September 2007 (CDT)

Battles
The basics of a battle on open ground are very simple: Two sides agree to meet on a field agreed to by both sets of leaders and you attempt to pound the other team into submission. But belive it or not, there are quite a few ideas you can use in a fight to gain an advantage. I'll list a few here

Offense
In an offense-type battleplan, you will most likely want to focus on knocking your opponent off-balance. Since most likely you will not be restricted to defending a certain position, you can devote all your time to the attack.

What you will need to watch out for when you make your move is your opponent not only anticipating your move. But also making a maneuver in an attempt to flank you, while you can never be physically "pinned down" in Wurm combat. It does create a very annyoing (if not lethal) distraction.

Defense
If, for some reason. You find yourself back on your heels, all is not lost. But what you will need is time, time to regroup, time to think, time to act. All of which is in very short supply in a defensive battle. Now the most surefire thing that'll get you out of a jam like this is a Tactical Retreat.

Reason it's called that is while you are running away from the enemy, you will also be looking for an opportunity to turn around and smash your sword into the first bad guy you see. This will vary from battlefield to battlefield, but usually if the enemy hasn't managed to completely pin you down. You can excecute it...

Raids
Now there are a few definitions of what a raid is and what you're supposed to do on it. But here is what the big Wikipedia says on it:

A raid is a military tactic whereby a sudden attack is effected by a small group behind enemy lines. A raiding group may comprise of personnel specially trained in this tactic (such as commandos or guerilla fighters), regular soldiers, or any organized group of combatants. Raids have a specific purpose and are not normally intended to capture and hold terrain, but instead finish with the raiding force quickly retreating to a previous defended position prior to the enemy forces being able to respond in a co-ordinated manner or formulate a counterattack.

The purposes of a raid may include:

to demoralize, confuse, or exhaust an enemy
to ransack or pillage a location
to obtain property or capture people
to destroy goods or other things with an economic value
to free POWs
to kill or capture specific people
to gather intelligence.

Now for practical purposes, we will limit our discussion to the two options easiest to do in Wurm: Obtain Property & Confuse the Enemy.

Offense
Sieges
Giggle Fights
Technically Rolling Hills fell and was drained, we didn't make it to the main deed through the caves as it didn't look like an option.
Focussing on that entrance would have cut off our escape route as the heavy guards would have respawned behind us, ensuring defeat.
BL troops retreated to the beach to open an alternate entrance to the caves, plan that failed since the cave network had been reinforced.
I left battle at that point, someone fill me with the details from there.

--Azzu 04:50, 29 January 2007 (CST)

+1 to that. The defenses of Rolling Hills were broken, that houses were broken into, and the coffers were drained. That hardly sounds like successful defense.

All the "defenders" were killed at least once. We cannot stop them from respawning.

You may call this a JK victory if you like, but it does you no justice.

--Benjo 03:38, 29 January 2007 (CST)

As I saw it, the Rolling Hills deed is just a gatehouse to the main deed. There was nothing of real value there. Yea, you smashed the gatehouse, but didn't get onto the deed because you would have become trapped. Whether is was clever village design or our swords that prevented you from getting on deed, you didn't succeed in raiding Merkanamost. I really don't care what this article says, but I figured I'll throw in my 2 cents.

Jbobj 18:23, 29 January 2007 (CST)

The article is titled "Siege of 'Rolling Hills'". Rolling hills was raped. The wiki should be filled with accurate articles, not half-arsed ones trying to make the WL look powerful.

--Benjo 19:40, 29 January 2007 (CST)

:The Article was moved to Siege of Merkamanost because its obvious that Rolling Hills was not the target. The Battles section of the wiki is quite small. I hear that Merk was flattened twice before, why don't you create articles about them, then it would not seem so one-sided. Also, If you do not think if it should be called a Jenn-Kellon Victory, I would like to hear your suggestion about what to call it. Participating in finding a solution is better then complaining about it. Jbobj 20:28, 29 January 2007 (CST)

The primary reason why there are no articles about the previous raid on Merk, is simply the fact that there were NO players from the village online to defend the village. Meaning there could be no accurate counterpoint to any BL accounts of the attack.

About the Battlename: The main reason I called it the Seige of Rolling Hills is the fact that the name of the battle must reflect as accurately as possible what occured there. Sure you killed everyone once (except me, but I had to log due to lightning storm in RL), but they STILL managed to run you out of the caves and off the property.

Second, if RH was to have been "raped" as one of you put it. I'd be expecting a flat pad to be sitting where RH was, and the cave complex to be completly ruined. You did neither, and even if you tried to do so. The 2nd wave of defenders still would've overwhelmed your party and run you off. So I belive a Seige term would be most accurate in terms of what occured that night. --Raichiotto 14:07, 30 January 2007 (CST)

Introduction
Wurm Online will have two types of server; Home and Wild. There will be two subtypes of Home servers; the Kingdom of Jenn-Kellon Home Servers and the Kingdom of Mol-Rehan Home Servers. Initially there may only be one Jenn-Kellon Home Server and one Wild Server. Other servers may be added in the future. Home Servers are much safer than Wild Servers; in terms of PvP.

Server Type Details
Home Server
*These are fully owned by either Jenn-Kellon or Mol Rehan. Nobody else can build towns there, and (if it's needed) get penalties for even being on the server.

*You can found a village or homestead anywhere on a Home Server as the land is already claimed by one of the Kingdoms.

*Theft and so forth is frowned upon a lot, and if you cause too much commotion, you could be kicked out of the kingdom.

*GMs will police these servers fairly close as needed, but ideally the game rules should take care of things automatically.

*These, both to make up for the extra protection, and to encourage people to visit the wild servers, have a cap on ore [50 [QL]].

*Home servers are protected against players of opposing kingdoms, and against pvp in general.(Protected, not immune.)

Wild Server
*No QL caps, and no pre-owned land. To claim land for your kingdom, you have to build towers.

*You can only start villages or homesteads on land that has been claimed for your kingdom, using Guard Towers.

*Full PvP is enabled. Minimal GM interaction (except for things that are against the game rules, such as cheating.)

*The white and black lights will both be on wild servers only, but we might make it possible to build temples that work like mini-lights.

*Most 'cool' game events will take place on wild servers.

*Tougher monsters only on wild.

*Rougher terrain on wild.

*HOTS players on wild only.

Miscellaneous Details
Items will decay at the same rate on home and wild servers.

It is not possible to chat between servers. So you can only talk to players (one-2-one, kingdom chat, and village chat) on the same server. There will be some sort of messaging system but that has not been developed yet.

Additional quotes from Notch:
I see no reason to apply the cap to anything other than ore. However, we might add some resources that are only available on wild servers, and some that are only available on home server in the future. Actually, some might even be unique to a single server, to encourage trading

Clearing up
Can someone clear this up please? I just put some Info on there, but im not good at doing all the fancy stuff everyone else does, so i'll just ask nicely and hope someone wants to.

Oh, plus it was a HoTS victory, not sure why someone wrote JK victory heh.

Counter Point
I wrote it down as a WL victory on the basis of did the BLers achieve their
main objective (destroying the White Light), the anwser would be a no, since
the WL was still standing after the fight.

For a historical comparison, take a look at the Vietnam War, while the United
States won every straight up military battle. They ultimately did not have the
support of the people back home, this was caused by several political objectives
achieved by the NVA (North Vietnam) & the Vietcong (South Vietnam rebels).

Its a bit of a long story but I think you understand where I am coming from on
it. --- Raichiotto

I see.
Hmm.. Yeah, i guess i understand.

Still, halfway through, we found even with ~3 Champions and a couple of Artifacts it was near-impossible to destory the WL, so we killed all the WLers, making their presence useless, and we could have carried on with the desecrating if we wanted, so really, The BLers beat the WLers, and the Devs beat the BLers, by making the WL too damn hard to destory =P

- Pauven

A Suggestion
In that case, may I make the suggestion that the battle be called a tie?

Since the BLers didn't destroy the WL, but wiped out all of the defenders.
nobody really achieved what they set out to do. Thus the two missions were
offset by each other. -- Rai

Story
While the Archives lack any specific details of this battle. What is known
is the Horde of the Summoned was led by Malvada, who supposedly was appointed
to the post by none other than Libila herself. The objective was simple: Take
the infamous Orb of Doom to the Altar of Three and destroy it. Rendering the
forces of Jenn-Kellon effectively useless without their beloved White Light.

Now the records do not say as to how or why the plan was discovered. But a
defense force was quickly rallied up and camped a mere half-kilometer from
the White Light. When the Horde discovered that the element of surprise was
gone, they attacked with a fury not seen for many a starfall. The battle could
be easily compared with the Battle of Armageddon that so many beliefs refer to
in their texts.

But for some reason unknown now, the Jenn-Kellon army was able to beat back
the rampaging Hordes and claimed victory. However, it isn't known of what became
of the Orb of Doom. Either it stills lies somewhere buried under the blood of
many a fighter. Or worse, could've been spirited away to await perhaps the fabled
Armageddon War that may be yet to come....

Review
This battle is one of those types which strangely parallels real-life, and whose focus changes many times in the midst of the fight.

The initial plan by the BLers was to take out the White Light by using a Superweapon. While this is risky, success would mean total domination over the WLers and possibly even the whole world.

Its hard to figure out how the WLers learned of the attack, but once they did they lept into action. First they planted a Homstead about 500m from the White Light (a rule of Wurm is no deeds shall be planted on the Lights themselves), this did two things: One it shifted the focus of the battle to the deed, and it forced the BLers into having to attack the deed because it acted like a castle. It could not be ignored.

Once the deed was there. It spawned guards which gave the WLers much needed defenders and freed up fighters to repeal the attackers. After a while the BLers gave up and left, which gave the victory to the defenders.

(save point)

Above is... Not accurate.. I'll re-write, but i shall leave the above up for people to see.. seeing as some people might actualy beliveve that.

The initial plan by the BLers was to take out the White Light by using a Superweapon. While this is risky, success would mean the storyline would move forward.

Once Malvada advertised the attack, the WLers ran towards the WL. First they planted a Homestead about 500m from the White Light (a rule of Wurm is no deeds shall be planted on the Lights themselves), this did three things: One it shifted the focus of the battle to the deed, and it forced the BLers into having to attack the deed because it acted like a castle. It could not be ignored, and lastly, gave the WLers an unfair advantage as they already outnumbered the BLers, but now they could respawn when they died, as thier towns were allied with this deed.

Once the deed was there, it spawned guards which gave the WLers even more of an advantage and spawned fighters to annoy the attackers. After a while the BLers broke onto the deed, drained it, killed everyone and took the final lives from Champions, leaving the BLers to skip merrily back to their land, while being pursued by the last Champion, who wanted a 1 on 1 fight with Malvada. Malvada won, which finalised the victory for the BLers.
Please Edit this
Feel free to delete this once you have stripped all the Info from it, it is from a BLers point of view.

Ok, im(Pauven) just writing this up quickly.

I was at the battle, it was the biggest battle i'd ever been in on Wurm. I was fighting for the BLers. If i remember correctly, Malvada started the battle, and she posted the time on the Forums, for the WLers to see too.

Towns there for the BLers include:
Valley Of Cursed Souls (VCS)
Libilian Outlaws (LO)
LO Funky Town (FT)
Libilias Rebels (LR)

Most of the fighters were from VCS, LO, and FT had a few each, and only i was there for LR.

The battle saw many Champions fall, most of, if not all, WL ones.

Battle Summary:

Most of us met at VCS, and went past NT towards the Light. Once we got in 150 tiles distance from the WL, they started popping up in Local.

It was established after 5 mins that the WLers were using JK chat as a battle chat, so we couldnt hear what they were saying.

We got to the valley of the WL, and looking to our right, we saw their deed.

We turned and ran to the edge of it, and started planning our battle. It was daylight, no fog, so the visibility was good.

I was staying near the back of the group of BLers, while we hunted down the WLers that werent on the deed.

I sent my pet Hyena to deal with a couple WLers who came out of the deed, and they quickly fell with most of us attacking, and respawned seconds later on the deed, where they picked up some fresh weapons.

I started being targetted by one of them and was accused of being the weakest there. I was far from it =P.

We stayed near the deed for a while, killing whoever came out, and watching them respawn. When they died, we stripped their corpses of weapons, so they would be running low soon. Before long i had some decent weapons and a studded jacket, as i came with a couple of stolen swords and no armor.

We decided to head towards the WL, as they werent stopping us. They had foolishly tried to wall it in, but there were a few small holes not yet completed that we went into and guarded. Nobody could get in, and when they were coming, they were dieing.

After a while of trying to desicrate, we found it was no good, and the Altar wasnt getting much damage.

We pushed back to their deed, in the hopes of destroying it.

Once we got there, most of their champions had already fallen, though we were still slightly outnumbered, and had had far fewer deaths. As we saw there deed, there were some GMs happily flying around it, and lighting fires to make it lighter there, which was to both of our advantages, but i guess we took advantage more than the WLers, as we knew where there deed started, and were able to hide in the dark.

Before long, i had been taken down to 75% health by the WLer who was targetting me, who happened to be a Champion who was now experencing Permadeath, and a random WLer who was shooting war arrows everywhere.

When all their Champions were down, and they were running out of weapons, we pressed onto the deed, their heavy guards came running out, and we lost more people, but we managed to defeat the guards, i dont know what happened after this, as i was unarmored and targetted by a guard who had just killed someone, and was down within seconds with eye hits.

When i made it back to the deed, we had looted it, and i got my stuff back from a kind Fusspawn i think.

I stayed back to look for anything they missed, then two WLers spawned and looked at me so i caught up with the rest.

We won, but we didnt do the WL like we planned, but we took all of their items that had any worth, and killed pretty much everyone that didnt run away or suicide.

Story
The attacking Jenn-Kellon force consisted of players from many towns from both the Wild and Home server. They gathered at the White Light. It took a long period of time to gather their forces, so Syphilis and their allies at Dark Citadel had plenty of time to prepare. The leaders of the raid, Sye and Maul, lead them to Syphilis, but were slowed down by problems on the way.

Once the army reached the town, they built a catapult to lay siege to the town's only entrance. After realizing the catapult was not doing much damage, the army attacked the gatehouse directly. The Blacklighters started suicidal hit and run attacks, forcing some of the attack force to heal. The first wall of the gatehouse soon fell and the attackers proceeded to the second wall. About this time, Xplict and Serph decided to unlock the gatehouse. When the doors opened, both the Whitelight leaders charged inside the town and the door was relocked. Both Sye and Maul were quickly killed while the rest of the army was still at the gate.

After the second wall was broken through, the rest of the army entered the outer edge of Syphilis. With some help from some guards, the Blacklighters were able to push the rest of the attackers out of the town. While some Whitelighters stayed to fight, others started to run. Some that escaped the counter-attack, died from wild beasts before they got home.
Review
This is a prime example of how a Siege Battleplan can go horribly wrong. The first mistake the WLers did was to gather a large force at an obvious rally point, the White Light. Now while its generally a good idea to go to such a place, this also makes it easier for the enemy to observe such activities. And gives them a pretty accurate number of soldiers that you are bringing.

The second error was bringing the entire force as one group, you NEVER want to do this in an actual battle. The primary reason being that the larger the force is, the slower it must go to stay together. In this case, the WLers had at least 25 soldiers in the army. To correct this error, the attackers would need to divide the army into 5 groups of 5 (not counting pets), with the co-commanders each leading two groups with the 5th group supporting the main army. This also opens up a few other battleplans to try out if the opportunity arises.

Now I can't blame them for trying. But the third mistake was building the catapult, currently in Wurm catapults are not very effective in doing damage. What can be done instead is the Support group builds a small fort near the battlezone to give the attackers a safer place to rest and heal.

The fouth mistake is the leaders falling for the trap Xplict and Serph deployed to lure them into the compound. Its never a good idea for a leader to charge in blindly, much less both of them. If one of the main leaders goes down in the battle, the army's morale takes a severe blow that is very hard to recover from.

In summary: This battle could've been a legendary victory had it not been for a few rookie mistakes in the leadership and a dip in morale mid-fight.
