A Canal may be a channel of water passing through high dirt or through a mine tunnel, allowing the passage of ships.
Types of canal
Dirt
A dirt canal is created by digging and dredging a uniform channel through an area of land where the bottom section of the canal is beneath water.

Cave
A cave canal is created by mining a uniform channel through an area of rock or mountain where the bottom section of the canal is beneath water.
Look for a rock tile that is approximately two-thirds below the waterline and prepare it. Needing to dredge around such a tile is not unusual, especially to make the surrounding terrain look natural. The important thing is not to tunnel the ship entrance from the surface, but create an exit from within. This leaves an opening deep and tall enough to sail through.
Methods ranging from making alternative entries (for foot or horse passage) to making temporary openings and collapsing them with a orbs or strongwall. Ensure that the cave floor is deep and flat enough inside and then mine straight out. Having a way to restore stamina is handy to avoid drowning whilst working in water.
If the entrance turns out unfavourable simply collapse the tile using a shaker orb or strongwall and try again. A Sculpting wand may also prove helpful.
Note: You can tunnel at 0 stamina while climbing but a boat close by for stamina regain is recommended as its slow.
