My Recounts from Chaos
As a player who has had a few hiatuses from Chaos, everytime I return I always find it fascinating how methods/fighting styles/tactics have changed and evolved over time. I think it is important to document these as well as major events so that newer players can look back and understand the history of the game and how it's evolved with the ingenuity of players and introduction of new features and changes to the mechanics.
June 3rd, 2013 - The first time I experienced the Orb of Doom
On this day, the Empire of Mol Rehan under the leadership of Nadroj organised for a tower bash outside of the JK deed of The Hot Gate. This was one part of a major EMR offensive in the east intended to push JK out of the Sparta peninsula and back into their homeland.
Sparta was an old deed on Chaos (built on old mechanics which were no longer possible and became its downfall - I'll explain further later on). It was renowned by EMR for its Russian occupants, in particular a player named fsbkun whom many EMR members viewed as being a particularly strong player with high archery and fletching skill and Shield of the Gone (SOTG wasn't as common at the time as it is today). The buffer zone between Sparta and Kratos (The stronghold housing the EMR fighting force in the east) was the JKC deed of The Hot Gate, essentially a wall deed west/east blocking EMR from advancing further north by land.
June 3rd, 2013 - Timeline of events:
- A contingent of approximately 15 EMR struck at The Hot Gate with the main goal of bashing a tower directly in front and to provoke a JKC counterattack.
- JKC mustered an almost equally strong force to rival EMR soon after.
- Kix activated the Orb of Doom timer and charged into the EMR group, only a few EMR players had noticed the Orb of Doom in Events tab.
- "KIX HAS THE ORB OF DOOM!!!" Demondan shouted. Seconds later, 1/3 of the EMR group was hit with the Orb of Doom including myself. I was climbing up a hill at the time I was hit. I went from 80% health down to 1% and fell off... fortunately into a mine at the base of the hill. Had the base of the hill not had an open mine, I would've died.
- After the Orb of Doom struck, JKC charged and a skirmish ensued almost leading to the death of Nadroj whose computer had frozen 1 tile off deed. He was wielding the Sword of Magranon.
- The tower was bashed in the end and both sides disengaged. Months later, The Hot Gate would eventually fall and JK forces withdrew their defense back to Sparta.
March 23rd, 2014 - The fall of Sparta
As mentioned above in the June 3rd 2013 recount, Sparta was a very old JK deed on Chaos. Although the deed was well defended and housed a relatively large, skilled and active russian playerbase, the outer dirt walls and their longhouses were built on a slope, spiraling around the deed. Many years ago, building houses on slopes was possible however with the introduction of multi-level building, this feature was removed and the developers chose to phase out sloped buildings by making them irreparable.
For whatever reason, Sparta did not replace their slope buildings with a flat longhouses on a level dirtwall. I strongly believe the decision to retain their sloped longhouses lead to their downfall as it took away their ability to repair the longhouses and repel the EMR raid on March 23rd 2014.
On this day, a few months after JKC pulled back from The Hot Gate, they heavily fortified the south side of Sparta. To circumvent this, EMR loaded up 4 full knarrs of raiders, sailed around Sparta and attacked it from the north. In most circumstanced, this would've been a risky endeavour as it meant the attacking force would be stranded with sea as their only means of escape but this risk was mitigated by the overwhelming manpower of the EMR raid force which was in excess of 40 players initially and later joined by more who arrived by land or in sailboats.
JKC responded to the attack by teleporting players into Sparta, fighting back from their safe mine (The reinforced mine popped by Rolf sparking controversy - I'll explain later).
Blinksyrevived accidentally fell off a slope and was killed by JK - He was carrying the Sword of Magranon.
At some point while EMR was digging down the dirt wall, a sizable group of JKC fighters on horseback suddenly appeared from the North.
"THEY'RE NORTH OF US!!", somebody shouted into Mumble (The voicechat program we used).
Almost immediately, every single EMR at Sparta logged in and scuttled out of their tunnel/mine or building and faced north.
I saw the JKC group ride within 30 tiles of Sparta before turning around and fleeing in terror after realising the EMR group outnumbered them about 3-4 times. The JKC group was volleyed by EMR as they tried to escape with chased down and killed in a mine leading to a coastal JK deed called Rats Point. After this last fight, all remaining JKC had teleported back to the north and there was no more JKC resistance at Sparta.
March 24th, 2014 - The Sparta Safe-Mine Incident
- [10:03:47] You enter Want Win Beg Rolf.
It obviously wasn't common knowledge at the time but you can removed reinforced cave walls with the Disintegrate spell. Prior to this discovery, most deeds on Chaos would have a vault/safe-mine near their token. In the event the deed was breached, valuables which could not be safely evacuated would be deposited into the vault. The entrance tunnel would then be collapsed and reinforced, sealing the valuables inside.
During the Sparta raid, JKC moved a lot of valuables into the safe mine at Sparta, collapsed and reinforced the entrance. When EMR reached the safe mine, they attempted to disintegrate the tile. The chances of success at the time were extremely small, if I recall correctly it was calculated to be something around 1% success rate.
When EMR succeeded in disintegrating the tile, it gave the event message that the cast was successful but the tile remained reinforced. Rolf was immediately contacted by several members of the EMR leadership and within 30 minutes, he appeared in local at Sparta.
After a few minutes, Rolf determined that the ability to create a fully-sealed vault was unintended, that the successful disintegrate spell not removing reinforcement was a bug and he promptly popped the tile allowing EMR access into the Sparta safe mine.
Rolf's involvement drew widespread condemnation from the Wurm community as he had traditionally maintained zero-involvement in these types of affairs, particularly those surrounding Chaos and PVP.
In my opinion, perhaps the greatest insult to injury was the level of compensation Rolf offered to the Sparta residents. A wagon with a minimal quantity of glimmersteel and adamantite moonmetal with the rare condition. Minimal as in not even enough to make a weapon out of it. While I don't question the act of giving compensation, I think the value of it showed how out of touch Rolf was with the game.
