Note that there are 2 versions of the pickaxe: the wooden 'newbie' pickaxe which you cannot improve but does not drop upon death, and the normal iron version which can be improved .
On failure, the [[shaft]] is destroyed and the [[pickaxe head]] is turned to scrap.
