Crops can be harvested at any time after the first growth level, but harvesting too early or too late results in a bad crop. Level 20 farmers can determine the optimal height by examining a field. It is also possible to use a small barrel. When a field reaches optimal height it will be the same height as the small barrel, or a little taller. The color of the field is also possible marker, as it changes to a yellowish-green when ripe. Not recommended in the dark. smiley

The maximum slope on which you can sow seeds is 8; attempting to sow seeds on a greater slope results in a message "The ground is not flat enough for crops to grow. You need to flatten it first". The slope does not appear to effect growth speed or crop quality.

Anyone can verify if a field needs tending. "The crops grow steadily" means the field is in order, while "It could use a touch from the rake or some other farming tool" means it must be tidied with a rake. If the description mentions "rotting old weeds", the field is overgrown and can no longer be harvested.

Level 10 farmers can determine which type of crop is growing in a field, except at the lowest growth level ("freshly sown").

Farming can be a difficult skill to start, in the sense that getting your hands on the seeds as a new player can be extremely time consuming.

So, unless you can buy or are in a village that will provide you with seeds, you are almost wasting your time to think about starting Farming until you have at least 10, probably nearer 15 Botany.

You want a good few tiles fenced off for your farm with either a gate or a gatehouse so that noone can just walk in and Farm or Harvest your crops. I started with a 48 tile enclosure and it took me about two weeks to get my Farming skill to 13 after starting with about 30 seeds that I bought from a seed Merchant in NT.

Once you have sown your seeds, you want to Farm the tile at least once every real day. You will raise your skill more quickly if you spend more time Farm'ing each farmable tile.

Your crops should ripen in about three days but this is not precise. Each tile will grow at a different rate and if you sow 10 seeds at the same time then those ten tiles may ripen indiviually in 2-4 days. 3 days does seem to be about the average though with the tiles needing to be harvested within about 8 hours of becoming ripe.

Your crops will be ripe when the top of the crop, when groomed) is exactly level with the top of a Small Barrel placed in the tile.

If you Harvest early you will get reduced yield and if you Harvest late you will get reduced yield. If you are only get one potato or whatever anyway then you will get nothing.

At higher skill levels you "should" be able to harvest early or late withoput losing all of your crop. (I cannot confirm that personally yet but it seems to be the general opinion).

After you harvest you should Sow the result right back into the tile. You get Farming skill for Harvest'ing and Sow'ing and you will get Farming skill in the following days when you tend the crop and then re-harvest it.

At around 10, I was getting one field in ten giving me back more than one unit of crop.

From 14.0 to 14.67 I harvested around 12 potato fields and 5 of those gave increased yield.

So far, at 14.67 I have only had higher yields from potato fields.

Your best bet is to assume that you will not be making any real crop gain from your Farming until your skill is at 15.

In other words, up to that point all your Farming will be very much sowing one seed get one seed back.

With a 50 tile farm you will get roughly 1 point of farming per day if you tend your fields twice a day. Takes about 10 mins to tend 40 tiles with a QL 10 Rake.

As your skill level improves yield increases from 1 through 3 and 4 to 6 with 6 being achievable at around skill level 45.

My first high yield Wemp Field at 17.46 (did not have any ready at lower farming levels).

Description

The farming skill covers cultivating fields, sowing seeds, tending the crops, and harvesting the produce.

Tools Used

  • Rake - for farming
  • Scythe - for harvesting wheat, barley, oat and rye
    • No tool is required when harvesting any of the other crops.
  • Large planter - for growing below ground or for aesthetics. A planter is required to grow mushrooms above or below ground. A planter can be used to grow many crops above ground, if you like the look.
  • Any container in your inventory - Can be used to sow seeds. After seeds are put into the container activating the container will use a new seed for every sow action. The container can be put on the toolbelt and will show the number of seeds in the container on top of the icon.

Notes

  • No plowing is needed. Seeds can be sown directly on a dirt tile to begin.
  • * The maximum slope on which you can sow seeds is 8, where 8 = (highest north-south tile border's slope) + (highest east-west tile border's slope). For example, the slope can be level EW and 8-steep NS, or it can be 4-steep EW and 4-steep NS, etc. Attempting to sow seeds on a greater slope results in a message "The ground is not flat enough for crops to grow. You need to flatten it first". Farm tiles function the same with a slope 8, flat or anything in between. Still need more help, please see the chart below:

  • Moments of inspiration (rare rolls) do not produce rare crops while harvesting, however there is a 1 in 4 chance of discovering a Treasure map while harvesting or tending. It is also believed that a moment of inspiration during a harvest action may increase the chance at a higher yield during that single action.
  • The seeds and vegetables needed to start farming can be found while botanizing, foraging, or manually harvesting crops from a field. Harvested cotton, strawberries, pumpkin, wemp and reed plants must be picked to recover seeds for replanting.
  • Seeds can be sown on dirt tiles or in large planters.
  • The quality of the seed does not affect the growth time of the fields.
  • Clearing crops that have turned to weeds will return one seed.

Examining Crops

  • Anyone can verify if a field needs tending while holding an activated rake. Messages from this examination include:
    • "The crops grow steadily" - means the field is in order.
    • "It could use a touch from the rake or some other farming tool" - means it needs weeding and maintenance work performed by tending with an activated rake.
    • "Rotting old weeds" - means the field has gone unmaintained for too long and can no longer be harvested for useful produce.
  • Those with a farming skill below 15: can see the state of growth of a field, whether or not the field is tended or untended, and which type of crop is growing in a field (except when merely sprouts), on the field tile they are currently standing on.
  • At level 15 farming skill: players can mouse over a field and determine crop type, and whether or not the field is tended or untended, up to one tile away.
  • At level 20 farming skill: players can further determine the growth level of a field. The levels are, chronologically sorted:
  1. You see a patch of freshly sown field.
  2. A few green blades pop out of the ground.
  3. Small sprouts with many blades grow here.
  4. The sprouts are growing, a bit above half their mature height.
  5. The field is almost at full height.
  6. The field is at full height and ready to harvest!
  7. (rotten old weeds, crops completely ruined)
  • At level 30 farming skill: players can go on to determine if a tile needs tending/farming from up to two tiles away. Field ripeness can be checked from up to one tile away.
  • At level 60 farming skill: players can determine the number of items they will get after a harvest when they examine the field. It should be noted, however, that the number shown here is more of a minimum approximation (due to the other factors that also go into determining harvest counts).

Field Tending Success and Farming Skill Gained Therein

When tending a field, the player will receive one of five possible end results. Each provides a different message in the player event window, and each provides its own unique amount of skill-gain. The five possible field-tending results are as follows:

  • The field is tended - Failure
  • The field is now tended - Weak success, most times a farming skill gain
  • The field looks better after your tending - Mediocre success, sometimes a farming skill gain
  • The field is now groomed - Good success, no farming skill gain
  • The field is now nicely groomed - Excellent success, no farming skill gain

Farming Warning Messages

  • The ground is too moist here, so the <item> would rot.
Occurs when trying to plant crops on a tile that is 1 or more dirts below the water table.
Also could present itself with the message The water is too deep. You cannot sow that <item> there.
  • This type of crop can only grow in water of suitable depth
Occurs when trying to sow reed or rice that is not a suitable depth. Reed and Rice can be planted in a depth between 1 dirts and 4 dirts below the water table.
Can also present itself in the form of the message This type of crop can only grow in water of suitable depth.
  • The water is too deep to plant the <item>.
Occurs when trying to plant a crop on a tile in which the northwest corner of that tile is more than 0 dirts below the water table.
