There are three major downsides. Averaging the quality of the items put in is not always a good thing, such as when high quality materials are required for improving. In addition, 5% of the stored items are lost every 30 days. Finally, any enchants, renames, rare item status, and other "special" characteristics on items put in are lost.
Ownership
The ownership rules for BSB's are somewhat complex. Much of the information below is from observation, and needs further testing and confirmation.
*If a BSB is dropped (not planted) it's not owned by anyone. When emptied, anyone can pick it up.
*If a BSB is planted (not dropped) then the person who planted it is the owner. Only they can move or pick it up.
*If anyone puts an item into an empty planted BSB, they now become the owner. (Suspected Bug ?)
*A locked BSB prevents anyone from using the BSB
Notes
* The last plank built onto the bin determines the type (cedar, pinewood, etc.).
* Finished bulk storage bins can only be picked up if they are empty, but can always be pushed, pulled, and turned like forges and ovens(but only by the owner if planted)
* They can be planted to prevent pickup when they are empty.
* Can be secured like a large chest with a large padlock.
