SomebodyX: Added details about bridges inside CAVES

A bridge allows for the connection of two land-masses, or even between a house and land or even house to house. A bridge, once complete, will act like any standard terrain, allowing for the crossing of animals, players and land vehicles. A bridge can also be made inside caves and can also be paved (Excluding rope bridges or wooden bridges)

Survey
Survey will give you information on where the other character is standing regarding distance, direction and height difference.

To survey for a bridge two characters are needed. One character must carry a range pole, the other a dioptra. The lowest quality of the two items determines how long a bridge is that you can survey.'

The character with the range pole does not have to do much besides holding the range pole. To do this activate the range pole, click the ground and select Hold from the menu. When the action timer starts face the character with the dioptra.

The character with the dioptra will do the actual survey. Activate the dioptra, right click the player holding the range pole and select Survey from the menu.

The planning process will print messages in the event log

You carefully place the dioptra on its tripod in front of you.
You make sure the dioptra is level.
You point the dioptra at <other player>.
You line up the dioptra with <other player>.
You read the graduations on the range pole and work out the height difference.
<other player> is <x> tiles <direction> of you. Also you appear to be <x> dirt higher than <other player>.
You stop surveying.
You pack up the dioptra.

Building
To plan a bridge two characters are needed. One character must carry a range pole, the other a dioptra.

The character with the range pole does not have to do much besides holding the range pole. To do this activate the range pole, click the ground and select Hold from the menu. When the action timer starts face the character with the dioptra.

The character with the dioptra will do the actuall bridge planning. Activate the dioptra, right click the player holding the range pole and select Plan bridge from the menu. Standing right in front of the other character will create a 1 tile wide bridge. Standing at an offset will create bridges multiple tiles wide.

The planning process will print messages in the event log

You carefully place the dioptra on its tripod in front of you.
looks like bridge would be <'width'x'length'> (East-West)
The tile border to your <direction> is level
You make sure the dioptra is level.
You point the dioptra at <other player>.
You wave at <other player>.
You line up the dioptra with <other player>.
You read the graduations on the range pole and work out the height difference.
The tile border to your helpers <direction> is level
You check the heights of the plan ends.
<Height difference>.
You work out the orientation and width for the bridge.
You check for clearance between the bridge ends.
You check for protruding foliage.
You check for nearby cave entrances and any lava.
You check for any items in the way.
You check that you have permissions to build the bridge.
You check for any bridges that may interfere with this bridge.
You check there would be no buildings under this bridge.
You work out the styles of bridges that would fit.
You start working out the bridge components required.
Planned bridge area is <x> tiles long and <y> tile wide.
(23:ESabFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFBASE)
You stop surveying.
You pack up the dioptra.

When all requirements are met you are presented with list of possible bridges.

The selection depends on planned width, length, height difference and clearance below the planned bridge.

If you have choosen a flat bridge that is longer than 5 tiles then you have the possibility to change the schematic of your bridge plan.

When you have choosen a type of bridge you can name the planned bridge and select the steepness of the bridge if you've choosen an arched bridge.

After clicking Finalize a wooden frame for the bridge is constructed.

For each tile of the bridge a bridge segment has to be completed in multiple stages. Those are 'abutments' for the out segments, 'bracing' and 'floating' for stone bridges and 'crown' for rope and wood bridges.

Until the bridge has been completed no other bridge can be started by the character.

Bridge Warnings and Possible Solutions
Your end of the bridge is too close to the water level!
*Both ends of the bridge need to be at water level or higher.

"The quality of the dioptra makes it too hard to work out the distance." or "You can't read the graduations on the range pole at this distance".
*Improve both items. Note that the lowest QL of the two will determine the max length of bridge you can plan.

You notice that there is not enough clearance for a bridge to be built here.
*Remove trees, houses, fences at both end tiles where the bridge should have enough drop off.
*For bridges from a building, all walls under the bridge must be a solid wall type. Arched, windowed, and doors will not provide enough support.

There are some terrains nearby
*A cave entrance is one factor. Make sure to build the bridge at least 2 tiles away from the opening.

The (East) tile border in front of you must be level.
*Level the tile borders where the bridge will connect.

Some terrain is in the way!
*Possible solution: lower any tiles that height-wise are near the span of the bridge.

You notice that the west bridge end does not butt all to same building all way along.
*Possible solution: In the diagram below try standing on the letter B for both planners.
Skill Requirements
* Bridge material calculator located here: http://forum.wurmonline.com/index.php?/topic/122044-bridge-material-calc/
* The first level of a house is calculated at 33 dirt. Each additional level adds 30 dirt.
* Brick/Marble bridges require solid walls directly below, for at least two stories of the building. Example: 3-story house can have a door on the first floor, but must have solid walls for the next two floors on the side with a connecting bridge.
* Any bridges connected directly to a structure will disappear with the structure. Bridges connecting to the ground in front of a structure will remain.
* A bridge must be two-lane, part of an existing highway, and not connected to any structures in order to be considered part of a highway.
* Bridges will only begin to decay after a week of no use.
* Modifying the terrain after planning a bridge will require re-planning the bridge.
* You can dig under bridges, with the exception of at the ends or next to supports.
* Bridges cannot be built over a settlement token.
* Building Tip: Building 2 or more tile wide bridges can be difficult to plan. As the diagram shows below you must offset your two characters (the A and the B in the diagram) by how many tiles wide you want the bridge to be and make the two characters face each other.
Description
Putting an item in an altar and right-clicking the altar will give the option to "sacrifice". Items can be sacrificed in an altar representing the god you are following and has several beneficial effects that depend on what you sacrifice and how much. Sacrificing an item will remove it from the world so apart from sacrificing in order to gain any of the beneficial effects it's used in order to get rid of junk.

Requirements:
* Follower of a god, with at least 10 faith

Effects
Sacrificing may yield:
* Favor gain
* Healing of wounds
* Alignment gain
* Potion
* Refill of Stamina, Nutrition, Food and Water
* Skill gain
* Deed Faith bonuses

Deed Faith bonuses are only increased if your Favor is already full. See Faith bonuses for details.

Favor
As mentioned previously sacrificing items may yield a number of various effects, favor gain being one of them. The amount of favor you gain from sacrificing an item depends on what its value is. Items typically have a "get price" that you can see when right-clicking them in your inventory. This number is based on item type, material, and QL, and can be used to determine how much favor it will yield when sacrificed. See Base Price for details.

Double bonus materials
Each god has a specific material or materials they prefer, which give double the usual favor of deed Faith bonus. That means that if you sacrifice an item of a material your god prefers, you'll get twice as much favor or deed Faith bonus as the item normally would. For example: If a Vynora priest sacrifices a door lock it gets x amount of favor but if a Magranon priest sacrifices the same door lock it gets 2x the amount.

*Vynora: Wood
*Fo: Pottery; Cotton; Food
*Magranon: Metals
*Libila: Alchemy ingredient items (see below)
*Tosiek: Cloth
*Nahjo: Alchemy ingredient items (see below)

Note that for gods that prefer alchemy ingredients, the game does not use the Get Price value to determine favor gain; instead, it uses the formula (QL / 10). For example, sacrificing an 80QL corn would give a Nahjo priest up to 8 favor. For deed Faith bonus, the normal formula based on the Get Price value is still used, and gives double the bonus like other gods' preferred materials.

Common double favor items
Due to high base value and ease of creation, some items are particularly popular and useful for certain gods. For example, yoyos are often used by Vynora priests because a priest can craft them at high quality without need for improvement, and their base value is higher than most other wooden items.

*Vynora: Yoyo and Torch
*Fo: Square piece of cloth
*Magranon: Door lock
*Libila: Alchemy ingredient items
*Tosiek: Square piece of cloth
*Nahjo: Alchemy ingredient items

Healing of wounds
When sacrificing items of high value the gods might heal your wounds. How much is healed depends on the value of the sacrificed items (note: more tests needed unless results of this exists elsewhere on the wiki already)

Alignment gain
<!-- (Verify specific value!) Sacrificing items that have a "get price" value of at least 50 copper will increase your alignment. See Alignment for details. -->
Sacrificing an item with a high enough Get Price value will increase your Alignment. As with deed Faith bonus and Favor, an item's value counts as double if it is made from a material preferred by your god. For example, the minimum Get Price value a Vynora priest would need to get an Alignment increase from a metal item is double what it would need to be for a Magranon follower or priest.

Potion
A potion might be awarded when sacrificing items that add up to a high value. The potion will end up inside your intentory.

Refill of Stamina, Nutrition, Food and Water and Skill gain
Sacrificing a rare item of any kind will refill the stamina, food and water bars in the same fashion as the Path of Love ability Refresh and will heal a wound, usually the first wound received, regardless of severity. Rare items work exactly as the Refresh spell while supreme and fantastic abilities grant you a tick in a random skill.

The rare items need to be of full weight in order to give the bonus, i.e. a rare log that weighs 24 kg will refill the bars but a log that weighs 17kgs will not.

Rare Items
* Sacrificing rares gives 99% stamina, nutrition, water, food and and will heal a wound, usually the first wound received, regardless of severity
* Sacrificing supremes gives the same as rares with a small gain in a random skill
* Sacrificing fantastics gives the same as supremes but with greater skill gain.

Notes
* Keys can only be sacrificed if the lock they belong to has already been destroyed. The lock must therefore be sacrificed before the key is
* To be able to sacrifice an item it must fit in the altar. If you are sacrificing to get rid of the item you can try using a trash heap.
* Sacrificing creatures for a mission is done with a sacrificial knife see related page for more.
* Sacrificing 10 items one at a time will give the same amount of favor or deed Faith bonus as sacrificing all 10 at once. The items are registered individually and not as part of a unit. Combined items also generally give the same favor and bonus, except in the case of favor gain for alchemy ingredients for Libila and Nahjo.
* For low-value items, there is a minimum amount the Get Price value will contribute. For example, a 20QL tar will provide the same favor or deed Faith bonus as a 40QL tar.
* For deed Enchantment bonus specifically, most low-value bulk items such as wood scrap use a formula based on weight instead of value if the value is low enough. This formula does not take your god into account, so large combined woodscrap may give the same Enchantment bonus regardless of god. The Healing and War bonuses always use item value, not weight.
Leather armour
Leather armour generally provides the least amount of base defense. However it also has one of the smallest penalties to attack speed and walking speed. Leather armour has defensive bonuses to bashing, while the equipment itself also gets extra damage from cutting. A full leather set weighs 3.2KGs and will slow you to 15.40KM/h on cobblestone when worn.
:*Leather boot
:*Leather sleeve
:*Leather cap

Note
The QL of the leather armour piece made will be the lesser of 20% of your leatherworking skill or the QL of the leather used.

Studded leather armour
Studded leather armour generally provides a moderate amount of base defense with similar penalties as leather armour. Studded leather armour represents a good common ground between speed and reasonable defense though still less base defense then plate provides. A full studded leather set weighs 4.9KGs and will slow you to 14.77KM/h on cobblestone when worn.

Note
You may not be able to make a studded leather jacket if it is the first studded leather armour piece you attempt. Try to create another piece first.

Drake hide armour
Drake hide is the best leatherworking-based armour existing in Wurm. Its protection rating is between chain and plate, yet more sensitive to cutting and piercing than chain armor.
Drake hide armor has the lowest penalty to and walking speed other than scale (about 16 km/h on cobble) and is very lightweight.
A small four wheel catapult designed to be dragged by one person. It could be used to hurl items at walls and fences.
Overall materials required
A list of all base materials required to create a PAGENAME.
* 7 logs
* 11 shafts
* 5 ropes
* 12 planks

Usage
A catapult's primary use is the destruction of walls and gates. You can hit another person with it, but it's very difficult.

To use a catapult, you must first load it with ammunition. Almost everything can be fired, but rock shards and ores do the most damage. Quality and damage of the ammunition will affect the amount of damage done to your target. To load a catapult, activate an item in your inventory, right-click the catapult, and select Machine -> Load.

After you load the catapult, it must be winched. With every winch the catapult shoots 1 tile further. The minimum distance a catapult can shoot is 10 tiles, the maximum distance is 50 tiles. To winch a catapult, right-click the catapult after it has been loaded, and select winch. This distance is calculated including both the tiles that the catapult and the target are standing on.

To aim the catapult, simply drag it so that it points to the target. This can be improved with further precision by changing the firing angle. By default, the firing angle will be 45 degrees and it can be changed to be between 5 and 85 degrees.

Only when the catapult has winched at least 10 winches, you can fire the catapult. Right-click the catapult, select Machine and then select 'Fire'. If it was properly aimed and winched, you will either get a message in event window that you just missed the target, or a list of everything it hits. If it only says that you've hit nothing, your aim is off.

Catapults' trajectory is affected by elevation. Firing uphill requires more winching to hit the target, whereas firing downhill requires less winching.

| Stone Brick || Less damage than rock shards
| Ore || Frequently used during raids, as it cannot be used by the enemy to repair walls and it's near worthless after shot.
|-
| Corpse || Deal moderate damage and can be useful when other ammo types are unavailable.
|}

Notes
* The skill used when operating a catapult is Catapults.
* Needs 21.0 body strength to use.
* Can be dragged.
* Although the description implies it can be dragged by an animal, it cannot.
* Action timer for winching is affected by skill
* Cannot be fired inside caves.
* Any item launched with the catapult will be either heavily damaged or destroyed. Any item that is not destroyed will be at the target tile.
* Starting power is determined by the number of winches. Power is directly related to starting velocity (E.G: 20 winches is 20 m/s)
* Anything within a small radius of the landing position will take damage and the size of the radius is determined by the size of the thrown projectile
* Catapults projectile arc is checked for any walls, floors, bridges or fences it hits. Otherwise it travels a full arc until it hits the ground.
* Weight, quality and final velocity all add into how much damage it deals to objects it lands on (Metal and Stone do the most damage)
* Catapults can fire over buildings and walls.
* Catapults cannot hit guard towers.
* Catapults cannot damage mine doors.
* You can do a maximum of 20 damage to your target in one successful hit.
* Catapults seem to be able to damage bridges (Thanks to Cenotaph for testing). Four Rock Shards did 8.0374664 dmg on a bridge of QL = 48.90988.
* Cannot be operated with furniture or other "large" objects within 1 tile of it.
* Cannot be operated if the tile it stands on is below water level.

Freedom servers
It is possible to use catapults on Freedom servers, with following limitations:
* On deed: can destroy anything (including owned houses) if given destroy building permission. Applies to ally and non-citizens as well.
* Off deed: (including perimeters) can destroy any fence, wall or hedge, but not buildings, even if the building belongs to the user.

Tips
* When attacking with a catapult during a raid, a good strategy is to use ore as ammunition. Ore does the same damage as equivalent quality rock, but unlike rock cannot be used by the defenders to repair or rebuild their walls.
* Combine ammunition into 80kg shards in order to maximize damage.
* Quality of ammunition not only affects the damage, but keeping quality 25+ generally yields a chance your ammo is not destroyed. This allows you in demolition situations to collect spent ammo for using again.
* A spyglass is an excellent tool for measuring distance when winching

Main Page / PAGENAME

Introduction
When a beacon appears you may walk through it for the Rift Investigator achievement and when the rift is closed you will get the Rift Defender and Rifter titles.

The rifts work off of a points system. Depending on the amount of kills the player participated in they can get a higher participation ranking. The rankings are from minimal to phenomenal. Before the rift is closed you may type /rift to get the participation ranking list; however, you have to be standing inside the rift area. After the rift is closed the command can be issued anywhere to view the ranking list.

When a rift is closed inline will be broadcast server-wide as an event message to all. If the 20 hearts are sacrificed before all the rift mobs are dead, the mobs will de-spawn and leave a pile of ash in their spot. At the closing of the rift every player who participated in at least 10 kills will get a lump of rare metal (Seryll, Glimmersteel or Adamantine), quality, and weight.

How They Work
A light beacon will appear on a server (one beam per server at one time) 2 days before the rift will open on PvE and 3 hours before on PvP. The location is random each time. The actual size of light appears to be a radius of 20 tiles in all directions from the beacon, or a 41x41 tile perimeter.

When the rift opens, it will clear all the trees within its borders and turn all terrain into dirt. Also, when the rift opens it will spawn rift stones, rift crystals, and rift trees, which can be harvested once the rift has closed. You cannot terraform inside the rift area until it has been closed. Also, rift mobs will attack all the creatures in the rift area at the time of the rift opening weather said creatures of passive or aggressive. The only time the rift mobs will not attack creatures is if they are being ridden. Note: This does not apply to hitched animals, which will still be attacked.

When the rift opens many different kinds of mobs will spawn. These mobs come in waves of increasing difficulty and they include Rift Beasts, Rift Casters and Rift Summoners, Rift Jackals and Rift Ogres, Ogre Mages, and lastly the Warmaster. In order to advance to the next wave of creatures you must sacrifice 20 rift mob hearts that are obtained by butchering the mobs at the Rift Altar, an altar that the rift will spawn on its own. Note: These hearts are not like normal hearts. They cannot be put into a food storage bin and create healing covers of useless potency. When a mob is killed every player has a 5% chance to get a loot item that can include but are not limited to shoulder pads and jewelry with special abilities. Please visit this guide on the rift loot for any questions.

Notes
* Killing Champion rift mobs seem to give a higher chance in receiving a rift accessory.
* As of 2/10/17 Patch Notes, If you have more than 60 participation (phenomenal), the lump received will be less random QL and weight, and be more dependent on your participation score (with a slight amount of random % on top of your score)
* In addition to having more than 60 participation score, you'll get an amount of Rift Materials (up to a max of 20) that are random between the three rift materials and QL will be scale based on participation.

Rift Materials
Resources can be collected from rifts once the rift has been closed.
* Mine to collect rift stone shards from Rift stones.
* Prospect the crystals to collect Rift fragments.
* Cutting down trees to collect Rift wood.

When combined with a metal, they can be forged into runes, which will provide bonuses to equipment, vehicles and containers. Bonuses from these items will depend on the metal used when forging, as well as other factors, and provide a range of bonuses, including:

*Increased volume capacity
*Lower weight
*Less damage taken
*Higher shatter resistance
*Reducing decay of the contents of a container

Some will be one use only, but others will attach to the target to provide a continual boost. Only one rune that provides an ongoing effect can be attached to a tool, excepting the single use ones.

Description
A large kiln-like structure made from logs covered in dirt. The purpose is to turn the logs into tar and charcoal.

Charcoal pile is a large structure made from logs and dirt and lit up with a kindling. When it burns, it slowly creates charcoal, tar and ash. They are mainly used to create charcoal in order to make steel lumps.

Creating
* The quality of the kindling affects the chance of creating a charcoal pile.
* The maximum quality of a coal pile is limited by the average quality of the raw materials. The coal-making skill however affects how much each added ingredient actually adds to the piles quality.
* It uses 1 kindling and 1 log to create. Using combined kindling will use the entire combined amount.
* Piles cannot be created or continued inside a house.

Usage
* After finishing the pile, light it with your steel and flint and a kindling in your inventory.
* Once lit the pile will produce charcoal, tar and ash of the initial quality of the pile whenever a decay tick increases its damage. The pile products can be removed at any time without harm to further production.
* The pile will burn for one to six real life days until it reaches 100 damage. At this time the pile will disappear and all remaining products will form an item pile on the ground.
* The higher the quality, the longer the pile will burn and the more products it will produce:

Battlepants' test for the approximation of pile quality and number of produce.
* 29.75ql birchpile produced 17 charcoals
* 56.58ql birchpile produced 30 charcoals
* 46.01ql walnutpile produced 25 charcoals

* Light as soon as possible. Unlit piles will soon start to take "invisible" damage till lit, which is when the damage becomes apparent. Products are then produced with the effective quality of the pile at the time of lighting.

Notes
* A single charcoal, ash, and tar is produced at each decay tick.
* Wood type affects production:
** Cedarwood piles burn slower due to their decay tick mechanic, but produce the same amount as a non special wood type.
** Oakenwood piles produce more charcoal as they take less decay per tick and thus have more ticks.
** Walnut Piles give a 10% bonus on the quality of the items it produces.
** Other wood types have no effect on burn time or charcoal production.
* The last log added determines the wood type of the pile. So you could add 20 pine logs, but have the final one added be an oak log, and you would get an oak charcoal pile.
* Ash decays fast, even inside the pile as it burns.
* Making 20 piles from discovery without sleep bonus will net around 24 Coal-making Skill.
* It is possible to get a rarity drumroll while continuing a charcoal pile which will produce a random number of rare charcoal, ash and tar.

SomebodyX: Added Initial Table, will add more CSS stuff tomorrow.

Description
Runes are items that can be used to give other items a bonus, or used one time to activate their effect.

There are 65 different rune effects in Wurm, using combinations of 13 different metals and 5 possible gods available.

Creation
Runes are crafted by using different materials found at rifts (rift crystals, rift stones, and rift wood) combined with a lump of metal. The different combinations will create different rune types, each type giving a different effect.

When crafting a rift resource with a lump of metal, you are given the option of 5 different rune types:
*Fo
*Magranon
*Vynora
*Libila
*Jackal

Depending on the type of rune created, the skills used will be jewelry smithing, stonecutting, or fine carpentry.

Each god and metal combination creates a rune of a different effect; that is, a brass rune of Libila will not have the same effect as a brass rune of Magranon. Some may be similar in effect, with different strengths.

Effects
The combination of metal type and god type will determine the effect of a rune.

The rift resource used will determine what the rune can be attached to or used on.
*Rift wood runes - can be used on wooden items
*Rift crystal runes - can be used on metal items
*Rift stone runes - can be used on stone, pottery, cloth and leather items

At the closing of the rift every player who participated in at least 10 kills will get a lump of random material, quality, and weight. Some examples are:
*20ql .40kg rare Adamantine lump
*70ql .40kg rare steel lump
*77ql .25kg seryll lump

Products
Bees will consume either honey or sugar approximately once every 5 real life days, with a preference for sugar (there is a daily check with a 1-in-5 chance of consuming 10g of honey or sugar).
*If no honey or sugar is available, the bees have a chance to die off.

Queens
The bee hive may have an attached descriptor to its name when you hover over it, which tells you the status:
* Dormant - this shows in the winter only. This means the hive has one queen, and will reactivate in the spring.
* Noisy - the hive has two queens.
* Active - the hive has one queen, and is active.

Migration
Bees can migrate to a domestic bee hive if certain conditions are met. There are also some things a player can do to increase the chances.

If a wild hive has one queen bee, the domestic hive must be of a higher quality than the wild hive.
*The higher the quality of the domestic hive, the higher the chance of migration.
*The closer the domestic hive is to the wild hive, the higher the chance of migration.
**The distance and quality of the domestic hive from the wild hive both combine to effect the odds that a migration will occur.
*The migration will bring the queen and the swarm to the domestic hive.

If a wild hive has two queen bees, the hive quality will not affect the chances of migration.
*A domestic bee hive will have a higher chance of migration the closer it is to the wild hive.
*The migration will bring the second queen to the domestic hive.

If a wild hive's queen(s) have all migrated, the wild hive will be removed.

If a domestic bee hive had a queen residing before Wurm winter and becomes empty, they have a chance to repopulate in the spring

Opening a Hive
When opening a hive, the bees can sting you, dealing poison damage, unless you have a lit bee smoker.
*Note: When opening a hive with a lit bee smoker in the inventory, all produced honey and bees wax within the hive has a chance to be removed.
