The reed pen can hold 0.01kg of liquid, preferably . The liquid must be [[black ink]] or [[dye]] to [[Papyrus sheet#Inscribing|writeon papyrus]] . All 0.01kg of ink in the pen are used even if you abort writing on the papyrussheet.  The number of letters you can write on a sheet of papyrus is 121 + (pen QL * 2). Decimals are counted, so a 40.50ql pen allows one more letter than a 40.49ql pen.
