Felled trees may still reveal direction
Trees now fall in any direction. Just look at [http://wurmonline.com/forum/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=643].

I believe that you can still tell direction with trees. some portion of the felled tree will always overlap the northwest corner of the tile the tree occupied. If less than a felled tree results, then the resulting log or wood scrap will appear on the northwest corner of the tile the tree occupied.
