I have learned much these past two weeks about the art of creating weapons. Day after day I purify the iron blades with my hammer and pelts, but this day was different.
"I think I see two venerable large spiders in one of the mines, who's up for some bug squishing?" I hear the mayor say. I am tired from a days worth of smithing but the thought of combat makes my blood flow a little faster. "I'll swing by and help you out." I say. I put away my tools and grab my armor and weapons. 'Which one should I bring this time?' I think to myself. I know how to use longswords, medium mauls and large mauls pretty well so it is a tough choice. I grab 'Big Baby' the large maul my friend collene has been enchanting for days. It feels cold to the touch and is surprisingly light to wield.
As Yancy and I descend in the cave he notices that the spiders are about 8 meters away, but the path is blocked by pure rock. He leaves, unwilling to mine though the rock for such unworthy prey, but I have been in my house all week and the thought of combat sends my senses tingling.
I spend the next hours mining though the hard rock. As I swing my pick deeper and deeper into the wall I start to think about the difference between a venerable spider and a young spider. Venerable animals have walked our planet for quite some time and are skilled at combat, and are quite a bit larger than their younger brethren. I have slayed a champion troll though, I think to myself, so two venerable spiders will be a walk in the park for me. Suddenly the wall crumbles before me and shards spray in all direction, I shield my face and feel the hard rock cut my body. I hear a shriek and see the cause of the disturbance, the two spiders have broken through the wall I just weakened and were now sprinting towards me...
I grab my large maul off of the ground and jump over one of the spiders just barely missing its bite, as I am in the air I swing my maul above my head and send it crashing down towards its target but barely miss as it scurries out of the way. I turn to face the second foe just barely dodging one of its claws as it come screaming towards my face. I spin around and use the momentum to send my maul crashing upon it and Big Baby connects with a sickening CRACK and instantly 3 of the spiders legs are broken, while the affected area turns to ice. The first spider, probably angered at seeing it's friend hurt, rushes at me in a frenzy and slashes my arm open. I dash to the side and feel the blood drip down my side, but in the heat of the battle I feel no pain. The first spider comes at me again and again and I barely dodge its many blows, its claws coming millimeters from my skin. I swing my maul around again to bring about the full force of my furry but the spider is too quick and both it and it's friend retreat around the corner.
I check my body for wound and realize that I am quite beaten up. My chest is cut and my arm is bleeding profusely. I turn to leave the cave but as I take a step towards the light I hear a terrible screech and one of the spiders is upon me. I focus what is left of my strength and I leap over the spider, maul in hand, and send all of my rage and hatred upon my enemy and with a spat the spider is crushed beneath my mighty maul. Not even taking time to wipe what is left of my foe off of my armor I slowly creep around the corner and see the other spider. Thinking it is attempting to ambush me I inch towards and and with a thunderous roar I use the last of my strength and sprint towards the large monster. It doesn't move and as I get closer I notice there is a pool of blood underneath it. I take another step closer and see the three broken legs mangled and bleeding still. This spider has died of its previous wounds. I sigh a breath of relief and turn to leave.
I slowly climb out of the cave and crawl back to my house to bandage myself with cotton and use some of the natural healing covers I had made weeks ago. After a few hours rest I feel good as new and go back to the cave to butcher my foes for meat. The butchering rewards me with nothing but I already have my rewards, some new battle scars and another story to tell my brothers. Big baby has done well, I think I will bring her with me on many a hunting trip and adventure.
