I did a quick test, cutting 4 very old cherry trees down with a small axe and a hatchet of the same QL (20,15 and 20,43) with 20,01 woodcutting skill. Result is that most fell with 2 hits, odd one with three. Axe required a total of 9 hits, hatchet 10. Skill gain difference was to marginal to draw conclusions (favoured the small axe).
