Creating an Account
After starting Wurm you see the Login Screen, where one can enter his/her Username and Password. Below it is a checkbox, labeled "Play as Guest" which is enabled by default. You should uncheck it and enter a password to create a new "real" Account, because Guest Accounts are not stored after you logoff.
+
The first thing you want to do is to create a valid account. To do this, go to the Wurmonline webpage and click Register (it's free). You will be asked for a Player name and an email address. Please note that the playername can only contain Alphabetic characters and no spaces. All letters in the name but the first one will be in lowercase.

Upon logging in, your avatar will spawn (see Spawning) in a village called Newtown (NT), you spawn here the first time you play, and also when you die (there are some exceptions).
+
You will then receive an email to the email address you supplied, in which there will be a completion link that will take you to the page where you choose your password and Challenge phrase. Once this step is complete, you may start the game by going back to the main webpage and clicking the 'Launch' image.
Do not steal in and around NT. The guards will quickly make swiss cheese of your body.

If you get stuck in a large pit or cave and definitely cannot get out or if you find a bug/glitch Etc, type '/dev' to contact any of the GM's/Devs if they are online. <br>(See Helpful People). Please use this feature sparingly.

After starting Wurm you see the Login Screen, where one can enter his/her Username and Password. Below it is a checkbox, labeled "Play as Guest" which is enabled by default. Guest accounts are disabled, so uncheck it, then enter your name and password.
<p>To move in the world of Wurm, simply use the W A S D keys, or the arrow keys, on your keyboard.</p>To look around, left-click and hold in the 3D-view, and move your mouse. Alternatively you can press the right or left arrow keys. <p>To center the view, press C on your keyboard.</p>

<p>To Autorun press the X key, or the Page up key.</p>

Steep slopes require you to climb. To climb a surface, click on the Climb button in your Event window. If you carry a lot of items, your stamina will drop like a stone while climbing, and fairly fast while walking. And you can not climb trees, sorry.

Note that when your green stamina bar goes down to nothing, your speed while walking will slow dramatically, and that if you are climbing and it drops to less than about half way, you may stop climbing and fall.
+
Upon logging in, your avatar will spawn (see Spawning) in a village called Newtown (NT) or The Landing. You spawn here the first time you play, and also when you die (there are some exceptions).

A compass is one of the most important tools for getting around Wurm. To use a compass, make sure it is in your inventory then place it wherever you like in your HUD. Secondly, you can look at the top of a settlement token in any village or homestead to see a compass rose.
+
Do not steal in and around NT or the Landing. The guards will quickly make swiss cheese of your body.

Important Hotkeys
+
If you get stuck in a large pit or cave and definitely cannot get out or if you find a bug/glitch Etc, type '/dev' to contact any of the GM's/Devs if they are online. <br>(See Helpful People). Please use this feature sparingly.
<p>The F-keys on your keyboard hold important access to things in Wurm.</p>

<p>F1 : Brings up the console, for debugging and generic information.</p>

<p>F2 : Skills. In this dialog you keep track of your body, religion, and skills. New skills are added as you learn and improve on them (i.e: Hot Cooking).</p><span style="color: #FFFFFF">.........</span>Incrementing of skills in this game takes time.

<p>F3 : Probably the most important hotkey in the game. This brings up the Inventory, where you keep all your items and can equip them to various parts of your body.</p>

<p>F10 : Hides the HUD from display so you can take clean screenshots of any view.</p>

<p>F11 : Take a screenshot. It is saved in your wurm directory/screenshots as a png file.</p>

<p>F12 : Quit the game. You are presented to a Yes/No-dialog before you can quit the game.</p>

Activating Items
+
Movement and windows
To activate an item to use (you can only activate one at a time), simply double-click an item in the inventory. A message will now appear at the bottom of your Inventory saying "Active: (Item)" depending on what item you chose. You can work with items within the inventory, there is no need to drop them on the ground. As an example, you activate the carving knife, and right-click on a log in your inventory, to create new items with it.
+
See the page Interface and controls for an explanation of the various windows, bars and keys.

Note: If you carry too much, speed at which you walk is reduced. You can also become encumbered, and walk extremely slowly, by carrying very heavy items such as felled trees. Improve your strength skill to carry more.
+
Getting started
 +
A) There are 3 things that are considered essential to getting started:
 +
# You need to start developing your cooking skills, go here: Guide To Cooking. Without food, your stamina bar will recharge extremely slowly and your actions will be limited.
 +
# You need to build a house, go here: The "how do I build a house?" guide.
 +
# You need a chest with a lock for secure storage, go here: Secure Storage

Remember you can also use your bodyparts for certain things, like molding clay, by activating one of your hands by expanding the Body-category and double-click a hand, and then right-clicking the clay in your inventory, to work with it.
+
* It is strongly recommended that you form or join a settlement, as cooperation is a key part of succeeding in any task.
 +
* Try to stay close to Newtown or The Landing until you get the hang of the game.

Equiping Items
+
Death and dying
To equip an item, like armor and weapons, open your inventory and expand the Body-category. Then just click-n-drag armor, weapons, or other items into appropriate slots.
+
When you die you will loose 0.25 points from each skill, and 0.1 body strength. Note that the body strength currently only updates every 2nd death or with a client restart. With the exception of the newbie items you get when you first start, deeds, writs, and any items you may have in a Bag of Keeping (BoK) or Master Bag of Keeping (MBoK) your items will be on your corpse. As long as your items are in your corpse they are safe from other players. You'll need to find it to get them back. If the corpse has decayed, usually 24 hours, the items that were on it will be a pile of items on the ground where you died.

Note: Shields go on your arm, not in your hand.
+
Also, you will be on a red and black screen with a little box in the middle, you will have to choose where you want to respawn. If you are dead and you cannot see the little box, type /respawn in your chat window.

Interaction
+
While you have no deed, you will only be able to spawn at Newtown or The Landing. When you are the owner or citizen of a settlement, you will be able to spawn on that settlement. If that settlement has any allies you will be able to spawn there also if you die within 50 tiles of their center.
Right-click on objects, tiles, people, anything, to interact with it. A pop-up menu appears saying "Requesting..." which means the game is fetching data from the server about the specific object you are trying to interact with. When it's done (which is fairly quickly), you are given several options in the menu of what to do with the object. There are different options for different objects. You get more options depending on what item you have active. For example, you are presented with another option called "Cut down" if you have the Small Axe active and right-click a tree.

<br><small><em>(Cutting down trees does not work with herrings!).</em></small><br><br>

Note that a menu that appears in <span style="color: #999999">dark grey</span> is cached.  Not all options may work.  It will be automatically replaced with the real menu when the data from the server is received.

The Bars
Stamina : Stop all activity, including working with items, walking or climbing. The less thirst and hunger you have, the faster it regenerates. If you are low on stamina, you can not walk as fast as normal, and not climb very far.<br>

Injuries : Wait for them to heal on their own. Be warned that if you are badly hurt, your injuries will get worse, not better. Cast healing spells (see Religion), apply some healing salves to it or bandage them with cotton rags (see First Aid). Your actual injuries are shown in your Inventory in the body category.<br>

Thirst : Right-click Water and select Taste to see if it's alright. If it is, right-click the water again and select Drink.<br>

Hunger : Forage for food by right-clicking on grass and select Nature > Forage. This type of food can only be eaten when your character is starving. You are going to need to cook the food in order to eat it when you are hungry. This will be explained later.<br>

Chat
+
19.50 to 19.44
In the lower left corner (by default), you have the chat-dialog. This is were you talk in Local, Kingdom, Village (when you become a citizen on a deed), and private messages.

The people shown in your local chat are the players within about 1 kilometer radius from your position.
+
(Approximately 6-7 deaths), You will be "Perma-Dead", meaning you will be un-able to play as that character any more. This applies to both the home server and the wild server. You can re-gain your strength by doing tasks such as Mining, Digging, or Woodcutting.

To talk in kingdom when the window isn't open, use the /shout -command, like so /shout Look out for the truck! Only people of the same kingdom as you can read this chat.

To talk with only one player, use the /tell-command (or /t), like this for example: /tell Zyndrome Hello, you may already be an instant winner!

To close a private conversation or kingdom-chat, click the small X in the upper right corner of the dialog. Local chat can not be closed.

To stop kingdom chat from appearing every time someone says something, use the /kchat command to turn kingdom chat off or on.

You may ignore somebody with the command /ignore, followed by their username.  Unignoring is accomplished the same way. Ignoring a GM, CM, or a dev is a bannable offense.<br>

To use special characters in any of the chat dialogs refer to this  chart.

Players may also use the in-game IRC chat by setting up IRC in the client to speak with other players in-game and out.

Common problems of new players
 +
Q) What's the difference between equip and activate?
 +
A) An active item can be used to interact with the world around you, like cut a tree down with your small axe active. You equip a weapon which is then used automatically while in combat.

Use this button to change between lawful/unlawful. See Lawful for more detail.
+
Q) How do I activate an item?
 +
A) Double click on it. It will show up at the bottom of the inventory next to Active: This means that you can use the item for the tasks it is designed for.

Current status
+
Q) How do I equip a weapon?
 +
A) Put it in your right hand. A second weapon can go in the left hand, but it is used less often, so put your main weapon in your right hand. When you do so, you will get an event message: 'You equip a short sword in your right hand'. You may also want to put a shield on your left arm (the left hand won't be used if you do), or armor on other bodyparts.

These are listed next to the buttons on the event window.
+
Q) Where do I get a pelt?
 +
A) Pelts are a product from large rats, wild cats, mountain lions and dogs. In order to get one, you first have to find and kill one of those animals. then you have to use a butchering knife to butcher the corpse. If you are successful, you may get a pelt or meat and other assorted products. Alternatively, you may be lucky enough to find one for sale at a trader, or you might find a more experienced player willing to give or sell you a pelt.

Full, hungry, starving, famished:
+
Q) Can I starve to death or die of thirst?
 +
A) No. If those bars are empty, you won't be able to perform some stamina draining actions (like mining) and your stamina will recharge very slowly. For more information, read Basic Knowledge.

These are states relating to your orange Hunger bar.
+
Q) Where are the rest of my beginner tools?
 +
A) When a new character is created, some of your equipment is automatically equipped. So, check your Torso and Hands. See inventory for further details.

Thirsty, Dehydrated, Parched :
+
Q) How do I make money?
 +
A) Unlike other games you may have played, money is not gained from killing monsters, but rather from the sale of items you have crafted to other players and traders. You could also convert real-life <strong>&euro;</strong>'s<small>(Euros)</small> into <del><strong>¤W¤</strong></del>'s<small>(Wurm currency/silver)</small> using the Wurm store...

These are related to your blue Thirst bar.
+
Q) Why is it so dark? I can't see
 +
A) * The problem may lie with your graphics card. Check to see if it features a gamma adjustment setting. If so turn it up very high.
 +
A) * The game features full day/night cycles and nighttimes are fairly dark. Time in Wurm is 8x real time so the darkness should only last 1 to 1.5 hours.

Hurting:
+
Q) How do I use a large anvil?
 +
A) The large anvil is best used by carrying it in the inventory and making the lump active.

This shows up or a while after you get hurt and is related to your red Injuries bar. While this status is here, you will walk slower.
+
Q) How do I change game settings? How do I get better frame rates
 +
A) On the log-in screen, there is an options button, you can change the settings there. More information on those settings can be found here

Climbing:
+
Q) What weapon should I create first?
This shows up when you press the climb button. See climbing for more detail.
+
A) A 10 quality short sword is good for killing rats and such.

Fighting:
+
Q) Why am I moving so slowly?
 +
A) There are many factors that can reduce your speed:
 +
* Rough terrain
 +
* Carrying heavy loads
 +
* Wearing armour
 +
* Having low stamina
 +
* The "Hurting" status

This shows up when you are in combat. See fighting for more detail.
+
Also, make sure the "climbing" toggle is switched off.

Defensive, Aggressive:
+
Q) What are percentages on creating items?
 +
A) The percentage listed on the create menu is the chance that you will succeed, all modifiers taken into account. However, unlucky streaks can and will happen. Failing ten times in a row with 95% success rate is very bad luck, not a bug.

This shows up when you select one of these modes on the 'right click menu'. See fighting for more detail.

Tired, Exhausted:
+
Q) Why wont my stamina regenerate?
 +
This may be caused by lag or you having "Hungry" and/or "Thirsty" in your event box, or your Climbing switch is activated.

These are states relating to your green Stamina bar. When you are Exhausted, you will walk slower. You will also be far more vulnerable to attacks.

This topic covers the most basic things you, a new player in Wurm Online, should know about.

What is Wurm Online?

wurmbanner.jpg

Notch (Founder): "...Wurm is not an MMORPG... ;)"

It's Massively Multiplayer Online Fantasy Simulator (MMOFS)

Or you could call it a Life Emulator...

A massive world you can create and shape around you.

How to Download

On the main website (http://www.wurmonline.com) you simply click the big "Launch" button on the left. This will begin download of the Java Webstart application which will load the whole game for you. If this does not work (IE:/ if you end up with a .jnlp file that doesn't do anything) you will need to install JAVA from http://www.java.com If you have a problem with getting the Wurm client working try looking at the Common_bugs_and_solutions page.

Creating an Account

The first thing you want to do is to create a valid account. To do this, go to the Wurmonline webpage and click Register (it's free). You will be asked for a Player name and an email address. Please note that the playername can only contain Alphabetic characters and no spaces. All letters in the name but the first one will be in lowercase.

You will then receive an email to the email address you supplied, in which there will be a completion link that will take you to the page where you choose your password and Challenge phrase. Once this step is complete, you may start the game by going back to the main webpage and clicking the 'Launch' image.

You must have the latest Java platform installed on your system to play Wurm Online. You may get Java here.

After starting Wurm you see the Login Screen, where one can enter his/her Username and Password. Below it is a checkbox, labeled "Play as Guest" which is enabled by default. Guest accounts are disabled, so uncheck it, then enter your name and password.

Upon logging in, your avatar will spawn (see Spawning) in a village called Newtown (NT) or The Landing. You spawn here the first time you play, and also when you die (there are some exceptions).

Do not steal in and around NT or the Landing. The guards will quickly make swiss cheese of your body.

If you get stuck in a large pit or cave and definitely cannot get out or if you find a bug/glitch Etc, type '/dev' to contact any of the GM's/Devs if they are online.
(See Helpful People). Please use this feature sparingly.

Movement and windows

See the page Interface and controls for an explanation of the various windows, bars and keys.

Getting started

A) There are 3 things that are considered essential to getting started:

 1. You need to start developing your cooking skills, go here: Guide To Cooking. Without food, your stamina bar will recharge extremely slowly and your actions will be limited.
 2. You need to build a house, go here: The "how do I build a house?" guide.
 3. You need a chest with a lock for secure storage, go here: Secure Storage
 • It is strongly recommended that you form or join a settlement, as cooperation is a key part of succeeding in any task.
 • Try to stay close to Newtown or The Landing until you get the hang of the game.

Death and dying

When you die you will loose 0.25 points from each skill, and 0.1 body strength. Note that the body strength currently only updates every 2nd death or with a client restart. With the exception of the newbie items you get when you first start, deeds, writs, and any items you may have in a Bag of Keeping (BoK) or Master Bag of Keeping (MBoK) your items will be on your corpse. As long as your items are in your corpse they are safe from other players. You'll need to find it to get them back. If the corpse has decayed, usually 24 hours, the items that were on it will be a pile of items on the ground where you died.

Also, you will be on a red and black screen with a little box in the middle, you will have to choose where you want to respawn. If you are dead and you cannot see the little box, type /respawn in your chat window.

While you have no deed, you will only be able to spawn at Newtown or The Landing. When you are the owner or citizen of a settlement, you will be able to spawn on that settlement. If that settlement has any allies you will be able to spawn there also if you die within 50 tiles of their center.

Only for basic accounts

After your strength level has decreased by 0.06 from your max strength ie:

20.00 to 19.94

19.50 to 19.44

(Approximately 6-7 deaths), You will be "Perma-Dead", meaning you will be un-able to play as that character any more. This applies to both the home server and the wild server. You can re-gain your strength by doing tasks such as Mining, Digging, or Woodcutting.

Servers and accounts

See Account Types for an explanation of the various accounts See Server Types for an explanation of the two server types.

Common problems of new players

Q) What's the difference between equip and activate?

A) An active item can be used to interact with the world around you, like cut a tree down with your small axe active. You equip a weapon which is then used automatically while in combat.

Q) How do I activate an item?

A) Double click on it. It will show up at the bottom of the inventory next to Active: This means that you can use the item for the tasks it is designed for.

Q) How do I equip a weapon?

A) Put it in your right hand. A second weapon can go in the left hand, but it is used less often, so put your main weapon in your right hand. When you do so, you will get an event message: 'You equip a short sword in your right hand'. You may also want to put a shield on your left arm (the left hand won't be used if you do), or armor on other bodyparts.

Q) Where do I get a pelt?

A) Pelts are a product from large rats, wild cats, mountain lions and dogs. In order to get one, you first have to find and kill one of those animals. then you have to use a butchering knife to butcher the corpse. If you are successful, you may get a pelt or meat and other assorted products. Alternatively, you may be lucky enough to find one for sale at a trader, or you might find a more experienced player willing to give or sell you a pelt.

Q) Can I starve to death or die of thirst?

A) No. If those bars are empty, you won't be able to perform some stamina draining actions (like mining) and your stamina will recharge very slowly. For more information, read Basic Knowledge.

Q) Where are the rest of my beginner tools?

A) When a new character is created, some of your equipment is automatically equipped. So, check your Torso and Hands. See inventory for further details.

Q) How do I make money?

A) Unlike other games you may have played, money is not gained from killing monsters, but rather from the sale of items you have crafted to other players and traders. You could also convert real-life 's(Euros) into ¤W¤'s(Wurm currency/silver) using the Wurm store...

Q) Why is it so dark? I can't see

A) * The problem may lie with your graphics card. Check to see if it features a gamma adjustment setting. If so turn it up very high. A) * The game features full day/night cycles and nighttimes are fairly dark. Time in Wurm is 8x real time so the darkness should only last 1 to 1.5 hours.

Q) How do I use a large anvil?

A) The large anvil is best used by carrying it in the inventory and making the lump active.

Q) How do I change game settings? How do I get better frame rates

A) On the log-in screen, there is an options button, you can change the settings there. More information on those settings can be found here

Q) What weapon should I create first?

A) A 10 quality short sword is good for killing rats and such.

Q) Why am I moving so slowly?

A) There are many factors that can reduce your speed:

 • Rough terrain
 • Carrying heavy loads
 • Wearing armour
 • Having low stamina
 • The "Hurting" status

Also, make sure the "climbing" toggle is switched off.

Q) What are percentages on creating items?

A) The percentage listed on the create menu is the chance that you will succeed, all modifiers taken into account. However, unlucky streaks can and will happen. Failing ten times in a row with 95% success rate is very bad luck, not a bug.

Q) Why wont my stamina regenerate?

This may be caused by lag or you having "Hungry" and/or "Thirsty" in your event box, or your Climbing switch is activated.
