Description
...This is a very rare and interesting version of the item.

Rare items were introduced in an update, Thursday, 29 March 2012.

Players may occasionally succeed in creating rare, supreme or even fantastic items. These tools are faster, weapons do more damage, and armour protects a bit better. This may also happen as you improve or polish items and rare items may turn into even rarer items. Constructing new items using rare materials may turn the unfinished item into a rare item. Rare guard towers spawn more guards, for instance. More functionality will be added over time.

Generally you should hear a "drum-roll" when a chance of creating a rare comes up. (Fishing is one exception to this; there may be others)

When rares were introduced, we were told "You get approximately 1 chance of 50% each hour to create a rare item." What this actually means to game play is unknown. The odds of creating a rare seem to be much higher than improving an item and making it rare.

Effects
Sacrificing rares gives 99% nutrition, water and food

There is also a chance that Sacrificing a rare will heal you if you have any wounds.

Tools
*Rare tools go faster. For example, a 57.41 ql whetstone had a 12 second use while a rare 57.41 ql whetstone took 11.9 seconds.
*Lockpicks break less and aid picking
*Fishing rods dmg less and have better odds at rare fish
*Butchering knives increase meat yield and item ql
*Rare grooming brushes take 12.5% less damage
*A rare Small anvil increases ql of the product
*Saw increases the QL cap (normally limited by the material QL) by 1 QL
*Rugs gain more skill (somewhere between 10 and 20% higher)

Weapons and Armor
*Rare weapons hit harder.
*Rare armor protects more.
*Arrows hit harder and miss less
*Bows hit harder and miss less
*War machines do more damage

Vehicles, Mounts and Containers
*Containers (including boats) are harder to pick
*Ships sail faster (up to max so good only for fewer people)
*Carts move faster
*Horse shoes improve speed, a rare horse shoe gives 0.01km.h extra gain (only tested at 70ql)

Other
*Locks are harder to pick.
*Yoyos and Puppets succeed more
*Fires heat up faster and stay lit longer.
*Altars get bonus to normal affects and alignment during prayers and sermons
*Food gives more nutrition
*Drinks are more potent
*Gems store more favor
*Healing items has better effect
*Signs have a few more letters
*Rare rock shards can create whetstones 1 QL higher than the shard
*A rare toolbelt has 1 more slot than the equivalent normal toolbelt
*Rare lye can create leather 1 QL higher than the hide

Notes
*Rare items, graphically, have a pulsating effect added.
*Sometimes rare items create their own categories in inventory lists. For example, if you have 5 longswords in a pile, and 2 are rare, you would see longsword (3x) and rare long sword (2x). Other times, items like sprouts for example, will all appear under the regular sprouts category. This has been said to be true for logs as well.
*Rare items can be combined into larger weights, for items that can normally combined (make sure the active item is at the top of the list), but this seems to usually cause the rare status to disappear.
*Rare materials may not be put in a bulk storage bin.
*Rare ore has been seen to make rare lumps.
*All types of item can become 'rare', but not all of them have advantages coded for them.
*Using rare small iron nails does not create a rare wooden fence.

There is also a chance that Sacrificing will heal you if you have any wounds.

Inscribed:A flat piece of papyrus made from pressed reed fibre. It appears the papyrus sheet has something written on it.
Inscribing
It is possible to write notes on a papyrus sheet.

* Fill a reed pen with black ink or dye
* Activate the reed pen
* Right-click the papyrus sheet and select Inscribe
* Enter the text in the window and click send

All 0.01kg of liquid in the pen are used even if you abort writing on the papyrus sheet.

After a papyrus sheet is inscribed it gets the option to 'read inscription', which opens a window with the inscribed text.

The number of letters you can write on a sheet of papyrus is 121 + (pen QL * 2). Decimals are counted, so a 40.50ql pen allows one more letter than a 40.49ql pen.

Mail
You can mail the inscribed papyrus sheet for a reduced cost of 40i to any server in the same server cluster.

Sending cross server does not double the cost, but:

If <playername> does not return or accept the item before it expires (usually in two weeks), it will be lost. The inter-island mail service can not handle expired returns.
Notes
* Failure to create a papyrus sheet will use 0.05kg of the reed fibre.
* The amount of letters you can inscribe is affected by the QL of the reed pen.
:* You carefully inscribe the papyrus sheet with 297 printed letters. - using a 88ql pen.
:* You carefully inscribe the papyrus sheet with 210 printed letters. - using a 44ql pen.
* Trying to drop papyrus sheets into a bulk storage bin returns the message: The inscription on the papyrus sheet would be destroyed.
* Papyrus sheets have a Combine option but they do not actually combine.
* The inscription contains some characters that are too complex for you to inscribe - you are limited by the characters that you can use when renaming an item in game. If you try to use question marks, you will get an error message.

Main / Skills / Pottery

Description
Pottery is the shaping and cooking of clay into container items.

Method
Getting clay
Activate your shovel and right-click on a tile of clay, select dig and when finished "clay" will appear in your inventory (If it doesn't, you weren't standing on the clay tile). If you receive a message in your event window that says you are not strong enough to dig here, find a flat area of grass or dirt and practice digging to raise your skill or find a flatter clay corner.

Creation
Activate one of your hands and right-click on the clay, select one of the items from the create menu.

Improving
You cannot improve hardened clay items, so improve them before putting them into a fire to harden them. You cannot use clay items that are not hardened.

Improvement tools:
:* Clay
:* Water
:* Wooden clay shaper
:* Wooden spatula
:* Hand

Finishing
Drop the clay item into a fire, such as a campfire or stone oven. Once they reach glowing hot, they'll turn into finished pottery items. These items cannot be improved.

Resulting items
Description
A wide, open wooden tub that can hold lots of olive oil. Huge oil tubs are used to store olive oil in so that on-deed spirit templars can use it to re-fill lights. They are difficult to move as they cannot be picked up. Use cedar wood to prevent the tub from decaying too quickly. Huge oil tubs are created exactly the same way as a regular huge tub, and currently share the same graphic.

It is advised not to attempt to build a huge oil tub without high carpentry skill.

Stargrace: /* Placement */ updated trader information in regards to disbands

Main / PAGENAME

Description
A trader is a NPC who buys and sells items. You can also trade items for items with it.

Placement
Trader is placed by using a trader contract, which can be purchased from other traders at a cost of 50s. A new trader must be placed at a minimum distance of 63 tiles away from other traders. Trader must be placed inside a building (not a market stall like Personal Merchants can), but stays functional even if the building disappears. Trader cannot be moved after it has been placed. If you own the writ to the building the trader is in and bring that building on-deed (for example by resizing the deed), the trader will automatically become a citizen of your settlement. If you disband your deed for any reason the trader will vanish unless you first manage citizens and remove the trader as a citizen. Non-citizen traders to not benefit your deed upkeep. You can not place a new trader on your deed with an old trader nearby. Resizing a deed does not remove a trader from a deed.

Item stocks
A trader will always start with the following items in stock:
* 3 farwalker stones
* 3 farwalker twigs
* 3 large magical chests
* 1 personal merchant contract
* 3 resurrection stones
* 3 Rods of Transmutation
* 1 settlement form
* 3 shaker orbs
* 3 sleep powders
* 3 small magical chests
* 3 steel and flints
* 1 trader contract
* 3 tuning forks of metal detection

Once all of the items in any of these categories is bought, the trader will always have at least 1 in stock on the next trade. For example if you buy 3 large magical chests in one trade, you will see the trader has none left. On re-trading with the same trader it will always somehow have 1 more in stock.

Beyond this, traders only have the items they have bought from players. When the King distributes new funds to traders (see below), he may claim some items from the stock.

Cash flow
Traders will buy almost any item, unless he considers it worthless, it cannot be traded, or he is broke. Every item has a Base Price, which is modified by the trader according to local supply and demand. For each transaction performed by the trader, a small portion is added to the village upkeep fund as a tax. The tax is settable on trader creation, 40% maximum. The remaining money goes to the seller.

Exception: Money from deed and contract purchases go straight to the king.

A new trader starts out with 1 silver coin in funds. Periodically, the king will distribute new funds to traders, provided the trader has sold at least 10% of what it purchased. You can see what amounts a trader has bought and sold with the Get Info ability.

The main source of the kings funds is settlement upkeep. The king will not grant funds to traders holding 50 silver or more.

A Cash Flow Fix
Try this fix if your trader has not been receiving funds from the kingdom pool, and you have confirmed via Path of Knowledge that its ratio is 0.0.
Buy 1 silver worth of player made items off the trader.
Sell back the player made items as as you bought.
If you are able to sell back all the player made items you bought, then the trader should have a ratio of around .50
of course if the trader is a citizen of a deed, then a portion of the coin you put on the trader will go into deed upkeep so you won't be able to get the full 1s back.
A ratio of at least .10 is needed to get funds off the kingdom pool.
Once a Trader's ratio has been corrected, it may take a few days or a server restart before the trader start acquiring coin off the kingdom pool. I'm not quite sure how often the mysterious figure visits the traders, buying random stuff off of them which replenishes some of the trader's coins from the kingdom pool.
This is speculative, however It seems I have been able to get 1 trader that was suffering from its 28 day ratio reset back in working condition. I won't make any guarantees this will work but if your trader hasn't been collecting any coin, a 1 silver investment could pay off. Detailed Knowledge of Traders is limited so this fix might have errors, but good luck. ~AAetius

Notes
* Traders will not disappear for not having any activity for a while.
* A 3x3 house with the trader on the centre tile is required to protect a trader from being used.

Main / Skills / Nature / PAGENAME

Description
Animal husbandry allows for the production (breeding) of new creatures, sometimes with increased quality, without the need to wait for new spawns.

Characteristics gained
Soul / Soul depth

Method
*Both of the animals you wish to breed must be not hungry. One must be a male and the other one a female. Lead one of them with a rope (note that some animals must be tamed to be led) and move it close to the other one. Right-click on the animal you are not leading and select the "Breed" option.
*Grooming also gives animal husbandry skill gains. Activate a grooming brush and select groom while right-clicking on a groomable creature. You can groom animals once per hour.

Notes
* Animals must be of the same species.
* If breeding fails, you will receive a message that the male "shys away and interrupts the action".
* If breeding fails or is successful and you attempt to breed again, the male animal will show that he's "not in the mood" until 45 real life minutes pass.
* Females will not breed while they are pregnant. Once the female gives birth, the animal can breed again.
* Animals do not have to be "fat" to breed, only "no longer interested in food" (when trying to feed them). Grass eaters will typically be in this state after a minute or 2 on grass or crops.
* Age is a factor in breeding: calves or foals will not breed, neither will young/early adolescence animals.
* Breeding increases a player's soul depth.
* Pregnancy times varies from 5-11 wurm weeks, regardless of species.
* Animals can have a miscarriage.
* If too hungry or low on fat animals can die when giving birth.
* Breeding animals with characteristics such as Champion will provide a chance that the offspring will also have that characteristic. This chance is dramatically increased when breeding two characteristics of the same type together. (Two Champions for example.)
** The same applies to Traits as well.
* Longer blood lines will support more traits. (For example: A 4th generation dog can have up to 6 or so traits where a 1st generation dog (the first offspring from wild dogs) usually only have 0-3 traits.)
* The name is determined at birth, the traits are determined at breeding (noticed on a server revert on 2011-03-01)

Traits
Bred animals have a chance of having traits.(Enhancement/Deformity). Animals can have multiple traits. Examining an animal will show traits, if one has the required skill level:

* 0 skill: Horse's color is considered a trait.
* 20 skill: "It will fight fiercely." (High fighting skill?)
* 21 skill: "It has fleeter movement than normal." (Minor speed boost)
* 22 skill: "It is a tough bugger." (Withstands more damage)
* 23 skill: "It has a strong body." (Improved body strength?)
* 24 skill: "It has lightning movement." (Randomly increases speed for a short duration)
* 25 skill: "It can carry more than average." (Less penalty to speed due to high load)
* 26 skill: "It has very strong leg muscles." (Less penalty to speed due to slope? Does not currently do this.)
* 27 skill: "It has keen senses." (Increased agro range or possibly harder to tame?)
* 28 skill: "It has malformed hindlegs." (Minor speed penalty)*
* 29 skill: "The legs are of different length." (Major speed penalty)*
* 30 skill: "It seems overly aggressive." (Goes into frenzy when attacked)*
* 31 skill: "It looks very unmotivated." (Seldom uses speed boosts?)*
* 32 skill: "It is unusually strong willed." (Randomly refuses to follow)*
* 33 skill: "It has some illness." (Usually unridable. Penalty to body strength)*
* 34 skill: "It looks constantly hungry." (is twice as fast hungry again)*
* 39 skill: "It looks feeble and unhealthy." (Prone to disease)*
* 40 skill: "It looks unusually strong and healthy." (Has a higher resistance to disease)
* 41 skill: "It has a certain spark in its eyes." (Affects breeding? <s>Will not die of old age?</s> Disproved, see talk.)
(All "?" are unconfirmed, traits with a * are removed by a Genesis cast)

How traits are passed is explained on the forums

Inbreeding
With a recent change inbreeding is supposed to have a negative effect. It adds extra negative traits that don't count against the regular traits pool.

Inbreeding is mating with the father or mother or when the two animals have the same father or mother. Basically if you only can find two horses you'll be ok in three generations. But it might be better to mate your horses with your neighbours horses.

See Rolfs forum post for details.

Caring
To prolong venerable animals from dying of old age you can care for them. To start caring stand next to the animal, right click the animal and select Care for. If you start caring for that animal you'll get the message:
You now care specially for Aged fat Tearbabe, to ensure longevity. You may care for 1 more creatures.

The amount of animals you can care for is limited by the animal husbandry skill of the player. If you can't care for more animals you'll get the message
You may not care for any more creatures right now. You are already caring for 1 creatures.

You can care for 1 animal and 1 extra animal for every 10 skill in animal husbandry. So at 40 Animal husbandry skill you can care for 5 animals.

To stop caring for all cared animals type the command /stopcaring in the chat window. You'll get the message
You no longer care for the one creature you used to.

To stop caring for a specific animal, you will need to right click the animal and 'care for' again.

Stargrace: Noted change that mayors are now able to destroy altars without side effects

Altars are primarily used to pray at to gain Faith.

Altars also create the domain of the gods. You know when you're in such a domain when you get the message "You feel the presence of <god>".
When you first build an altar in an area without a domain you will receive the message: "The domain of <God> now has reached this place."

Domains can overlap, but only the strongest domain can affect you. When you are in the domain of your God and have at least 10 faith, you'll get certain bonuses, including a fighting bonus. The amount of the bonus is affected by a great number of things, such as faith, alignment, the type of the altar (see below), the distance to the altar, the quality of the altar, and if you're a Champion.

Priests also get several bonuses from altars, including a bonus of up to 20% to successfully cast a spell, and an increase to the chance of casting a higher strength enchant spell.

Another use of altars is sacrificing.

Note: If you are trying to make an altar for Priest of a different religion, i.e. you are a black lighter and your priest is Vynora, you can build the altar, and have your priest put the last piece of the altar on by unclicking faithful and attaching the last piece. Works for wooden and stone altars. Underground altars will still give their bonuses above ground, for example, underground altars will spawn mycelium above ground, however you will not receive the domain message moving through these underground altars.

If you desecrate your deity's altar you stop following that god and have your faith and favor reset to 0. Excorcism xp is gained. The altar is removed from the game.

Before desecrating, it should be noted that mayors are able to equip a maul and right click an altar to select the destroy option. Do not desecrate your deity's altar unless you are certain you want to deal with the faith and favor resets. There are no known penalties for destroying an altar on deed if you are the mayor.

Types of altars
There are four types of altars. Wooden altars are the worst type, gold altars are the best type. The metal altars can be created inside each others domain, while the stone and wooden altars cannot. However, you can move a finished altar into another domain. Domains do not cross the cave/above-ground layers, so you can have one domain underground and another on the surface. this can be an easy way to get several types of altars in one spot - create them below ground and push them above as you make them (or vice-versa).

<s>Although metal altars are the best type they do not override the influence of a lesser altar, for example a 50ql stone altar will override a 45ql gold altar, the type of material the altar is made out of does not make the influence stronger or weaker.</s> Influence was changed and needs testing as altars definitely sometimes override influence. Metal altars seem to give gifts and potion more frequently.
The power of the faith bonus will go up as you closer to the altar
