Age plays an important role in two parts of Wurm:

Trees

When it comes to trees, age plays an important role in the yield of wood you will get from it. Tree and bush stages are: young, young, young, mature, mature, mature, mature-sprouting, old, old-sprouting, old, old-sprouting, very old, very old-sprouting, overaged, shriveled. To examine the age of a tree, right-click the tile the tree is on and examine it. The age will show up in the event window. The stage within each age will not show up. For example, a tree will only show Young in any of the three Young grown stages, not further information.

Cutting down a young, mature, or old and shriveled tree will yield a very low amount of wood and will be a waste of a tree. The optimum time to cut down a tree is when is is old, very old, or overaged, with overaged yielding the most wood. Some overaged trees can be pruned to return them to very old status but still yield a high amount of wood. Shriveled trees are lost and will yield very low useful wood and cannot be pruned to maintain a useful age. Size of the log or felled tree yielded will vary depending on the exact stage the tree is in.

Age Yield (Lumber or nut tree) Yield (Fruit tree) Sprout? Harvestable
Young 1.60, 3.20, or 4.80 kg log Wood scrap No No
Mature 11.20 kg log 2.00 or 2.40 kg log No Yes
Mature, sprouting 11.20 kg log 2.00 or 2.40 kg log Yes Yes
Old 106.67kg or 133.33 kg or felled tree 3.20 kg or 4.00 kg log No Yes
Old, sprouting 120kg or 146.67 kg felled tree 3.60 kg Yes Yes
Very old 160.00 kg felled tree 4.80 kg log No Yes
Very old, sprouting 173.33 kg felled tree 5.20 kg log Yes Yes
Overaged 186.67 kg felled tree 5.60 kg log No No [1]
Shriveled 4.80 kg log Wood scrap No No
  1. Prune the Overaged tree back to Very old to harvest it, during the right harvesting season.

Creatures

When it comes to the ages of creatures, the ages are: young, adolescent, mature, aged, old, and venerable. Creatures take several Wurm months to reach the venerable stage. They will eventually die of old age, but most species have extremely long lifespans. One huge spider was observed alive after over six months of real time.

The following table shows a good estimate of each stage's duration, based on some research and testing for horses, but could well be applicable for all creature types.

Age Duration in real life days Duration in Wurm weeks Duration in Wurm months
Young (foal) 3 days 4 weeks 1 months
Adolescent (foal) 10.5 days 12 weeks 3 months
Young 7 days 8 weeks 2 months
Adolescent 17.5 days 20 weeks 5 months
Mature 14 days 16 weeks 4 months
Aged 63 days 72 weeks 18 months
Old 35 days 40 weeks 10 months
Venerable 48-365 days 350-2920 weeks 80-671 months

Creature age affects its size and running speed, and older animals will have increased fighting capabilities. Aged animals have been reported to be the fastest around, especially aged huge spiders; anything younger or older will be slower than aged.
