− | ==== January 6th 2013 - Sacking of Thorin's Gate ====
| |
| | | |
− | Thorin's Gate is a deed located east of the HOTA area, its walls were demolished and the settlement sacked by a medium sized group of MR fighters.
| + | == My Recounts from Chaos == |
| | | |
− | As the MR raiders were sailing away, its mayor Tosti logged in. The MR raiders immediately turned their boats around and engaged Tosti. Unfortunately, Tosti retreated into a panic room after a brief fight lasting only a few seconds. | + | As a player who has had a few hiatuses from Chaos, everytime I return I always find it fascinating how methods/fighting styles/tactics have changed and evolved over time. I think it is important to document these as well as major events so that newer players can look back and understand the history of the game and how it's evolved with the ingenuity of players and introduction of new features and changes to the mechanics. |
| | | |
| + | === June 3rd, 2013 - The first time I experienced the Orb of Doom === |
| | | |
| + | On this day, the Empire of Mol Rehan under the leadership of Nadroj organised for a tower bash outside of the JK deed of The Hot Gate. This was one part of a major EMR offensive in the east intended to push JK out of the Sparta peninsula and back into their homeland. |
| | | |
− | ==== January 12th 2013 - The 12/01 Sea Raid ====
| + | Sparta was an old deed on Chaos (built on old mechanics which were no longer possible and became its downfall - I'll explain further later on). It was renowned by EMR for its Russian occupants, in particular a player named fsbkun whom many EMR members viewed as being a particularly strong player with high archery and fletching skill and Shield of the Gone (SOTG wasn't as common at the time as it is today). The buffer zone between Sparta and Kratos (The stronghold housing the EMR fighting force in the east) was the JKC deed of The Hot Gate, essentially a wall deed west/east blocking EMR from advancing further north by land. |
| | | |
− | The January 12th Sea Raid was a raid conducted by a large MR raiding group from 1 Knarr in North East chaos, deep in JK territory. | + | June 3rd, 2013 - Timeline of events: |
| + | * A contingent of approximately 15 EMR struck at The Hot Gate with the main goal of bashing a tower directly in front and to provoke a JKC counterattack. |
| + | * JKC mustered an almost equally strong force to rival EMR soon after. |
| + | * Kix activated the Orb of Doom timer and charged into the EMR group, only a few EMR players had noticed the Orb of Doom in Events tab. |
| + | * "KIX HAS THE ORB OF DOOM!!!" Demondan shouted. Seconds later, 1/3 of the EMR group was hit with the Orb of Doom including myself. I was climbing up a hill at the time I was hit. I went from 80% health down to 1% and fell off... fortunately into a mine at the base of the hill. Had the base of the hill not had an open mine, I would've died. |
| + | * After the Orb of Doom struck, JKC charged and a skirmish ensued almost leading to the death of Nadroj whose computer had frozen 1 tile off deed. He was wielding the Sword of Magranon. |
| + | * The tower was bashed in the end and both sides disengaged. Months later, The Hot Gate would eventually fall and JK forces withdrew their defense back to Sparta. |
| | | |
− | It concluded with the death of several JK citizens and fighters while MR suffered no casualties of their own.
| |
| | | |
− | JK casualties included: Lockehalfblood, Flamell, Darknessll, and Platon
| + | === March 23rd, 2014 - The fall of Sparta === |
| | | |
| + | As mentioned above in the June 3rd 2013 recount, Sparta was a very old JK deed on Chaos. Although the deed was well defended and housed a relatively large, skilled and active russian playerbase, the outer dirt walls and their longhouses were built on a slope, spiraling around the deed. Many years ago, building houses on slopes was possible however with the introduction of multi-level building, this feature was removed and the developers chose to phase out sloped buildings by making them irreparable. |
| | | |
| + | For whatever reason, Sparta did not replace their slope buildings with a flat longhouses on a level dirtwall. I strongly believe the decision to retain their sloped longhouses lead to their downfall as it took away their ability to repair the longhouses and repel the EMR raid on March 23rd 2014. |
| | | |
− | ==== January 29th 2013 - Border Skirmish at Sparta ====
| + | On this day, a few months after JKC pulled back from The Hot Gate, they heavily fortified the south side of Sparta. To circumvent this, EMR loaded up 4 full knarrs of raiders, sailed around Sparta and attacked it from the north. In most circumstanced, this would've been a risky endeavour as it meant the attacking force would be stranded with sea as their only means of escape but this risk was mitigated by the overwhelming manpower of the EMR raid force which was in excess of 40 players initially and later joined by more who arrived by land or in sailboats. |
| | | |
− | During the eve of January 29th 2013, Emoo and Kharm had built a house and mine up against the perimeter of the double JK deeds of Sparta & Trollmound in Eastern Chaos. The objective was to lure Sparta's citizens into a fight while a supporting contingent of MR fighters from Kratos waited nearby as reinforcements.
| + | JKC responded to the attack by teleporting players into Sparta, fighting back from their safe mine (The reinforced mine popped by Rolf sparking controversy - I'll explain later). |
| | | |
− | Unbeknownst to Kratos at the time, Sparta had sent out an alert to their alliance requesting support. This request for support was answered by Davy, Norad, Thornbush and Padremaronno who sailed across the bay in a knarr.
| + | Blinksyrevived accidentally fell off a slope and was killed by JK - He was carrying the Sword of Magranon. |
| | | |
− | Fortunately, the supporting MR fighters had grown suspicious as to why Sparta's citizens would not leave their deed despite outnumbering Kharm and Emoo. Believing that something was amiss, The supporting MR fighters scouted ahead and became aware of the presence of JK reinforcements sailing towards Sparta.
| + | At some point while EMR was digging down the dirt wall, a sizable group of JKC fighters on horseback suddenly appeared from the North. |
| | | |
− | When the JK reinforcements arrived, Strmesko sallied out of Sparta/Trollmound and together with the JK reinforcements, engaged Emoo and Kharm, meanwhile Roman and the rest of the MR reinforcements (Demondan, Red, Nikkunikku, Zivirt) came out of hiding and joined in the fray within a minute.
| + | "THEY'RE NORTH OF US!!", somebody shouted into Mumble (The voicechat program we used). |
| | | |
− | Lancelot joined the fight much later on as an additional MR fighter.
| + | Almost immediately, every single EMR at Sparta logged in and scuttled out of their tunnel/mine or building and faced north. |
| | | |
− | From JK; Norad, Padremaronno and Strmesko were killed.
| + | I saw the JKC group ride within 30 tiles of Sparta before turning around and fleeing in terror after realising the EMR group outnumbered them about 3-4 times. The JKC group was volleyed by EMR as they tried to escape with chased down and killed in a mine leading to a coastal JK deed called Rats Point. After this last fight, all remaining JKC had teleported back to the north and there was no more JKC resistance at Sparta. |
| | | |
− | MR's only casualty was Kharm who was killed by Thornbush's fire pillar.
| |
| | | |
− | Roman gained the Toys affinity for his kill on Strmesko
| + | === March 24th, 2014 - The Sparta Safe-Mine Incident === |
| | | |
− | In the end, this was a minor victory for Kratos and the Empire of Mol-Rehan.
| + | * [10:03:47] You enter Want Win Beg Rolf. |
| | | |
| + | It obviously wasn't common knowledge at the time but you can removed reinforced cave walls with the Disintegrate spell. Prior to this discovery, most deeds on Chaos would have a vault/safe-mine near their token. In the event the deed was breached, valuables which could not be safely evacuated would be deposited into the vault. The entrance tunnel would then be collapsed and reinforced, sealing the valuables inside. |
| | | |
− | Video from Jenn-Kellon perspective: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BorcyAFTKI
| + | During the Sparta raid, JKC moved a lot of valuables into the safe mine at Sparta, collapsed and reinforced the entrance. When EMR reached the safe mine, they attempted to disintegrate the tile. The chances of success at the time were extremely small, if I recall correctly it was calculated to be something around 1% success rate. |
| | | |
| + | When EMR succeeded in disintegrating the tile, it gave the event message that the cast was successful but the tile remained reinforced. Rolf was immediately contacted by several members of the EMR leadership and within 30 minutes, he appeared in local at Sparta. |
| | | |
| + | After a few minutes, Rolf determined that the ability to create a fully-sealed vault was unintended, that the successful disintegrate spell not removing reinforcement was a bug and he promptly popped the tile allowing EMR access into the Sparta safe mine. |
| | | |
− | ==== February 13th 2013 - The Southern Sea Campaign I ====
| + | Rolf's involvement drew widespread condemnation from the Wurm community as he had traditionally maintained zero-involvement in these types of affairs, particularly those surrounding Chaos and PVP. |
− | | |
− | The campaign in the Southern Sea was a series of repeated raids against hostile deeds in the South East quarter of Chaos.
| |
− | | |
− | Seizing total control of the South East quarter of Chaos is vital for MR expansion and power.
| |
− | | |
− | Two deeds were primary targets, however a third Blacklight soon became a priority target after it appeared in close proximity to an MR Deed.
| |
− | | |
− | * Tomorrowland - Owned by Norad, a Jenn-Kellon player.
| |
− | * Desire Rock - Located next to Tomorrowland and a supporter of Jenn-Kellon
| |
− | * Dark Spawn - Owned by Darkmalice who managed to create this deed under the Horde Of The Summoned and convert a large group of freedom players to Libila, the evil goddess in Wurm.
| |
− | | |
− | The campaign was a total MR victory which ended in the destruction, drain and disbandment of Tomorrowland, Desire Rock and Dark Spawn. All players associated with Dark Spawn were also routed by a passing MR sea patrol following the death of their leader, Darkmalice. The surviving Dark Spawn members fled back to The Freedom Isles from whence they came as their comrades were killed off one by one.
| |
− | | |
− | MR suffered no casualties during any of the engagements and deed drains.
| |
− | | |
− | | |
− | | |
− | ==== February 18th 2013 - The Russian Empire ====
| |
− | | |
− | On the eve of February 18th, a small scouting team of four assembled at Kratos for a mission at The Russian Empire, a fortified deed situated adjacent to Hunting Lodge, the default Freedom Isles spawn in Chaos.
| |
− | | |
− | The primary objective of the mission was to scout The Russian Empire and determine the strength of the deed and its defences with a secondary objective to raid it if it were deemed possible.
| |
− | | |
− | The Russian Empire (although protected by a tall stone wall, 7 templars and a guard tower) proved to have extremely inadequate defences from within.
| |
− | | |
− | The entire deed was sacked and token drained by Roman, Demondan, Nikkunikku and Frostbite.
| |
− | | |
− | | |
− | | |
− | ==== March 2nd 2013 - Attack on Sparta ====
| |
− | | |
− | On the morning of March 2nd 2013, a large army of 30 MR fighters assembled at Kratos. Their objective was the destruction of Sparta.
| |
− | | |
− | Upon approaching Sparta, the army was spotted by a JK freedom alt which alerted JK of the presence of MR. The attack continued but unfortunately catapults were bugged and could not be used to break into Sparta and Trollmound (Ammo we catapulted would not hit the target, gave no message as to whether it hit or miss, would not register damage and sometimes the ammo fired would completely disappear).
| |
− | | |
− | Nevertheless, MR caused distress for the JK defenders and put on a show of force which brought Gavin, the king of JK out of Kyara and into the combat.
| |
− | | |
− | In the ensuing combat, two JK nobles were killed.
| |
− | * Norad the Royal Lover was killed while attempting to flee.
| |
− | * Potissimus the Royal Avenger was too over-confident, charging alone towards MR and was subsequently killed by an MR catapult crew.
| |
− | | |
− | On the other hand, MR suffered two casualties of their own:
| |
− | * Knightirl was killed by archery fire while attacking the settlement of Trollmound.
| |
− | * Wiiol was the only casualty from the catapult crew. He was killed defending the crew against JK fighters and archers.
| |
− | | |
− | | |
− | | |
− | ==== March 13th 2013 - The Black Light Conflict ====
| |
− | | |
− | Following the return of the Horde of The Summoned to Chaos, many players converted to Libila lured by its much sought-after spells.
| |
− | | |
− | A group of Blacklight players came to the attention of MR when one of them (Shakys) built up a small island deed south of The Shroud (within extremely close promixity of an MR deed) and declared himself Emperor of Horde of the Summoned.
| |
− | | |
− | Although MR at the time wished to remain neutral to Black Lighters, Shakys declared that he would attack MR, that there was no NAP (Non-aggression pact) and then engaged an MR envoy who approached them to pursue peace talks straining the relationship between MR and BL. The now BL Emperor Shakys (playing on Aramisii) and noble Kaineomaine were killed by a group of MR sailors as they tried to pursue the fleeing MR envoy through open water.
| |
− | | |
− | On the morning of March 13th: Roman, Zivirt, Noom, Kharm, Motasolo, Moghedien raced to The Black Light in defence of an MR tower which was being conquered. When they arrived, they discovered that the MR tower was attacked by BL players. Such action would subsequently lead to open-warfare between the two kingdoms.
| |
− | | |
− | That same night, Roman, Emoo, Zivirt, Noom, Nikkunikku, Motasolo, Nadroj, Kamikazifly, Demondan, Camobeast and Wirano catapulted into and drained the BL Capital of Bloody Waters.
| |
− | | |
− | After several more raids over a few nights, Aramisii abdicated his alt, Shakys from the seat of Emperor of HOTS and fled to Jenn Kellon.
| |

− | ==== March 21st 2013 - Recharging The Crown of Might ====
| |
− | | |
− | A small brave MR party consisting of Roman, Zivirt, Noom, Hughmyron and Demondan under the cover of darkness, traveled deep into Jenn-Kellon territory and against overwhelming numbers managed to recharge the Crown of Might before fleeing the area.
| |
− | | |
− | Norad was killed once again. This time he was clumsily afk'd near the White Light.
| |
− | | |
− | | |

| |
− | | |
− | This is a week long operation that Roman personally organised and taken full responsibility of. It is still ongoing.
| |
− | | |
− | | |
− | | |
− | ==== March 30th 2013 - The destruction of League Of Gentlemen ====
| |
− | | |
− | League of Gentlemen is a deed built upon the abandoned site of Hammerfell, an old JK fortress. Some of the players who helped design and build hammer have since defected to MR. On this date, a large, experienced army of Mol Rehan fighters amassed upon LoG to challenge Norad's claim that his new deed of LoG was impenetrable.
| |
− | | |
− | Within a few hours of arriving on the walls of LoG, Mol Rehan forces had completely leveled the northern wall, looted and drained the entire deed. The defences built by Norad proved to be futile, riddled with weak points throughout the entire deed and several gates left carelessly unlocked.
| |
− | | |
− | Although Mortal, a JK villager residing in LoG was online, he abandoned his post and fled after securing whatever valuables he could hold onto.
| |
− | | |
− | Candlepack was the only JK casualty. He decided to commit suicide rather than fight with Roman, giving up his armour set, weapon and items.
| |
− | | |
− | Deathangel was also spotted by MR forces traveling towards LoG but fled after being pursued by a quick response team.
| |
− | | |
− | Meanwhile, other MR forces secured victory for the Empire of Mol Rehan in the HOTA.
| |
− | | |
− | * The settlement of The League Of Gentlemen has just been disbanded by Norad. (March 31st, 2013)
| |
− | | |
− | | |
− | | |
− | === May 4th 2013 - JK Coastline ===
| |
− | | |
− | May 4th marked the day in which up to 20 MR fighters embarked on a journey to Northern Chaos. The target was any and every JK deed they'd come across.
| |
− | | |
− | The first hit was on Gestalt (Formerly known as Capsalot). Gestalt is a fortified hilltop deed with double-walls located only 2mins ride from the JK Capital, Kyara.
| |
− | | |
− | Within 40 minutes, Gestalt had been broken into, drained and looted.
| |
− | | |
− | With Gestalt out of the way, the MR forces progressed further west along the coast, deeper into JK territory when they encountered Vandle in local who was at a deed (Trididell) previously unknown to MR. According to intel, Trididell was a JK deed belonging to a 'friend' of MR, Aramisii. Aramisii has had previous run-ins with MR a few months ago when he was Horde of the Summoned.
| |
− | | |
− | While raiding Trididell, several alts from the deed logged in, assuming to be picking up loot and logging off.
| |
− | | |
− | When MR forces broke into Trididell and began raiding the deed, the deed owner Jak logged in and started to destroy writs. Confused, MR forces continued to raid and ignored Jak believing that he was aiding us though we were unsure as to who he was.
| |
− | | |
− | When Trididell had been drained and looted, MR forces headed home, making 1 quick stop at Rat Point to drain a final JK deed.
| |
− | | |
− | All in all, 3 deeds were drained by this force. JK offered no resistance despite being so close to their capital and being prime time for their European players on a weekend.
| |
− | | |
− | Vandle, Wtfer and Norad were all spotted in local during this trip but fled or logged off.

| + | In my opinion, perhaps the greatest insult to injury was the level of compensation Rolf offered to the Sparta residents. A wagon with a minimal quantity of glimmersteel and adamantite moonmetal with the rare condition. Minimal as in not even enough to make a weapon out of it. While I don't question the act of giving compensation, I think the value of it showed how out of touch Rolf was with the game. |

Summary
Country of Origin:
I'm an Australian Wurm Online player living mainly on the Freedom Isles servers with occasional time spent on Chaos.
I have a huge interest in hunting and slaying uniques and will (time permitting) try my best to always attend slayings.

My Recounts from Chaos
As a player who has had a few hiatuses from Chaos, everytime I return I always find it fascinating how methods/fighting styles/tactics have changed and evolved over time. I think it is important to document these as well as major events so that newer players can look back and understand the history of the game and how it's evolved with the ingenuity of players and introduction of new features and changes to the mechanics.
June 3rd, 2013 - The first time I experienced the Orb of Doom
On this day, the Empire of Mol Rehan under the leadership of Nadroj organised for a tower bash outside of the JK deed of The Hot Gate. This was one part of a major EMR offensive in the east intended to push JK out of the Sparta peninsula and back into their homeland.
Sparta was an old deed on Chaos (built on old mechanics which were no longer possible and became its downfall - I'll explain further later on).
June 3rd, 2013 - Timeline of events:
- A contingent of approximately 15 EMR struck at The Hot Gate with the main goal of bashing a tower directly in front and to provoke a JKC counterattack.
- JKC mustered an almost equally strong force to rival EMR soon after.
- Kix activated the Orb of Doom timer and charged into the EMR group, only a few EMR players had noticed the Orb of Doom in Events tab.
- "KIX HAS THE ORB OF DOOM!!!" Demondan shouted.
- After the Orb of Doom struck, JKC charged and a skirmish ensued almost leading to the death of Nadroj whose computer had frozen 1 tile off deed. He was wielding the Sword of Magranon.
- The tower was bashed in the end and both sides disengaged. Months later, The Hot Gate would eventually fall and JK forces withdrew their defense back to Sparta.
March 23rd, 2014 - The fall of Sparta
As mentioned above in the June 3rd 2013 recount, Sparta was a very old JK deed on Chaos.
For whatever reason, Sparta did not replace their slope buildings with a flat longhouses on a level dirtwall. I strongly believe the decision to retain their sloped longhouses lead to their downfall as it took away their ability to repair the longhouses and repel the EMR raid on March 23rd 2014.
On this day, a few months after JKC pulled back from The Hot Gate, they heavily fortified the south side of Sparta.
JKC responded to the attack by teleporting players into Sparta, fighting back from their safe mine (The reinforced mine popped by Rolf sparking controversy - I'll explain later).
Blinksyrevived accidentally fell off a slope and was killed by JK - He was carrying the Sword of Magranon.
At some point while EMR was digging down the dirt wall, a sizable group of JKC fighters on horseback suddenly appeared from the North.
"THEY'RE NORTH OF US!!", somebody shouted into Mumble (The voicechat program we used).
Almost immediately, every single EMR at Sparta logged in and scuttled out of their tunnel/mine or building and faced north.
I saw the JKC group ride within 30 tiles of Sparta before turning around and fleeing in terror after realising the EMR group outnumbered them about 3-4 times. The JKC group was volleyed by EMR as they tried to escape with chased down and killed in a mine leading to a coastal JK deed called Rats Point. After this last fight, all remaining JKC had teleported back to the north and there was no more JKC resistance at Sparta.
March 24th, 2014 - The Sparta Safe-Mine Incident
- [10:03:47] You enter Want Win Beg Rolf.
It obviously wasn't common knowledge at the time but you can removed reinforced cave walls with the Disintegrate spell. Prior to this discovery, most deeds on Chaos would have a vault/safe-mine near their token. In the event the deed was breached, valuables which could not be safely evacuated would be deposited into the vault. The entrance tunnel would then be collapsed and reinforced, sealing the valuables inside.
During the Sparta raid, JKC moved a lot of valuables into the safe mine at Sparta, collapsed and reinforced the entrance. When EMR reached the safe mine, they attempted to disintegrate the tile. The chances of success at the time were extremely small, if I recall correctly it was calculated to be something around 1% success rate.
When EMR succeeded in disintegrating the tile, it gave the event message that the cast was successful but the tile remained reinforced. Rolf was immediately contacted by several members of the EMR leadership and within 30 minutes, he appeared in local at Sparta.
After a few minutes, Rolf determined that the ability to create a fully-sealed vault was unintended, that the successful disintegrate spell not removing reinforcement was a bug and he promptly popped the tile allowing EMR access into the Sparta safe mine.
Rolf's involvement drew widespread condemnation from the Wurm community as he had traditionally maintained zero-involvement in these types of affairs, particularly those surrounding Chaos and PVP.
In my opinion, perhaps the greatest insult to injury was the level of compensation Rolf offered to the Sparta residents. A wagon with a minimal quantity of glimmersteel and adamantite moonmetal with the rare condition. Minimal as in not even enough to make a weapon out of it. While I don't question the act of giving compensation, I think the value of it showed how out of touch Rolf was with the game.
