Part 1: Gear up!
First off: Stick around the starting settlement. Use the spirit guards for protection, and the bartenders for food. Also, there is often clay, iron and water nearby.
Starter kit
Some of the gear you start with will just weigh you down in the first half hour. Open a bank account at the token and deposit the following:
10kg of wood
- Find a log at least 4.0 kg in weight, and create the following:
- mallet
- (optional) spindle
- (optional) clay shaper
- (optional) spatula
- Also, collect about 6kg of wood scrap or logs. (use this as fuel for a fire in the next step)
Clay Jars
- Find out where the nearest clay is, and dig clay until your digging skill gets to 5 or 10, this will also improve your body strength.
- press F2 and check out what your Body Strength is. The maximum weight in kg you can carry is equal to 2 times your Body Strength, before taking a 25% walking speed penalty. (3.5 x Body Strength) results in a 75% speed penalty.
- create 2 jars, and use the woodscrap to make a fire and cook the jars.
Get some fuel
(you should now be able to carry more weight now)
- pick up as much tar, peat or woodscrap as you can without a speed penalty. (dont forget kindling if you are using tar or peat)
- head to the nearest mine in search for Iron
Get some iron
- Mine rock shards from a cave wall until your mining skill is 5 or 10. This will also improve your body strength.
- Mine an iron vein 5, or 15 times. (15 if you cannot find a public large anvil).
- create a campfire, if no forge exists, and make the following:
- small anvil
- 2 or 4 large nails (2 for a mine door; 4 for a 1-tile house)
- 1 door lock (for a mine door)
- 7 or 9 small nails (for a bucket, small cart and maybe some wooden fences later on)
Check the trader
trade foraged items, pottery and spindles for the following (if possible):
- pelt
- teeth and glands (low weight highly effective healing covers)
- cotton or cotton string (fishing rod)
- seeds (to start a farm)
Part 2: Embark on your adventure
It's time to hit the open road! Eat at the bartenders for the last time. Use your jars to fill up your small barrel with about 10kg water. Pick a compass heading and hit the open road.
First Kill
Now that your Body Strength is 20 you should be able to defend yourself in a fight (to some extent). Make sure your short sword is in your right hand. And turn off Autofight, so that you can see if you are too far, or too close to your target. Most animals are still stronger than you. However you should be able to kill the following:
- wild cats
- dogs
- "young" cave bugs
Once you have a fight skill of 5 or 10 you can try Older Cave Bugs, Mountain Lions and Black Wolves. If you are having trouble, retreat into the nearest lake, most animals in Wurm cant swim. Also, if you need to you can train your skills, by chopping down trees with your sword. This will damage your sword, but you will fighting experience.
Settle Down
Find a place to settle. All you really need is Iron and Water to get started. Nearby Clay can be used for creating a forge. Tar is great for filling Lanterns. And nearby Peat is good for fueling fires. But Iron and Water are the most critical. Prospect for iron and start tunneling, leaving space to expand your cave. Use your door lock and large nails to create a mine door, and presto! Home Sweet Home.
