Getting ready:
- It's advisable to begin with a minimum skill of 20 in Woodcutting. (More is always better...)
- The wood type of the last wooden item attached to a ship will determine the wood type of the finished ship. For example, attaching a cedar peg as the last wooden item will make the ship a cedar ship. For this reason your primary wood type for your ship should be whatever tree is most convenient or abundantly found as you can choose the ship's wood type at the end.
- Currently cedar decays slower than any other wood type in game, therefore it is best to ensure that the finished boat/ship is made of cedar. (This has been confirmed with all wood types including Oak.)
Note: As with all improving actions, you can improve up to a range slightly higher than your current skill of the action you are performing. For example: If you have a Ship Building skill of 3 you can improve seats up to a quality of 13).
Ship Building:
- 1-12 Ship Building: (Estimated time: 2-5hrs)
- Make 5-10 Seats and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
- 12-16 Ship Building: (Estimated time: 2-3hrs)
- Make 5-10 Oars and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
- 16-20 Ship Building: (Estimated time: 2-5hrs)
- Make 5-10 Keel sections and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
- 20-30 Ship Building:
- Make 2-5 Rowing Boats and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
- 30-40 Ship Building:
- Make 2-5 Small Sailing Boats and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
- 40-50 Ship Building:
- Make 2-5 Corbitas and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
- 50-60 Ship Building:
- Make 2-5 Cogs and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
- 60-70 Ship Building:
- Make 2-5 Knarrs and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
- 70-80+ Ship Building:
- Make 2-5 Caravels and improve them with logs of slightly higher quality.
Eep, Noooo!
- I've found it far faster and easier to grind Shipbuilding with Oars. Do seats to 10, then make 10 oars. Imp those 10x oars to 15 QL, do them one by one, not in batches. You'll hit 15 skill. Imp them to 20, and you'll be around 20 skill.
Keep this up as long as you can stand it. If your skill begins falling behind, add more oars into the rotation. Doing it this way, you hit the sweet spot of gaining skill, by constantly having oars QL around your skill level. You can also reduce the QLs of the oars by throwing them into a BSB to equalize and lower them all and stay in the sweet spot for a far longer period of time.
