I believe that you can still tell direction with trees. some portion of the felled tree will always overlap the northwest corner of the tile the tree occupied. If less than a felled tree results, then the resulting log or wood scrap will appear on the northwest corner of the tile the tree occupied. It's much easier to just use planets and sun for that, don't encourage deforestation. :)
