Lava tiles comes from lava eruptions, which are extremely rare events, and happen only on rock tiles. Lava flows downhill, and you can change it's path by terraforming in front of it.

• Lava is the most dangerous tile in Wurm. It has the potential to kill in seconds if you stand on it, stay away or expect damage!
• Animals will avoid walking over lava, however they can be led onto a lava tile but will not receive any damage. You can use this to your advantage if you are being chased by an aggressive one.
• Lava fiends and lava spiders spawn on lava tiles.
• Lava dries up over time and changes back into rock. It will raise the rock by a tiny amount when it dries up.
