Newtown is the capital of Jenn-Kellon Kingdom. It is your home when you start the game, and your character spawns by the settlement token. From there you can see the White Light, home of of Three Gods. Newtown is located South East of the White Light.
Other useful information
The mayor of Newtown is Notch and he is the founder of it also.
