There's two ways to train fighting, the safe way and the dangerous way:
+
Fighting
I recommend using the safe way until around 10 fighting, then go off hunting.
+
The fighting system in wurm makes use of a term called 'Combat Rating(CR)'.
 +
This is value for which each oponents difficulty is based. You gain 2CR per 10 overall fight skill(Pve) and then additional CR depending on wether you have the height advantage, are mounted on an animal, or lose some if not at optimal range to the target or on un-even ground.

Safe way
Create a practice doll and equip a shaft or other weapon.

If you use a weapon then you should use one that is close to 1.00 ql or you will quickly destroy the doll.
+
The most suggested and more practical way for a begginer player to train their for skill is as follows:

Attack the doll, repairing it whenever its damage gets to 20.
+
Create a practice doll and equip a shaft and right click the practice doll and select 'practice'. This will make you start to attack the doll and periodically increase your overall fighting skill. This is not immensly fast, and will only work till you reach 20 Fighting.

 +
Make a weapon, preferably a longsword. This will require access to a forge and the related equipment, but it is advisable to start off with a longsword to defend yourself first, but..you can always use the short start you received at the tutorial if you wish.
 +
Weaponsmithing is not an easy skill, it is advisable to ask if someone can provide you with one. You can generall make a 15ql sword with 10 weaponsmithing.

An alternative is to breed cattle and/or horses and kill them off slowly for skill gain. You can back off from horses and cattle in order to safely bandage using cotton or rags.
+
Train your selected weapon skill, the easiest way to train your weapon skill is to simply go out and chop down alot of tree's with it. This will work until 20 weapon skill. Only bladed weapons apply for this method (as in no mauls, and the exception of a short sword), any other weapon must be trained through combat with other creatures.

Don't forget to bandage your prey for first aid skill!
+
Create your equipment The easiest and simplest armour type available to make in wurm is the cloth armour. Its light, and provides some protection but not a huge amount. It would be suitable as your first set but it would be advisable to move up to Leather Armour or Studded Leather Armour as soon as you can. You can generally imp cloth/leather armour to 20ql with 10 in the related skill.

You won't gain much overall fighting skill that way, but it is good to gain fighting subskill and maybe weapon skill.
+
If you have followed the above guide, you should now have 20 overall fighting skill, 20 weapon skill, a set of armour (of at least 20ql) and a weapon (of at least 15ql) to call your own, and the knowledge of how to maintain them. These skills will allow you to fight upto at least a Bear.

Dangerous (but a heck of a lot more fun) way
+
Once you have gone through the above guide, and wish to continue training fighting, then the following section would be advisable.

Go hunting.  That's it. Just go hunting.  You first want to try hunting down simple farm animals such as pigs, pheasants, roosters, bulls, cows, etc.  Even wild cats work at the start.
+
The Mount A Mount is an animal which is leadable by rope and can be ridden on for increased movement speed, or in this case a boost in Combat Rating. Using a Mount effectivly gives you an additional 10 Fightin Skill (2CR) and makes fighting alot easier, a good example in this case is that using a Mount would allow you to kill a Scorpion with a reasonable amount of Health left afterwards.

At around 10 fighting you want to get some leg protection and hunt down wolves. The wolves aim for the legs a lot, so leg protection will save you health in the end.
+
Use a Shield A Shield in wurm allows you to block incoming attacks from creatures, how often being based upon your Skill in the type of Shield you have chosen to use. The easiest way to train the shield is to gather a number(2-3) of pigs or another weak animal and attack them all at once. This method will allow you to reach 20 Shield Skill with general ease, after that its advisable to use a penned Rat.

Pheasants in particular can make an excellent training enemy as they will not follow you when you back away from the fight, giving you time to heal and regain stamina if necessary, especially if fighting with very low QL weapons for the skill gain.
+
DO NOT turn your back on the enemy In Wurm, there is a  penalty to your chance to parry, dodge or avoid an incoming attack from an enemy if you turn your back, and to a lesser degree from the sides. If you are fighting something, you want to have it facing you. Later on when you feel more confident in your fighting abilities you may wish to use this penalty against the creatures you face, all things in wurm must obey the penalty so if you can make use of it to your benefit, do so.

Try to bring cotton, rags or some other form of cloth to heal yourself with.
+
Raise your skills efficiently There are several skill levels which are important to aim for in regards to fighting related skills. As you know, every 10 Fight skill you gain 2 CR, so a player with 19 fight skill is no different to a fighter with 10, always go for the rounded number.

Melee weapons
+
Other skill levels worth mentioning are:

Melee weapons can be safely trained up to 20 in that respective weapon.
+
30 and 50 weapon skill: At 30 and 50 weapon skill you will gain 1 second off your attack timer, and an increase in the damage you deal with the weapon in question aswell as the chance to hit.

All melee weapons, including mauls and clubs, can be used on practice dolls.
+
40 skill in parryable weapons/shields: Untill you hit 40 skill in a parryable weapon/shield, you cannot parry while you move. This makes you vulnerable when moving and as such you can suffer greatly while retreating from a fight. Non parry-able weapons are the Axe line and Sycthe.

Additionally, both axes and swords (exception: shortsword) can be used to safely hack at trees for skill up to 20. Skill beyond 20 requires usage of these weapons in actual fighting.

The usage of weapons on dolls can inflict heavy damage on both doll and weapon. Practice dolls over 50ql are recomended.

Using axes and mauls gives body strength. Swords give body control.

Fighting

The fighting system in wurm makes use of a term called 'Combat Rating(CR)'. This is value for which each oponents difficulty is based. You gain 2CR per 10 overall fight skill(Pve) and then additional CR depending on wether you have the height advantage, are mounted on an animal, or lose some if not at optimal range to the target or on un-even ground.

How to Train your Fighting

The most suggested and more practical way for a begginer player to train their for skill is as follows:

Create a practice doll and equip a shaft and right click the practice doll and select 'practice'. This will make you start to attack the doll and periodically increase your overall fighting skill. This is not immensly fast, and will only work till you reach 20 Fighting.

Make a weapon, preferably a longsword. This will require access to a forge and the related equipment, but it is advisable to start off with a longsword to defend yourself first, but..you can always use the short start you received at the tutorial if you wish. Weaponsmithing is not an easy skill, it is advisable to ask if someone can provide you with one. You can generall make a 15ql sword with 10 weaponsmithing.

Tips to further help Fighing

Once you have gone through the above guide, and wish to continue training fighting, then the following section would be advisable.

Raise your skills efficiently There are several skill levels which are important to aim for in regards to fighting related skills. As you know, every 10 Fight skill you gain 2 CR, so a player with 19 fight skill is no different to a fighter with 10, always go for the rounded number.

Other skill levels worth mentioning are:

Well, I hope this guide has helped you. Be sure to upgrade your Equipment/Weapons whenever possible, and make 70 fighting your long term goal. Have fun in the wilderness!
