As of April 2012:
0.5 kg of lye is used for each attempt to create a leather.
Each leather is 3kg.
Under good conditions a 12kg hide can yield 4 leathers at the cost of 0.2 kg lye.

Hides are heavy, and their weight can slow you down while hunting. You can overcome this by creating [[leather]] out of them on the spot by bringing [[lye]] with you. Leather is much lower weight than hides.
