As per the image above, if you were to stand on the center corner (right in the center of the green square) and examine the rectangular tile border north of you, the game would tell you that the "slope is 1 dirts steep away from you". If you were to stand in the top-middle, and looking south, the examine would say that "the slope is 1 dirts steep towards you".
== Dredging ==
a dredge is used to dig dirt from under the water level. Maximum depth is determined by your digging skill. You need a boat to dredge. When not in a boat you can only dredge to the same depth as you could dig with a shovel (2 dirt deep).
Improving the dredge uses carpentry tools and logs, but improves blacksmithing skill.
To use a dredge, while in a boat such as a Small Rowing boat, you simply float on top of the tile you want to dredge, and right click the tiles below and select "Dredge". Dredging will also make the tile you dredged steeper, just like normal digging, it's basicly the same. There is no specific boat to dredge from. There is no such boat as a "Dredger".
