Manachan

manachan3.jpg Manachan entered through the portal to Cadence on the day of Sleep in the third week of the starfall of Diamonds, 1101.

Pronounced mah-NAH-ken, the name is ancient Celtic for monk. (My friends call me Manny)

"I well remember the long cold nights huddled in fear over my tiny campfire. Desperately hoping to create a nail, the sounds of strange and unknown creatures were all around me."
Manachan

Manachan devoted himself to the study of the world of Wurm. Every day rites of passage opened new doors to a world richer that he could imagine. Death found him often yet he returned time and time again to a northern hill covered in Walnut trees and rose bushes where he would found his first Deed, appropriately named Walnut Coffin. He slowly learned many ancient and valuable skills. How to find food and water, build a fence and run away from things larger than himself desirous of eating him. Eventually the mysterious occult art of tile flattening was discovered and construction began. Mining, farming, tool making, cart & ship building, stonework and cooking were all begun in earnest. Self defence was practiced daily.

He also met other Wurmians for the first time! Ancient and wise, kind and generous were the Wurmians who happened by, but infrequent were the visits. Eventually Manachan explored his surroundings far and wide to discover neighbors, also ancient and wise.

So, want to join our alliance?
A neighbor

Manachan discovered that three of his neighbors less than a days ride distant were all members of a grand alliance that spanned the entire land. Desirous of obtaining permission to plan and construct a new highway towards their general direction contact was made. Friendly relations ensued and not only permission obtained, but membership in the Northern Lakes Alliance, the finest group of Wurmians I have had the great fortune to meet.

Time at Walnut Coffin was good! Highways, mines, bridges, canals, herds and stables, boat tunnels, docks, and a 12 room luxury hotel all became reality under Manachans insatiable desire to learn, build and grind. The new highways brought visitors and new settlers to the quiet and isolated area of Walnut Coffin. Sadly, not all of them were ancient and wise, nor were they kind and generous. With a broken heart Manachan left his beloved home where he had grown up, and turned his face west to the horizon and new challenges.

With a new location chosen, Manachan (and his recently created life long alt-friend Druidia) set to work on their new home. Not many would look out over a field of submarine sand dunes and declare them to be the perfect spot for a settlement, but they had a vision, not of what it was, but what it could be. They vowed to shape this place to their needs and make it their permanent home. Point of No Return was founded. Defenses were constructed, farms and grazing land planted, channels dredged, bridges built, underground harbors mined, and a great transformation of sand to grass covered plains completed the task of making the location livable. Not only livable, but quite pleasant!

Soon after followed the construction of the Port of No Return providing on-deed mooring for 20 deep draft vessels, 30 smaller vessels and a sandy beach.

Two became five with the arrival of 3 newly created life long alt-friends, Librarian, Magisterium, and Forecaster. Deeply devoted to their respective deities, the Point of No Return quickly became a place of dedicated worship, religious study and monasticism.

I think the Monastery had always been there. The stones and mortar just made it visible.

The Monastery of No Return was completed in the starfall of Diamonds, 1111. The adjoining combat and sparring arena soon thereafter. It currently serves as a facility for sermon circles and other religious training as well as providing many workshops, a kitchen, sleeping quarters, 5m, 10m and 20m archery ranges and other recreational facilities.

Manachan, Druidia and the gang still reside in the Point of No Return workshop a few tiles away from the Monastery up a short forest path past the cemetery where honored dead lay interred, and continue to maintain and improve the facility every day.
