Samling was the starter town of the Independence land of the Freedom Isles, located at the north coast. The deed was held by the game moderator Levedara. If your avatar happened to die in the game, you had the option to respawn here.
(The "Outside Samling" respawn point was notorious spawning you in the water near Samling and make you drown.)
Samling was rather small, compared to other and former starter towns. It did not have a merchant row like Newtown for example; player-driven towns are featuring trading places instead.
Samling had a token to access your bank account, and a bartender that gives new players free food in their first 24 hours of total playtime.
