As of April 2012: 0.5 kg of lye is used for each attempt to create a leather. Each leather is 3kg. Under good conditions a 12kg hide can yield 4 leathers at the cost of 0.2 kg lye.
A hide skinned from an animal.
Animal hide can be butchered from some animals: bull, calf, cow, crocodile, deer, foal, horse, or unicorn. Animal hide is used to create leather with lye.
Dragons give special drake hide when butchered.
Hints
Hides are heavy, and their weight can slow you down while hunting. You can overcome this by creating leather out of them on the spot by bringing lye with you. Leather is much lower weight than hides.
