These are the different types of staircases that can be built in game. Some staircases built where the top or bottom would share a border with a door or wall may not allow movement to neighboring tiles.

To build a staircase activate a hammer or mallet and right click the tile that contains a finished floor. Select Plan and a staircase type.

Note: On-ground floor paving(like Floor board) does not count as the finished floor, you actually have to use Plan -> Floor below, finish the floor and then build stairs on it. After which you can remove the floor that was made.
