You can raise your fighting skill to a maximum of 20 using a doll. To gain more skill points after that you must fight in real combat.
You can also practice with a bow equipped, this will train archery, fighting, and the type of bow at the same time. But much slower for archery than a target, and damages the doll more faster than a shaft.
If you keep the quality of the doll as high as possible, you won't damage it as much per hit.
