The Village of Small Bears is a size 10 Jenn-Kellon village Village with pretensions to grandeur. At the time of writing it is a new settlement with few citizens. It is to be found on the Home Server due east of Newtown, over the hill and down to the lake. It is part of a larger community of Villages, Homesteads, and non-deeded farms and cottages gathered round the western end of the lake, that are loosely referred to as The Bears of Wurm.

Note: We are currently looking for people interested in becoming Citizens. We are looking for Premium players who want to have a more relaxed experience - possibly older, couples, families even. See the recruitment section further down the page.

About the village

The village sits on the shore of a beautiful lake and is bordered to its west by woodland, to its east and north by the lake, and to the south by the main highway to Newtown. Three sides of the village, western, southern and eastern, are protected by tall stone walls; the Northern side of the village is open to the lake.

The village has been built on the faint remnants of previous occupation, but to accommodate the new larger settlement land has been reclaimed from the lake and a small hillock has been brought down to lake level with one tier. This reclamation has included the construction of a small harbour and a fishing pier that reaches out beyond the village boundary into deeper water.

Buildings

The village it self is only half constructed. Two residences have been completed in the south-western corner of the village and are home to the Mayor and Becky. In addition, there is a village store, a workshop next to the forge, a small shed and Fore Paws Village Shop. This shop is located by the front gate and is home to a Public Trader. The shop is accessible to travellers and local residents without the need to enter the village front gate, though during transactions they are safe within the village boundary and are subject to the protection of the Spirit Guards.

Resources

The village has a large internal farm area growing Pumpkins, Potatos, Cereals, Corn, Wemp and Cotton - all with good success. We also have a smaller area under the nominal charge of Becky with 4 crop tiles, 1 Hen and three eggs. This will hopefully be our small hen coop!

We have access to a large mine with 5 iron veins. This mine has also broken through into older working which gave us some cave bug issues - gallantly eradicated by Syrinx and Terasar.

Fishing is good and we have plentiful Cherry, Lemon and Olive trees in the area.

Access

Front Gate

The front gate to the village is situated one third along the southern wall, on the main highway heading east. The gate is indented into the wall two tiles so that visitors have access to the Kingdom Trader. There is no automatic entrance to the village through this gate as it is nominally for the use of Citizens only. Visitors are recommended to use the East Gate or arrive at the harbour by water.

East Gate

The East Gate is situated in the eastern wall near the lake and is the main public access. Follow the main highway heading east along the wall and turn left towards the lake at the south-eastern corner. Follow the path down to the lake. Visitors are welcome to this gate which is kept unlocked at all times. Here one has access to the harbour and the good fishing available from the pier and the harbour wall. This also give access to the village token which is just by the village farm.

Forest Gate

The Forest or West Gate is located in the western wall at the extreme north-western corner. This gate gives access to the forest and will be the access for future off-deed farming. This gate is for citizens only and is kept locked.

Harbour

Visitors are welcome to arrive at the village from the lake and land at the small harbour. Like the East Gate, this access is open at all times.

Safety Zone

We have built into our walls safety zones by indenting two of the gates, the Front Gate and the East Gate, by one tile. However, we have also added a more effective safety zone into the south western corner of our walls. This zone, also known as the killing zone, is not only overlooked by the Tower, but is also protected by the village Spirit Guards. As it is a corner, it is possible to run across the corner of our boundary and lure gullible crocodiles and spiders into the trap.

We are adding a donation barrel for travellers who make use of our guards in this way. Please donate however much you like from the bounty gained from butchering the now dead beast. We think this is a fair trade for the traveller facilitating themselves of our overpaid guards.

Please bury any resulting corpses - especially your own!

Fishing

The village boasts two prime fishing points, both accessible to the public as well as citizens.

The pier stretches out 4 tiles beyond the village boundary into relatively deep water. However, fishing from this point does not require very high skills. As it is beyond the village boundary, visitors can safely drop anything they wish without worries of not being able to pick them up again. However, we would ask that no structure is put up on the pier as this needs to be kept for all to use.

The main harbour wall, just by the east wall, is another prime location for fishing. Again, a small strip of tiles is outside the village boundary.

One note: the lake is home to several bears who like to quietly float up to our lake side border and amuse themselves by eating fishermen. Do keep an eye out for these cheerful creatures and avoid fishing in thick fog.

Notes for Visitors

The Village of Small Bears is a very relaxed company of people, as it the community of which it is part, The village motto, though cliched, says much of the attitude of the Mayor in general: Peace, man, peace.

However, we have a couple of guidelines for visitors and potential settlers alike:

  • No Stealing
  • Please take any rubbish with you
  • No fighting
  • Please be a little careful of some subject matters and language - we are a mixed community of young and old
  • Come and say hello - don't just use the trader when it is obvious people are around and about and say nothing.
  • If you have accidentally spawned in the middle of the village, refrain from attacking it just because you are too idiotic to realise that Wurm does not stand still and wait for you for months on end. Look surprised, be cheerful, and move on.
  • Have fun. We are not some overwhelming organisation, nor are we tied in knots by long lists of crazy rules; the mayor is quite simply too old for all that. We always remember that this is just a game.

Future Plans

Most villages on Wurm seem to be size 10, and the Village of Small Bears has no immediate ambitions to grow enormous. However, there is no shortage of ideas. There are two projects being considered at present:

Off Deed Farming

As the village grows, the current fields will be insufficient to supply everyone's needs, especially those trying to increase their cooking skill. The land to the south is being used by other non-deeded residents and we have the lake to the north and east. To the west is the hill which is far too steep to farm. The plan, therefore it to partially lower the land to the west, creating one or two tiers, and reclaim more land from the lake. This will be a primary project for any new residents as the need for food is always paramount.

A Small Venice

The more adventurous plan is to extend the village itself further into the lake, creating a small [Venice] or [Annecy] like village. This can be done without having to increase the size of the deed, but if successful, and if there are enough contributing citizens, then a deed extension should be considered. This plan would have particular relevance should we be able to take advantage of proper bridges and boats.

Boats

A future plan for Wurm is to allow the construction of boats to make use of the considerable water area. The manufacture of boats and training people in their use is seen as a possible source of revenue for the village as well as a lot of fun.

How to find us

The village is only a few minutes away from Newtown and is simple to locate. Head east from Newtown over the half completed land bridge across the lake. Turn left on the eastern shore and follow the path up the side of the hill. Continue on the path over the hill and down the other side. At the junction, as the main highway turns left towards Serene Bear Landing, continue straight on down the hill following the smaller path; the path widens again after a few hundred meters. The Village of Small Bears will come into your sight on the left hand side of the road behind the long tall stone walls.

Recruiting Citizens

We are now in the position to consider applications from those who would like to take up residence in the Village Of Small Bears and be involved with the running of the village and its future plans. As mentioned earlier in this text we are a mixed community of all ages, and we would welcome applications from those who feel they would fit in well with a relaxed, friendly and uncontroversial society. The village would probably suit older players or couples - even families. If you were a fan of the Prisoner, and wished you had gone to Woodstock, you will fit right in! But if you are younger and wished you were old enough to remember Woodstock, you are still welcome.

Here are a few guide requirements, but they are by no means fixed in stone:

  • Membership type: Premium members only (see dependants below)
  • Skill Levels: Not looking for champions, but basic 20 in essentials like mining, carpentry, masonry and digging would be nice (but not mandatory) and willing to grow fast. If you are not there yet, don't worry, you soon will be!
  • Specific Trades: All trades welcome at this early point.
  • Money: Occasional donations to the village fund would be nice, but no fixed requirement
  • Male or Female: Either, thought the area is a little short on female Wurmites.
  • Dependants: With limits (we can only have 40 citizens), we would welcome dependants of the primary citizen, Although the primary Citizen must be a premium member and preferably an adult, the dependant(s) need not be. However, the primary citizen will be directly responsible for the dependants, their behaviour and sustenance. (Only primary citizens will have access to central food stores.)

If you are interested in applying for citizenship, please come and talk to Gurubear, or PM him in game, or better still, visit the Bears of Wurm web site and use the contact form.
